Abstract

Systems and methods are provided herein for generating summaries of unconsumed portions of an ordered series of media assets, customized for multiple users. A media guidance application may determine that a given media asset of an ordered series is to be collectively consumed by a first user and a second user. A first portion of an ordered series, that both the first user and the second user have not yet consumed, is identified together with a second portion of the ordered series that the first user has consumed but the second user has not yet consumed. A custom summary including a detailed summary of the first portion (e.g., a two minute summary) and less detailed summary of the second portion (e.g., a one minute summary) is generated.

Claims (34)

1. A method for generating a customized summary for media assets in a series, the method comprising:

retrieving, by control circuitry, a fast-forwarding amount that relates to the fast-forwarding of at least a portion of the series in association with a user profile;

determining a level of interest based on the fast-forwarding amount; and

generating the customized summary for consumed and unconsumed media assets in the series, wherein the level of detail of the customized summary for an unconsumed media asset is different than a consumed media asset and is correlated to the determined level of interest and inclusion of an unconsumed media asset, from the unconsumed media assets, is included in the customized summary only if a priority value associated with the unconsumed media asset exceeds a minimum threshold priority value.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the customized summary for the series includes a different level of customization for one episode as compared to another episode of the series, wherein the different level of customization correlates to the level of interest based on the fast-forwarding amount of the episode.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one episode has a higher level of interest than the another episode in the series.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein a higher level of detail is included in the customized summary for the episode having a higher level of interest than the episode having a lower level of interest.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a look-up table maps the fast-forwarding amount to a level of interest value.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the level of interest includes associating a lower-level interest with a higher fast-forwarding amount and a higher-level interest with a lower fast-forwarding amount.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a higher level of interest results in a more detailed customized summary than a lower level of interest.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the more detailed customized summary is a summary of two-minutes or longer, while a lesser detailed customized summary is a summary of less than two minutes.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the customized summary is generated if the level of interest is above a minimum threshold value.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the minimum threshold value is determined by an adjustable configuration setting or automatically selected by the control circuitry.

11. A system for generating a customized summary for media assets in a series, the system comprising:

communications circuitry; and

control circuitry communicably coupled to the communications circuitry and configured to:

retrieve, via the communications circuitry, a fast-forwarding amount that relates to the fast-forwarding of at least a portion of the series in association with a user profile;

determine a level of interest based on the fast-forwarding amount; and

generate the customized summary for consumed and unconsumed media assets in the series, wherein the level of detail of the customized summary for an unconsumed media asset is different than a consumed media asset and is correlated to the determined level of interest, and inclusion of an unconsumed media asset, from the unconsumed media assets, is included in the customized summary only if a priority value associated with the unconsumed media asset exceeds a minimum threshold priority value.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the customized summary for the series includes a different level of customization for one episode as compared to another episode of the series, wherein the different level of customization correlates to the level of interest based on the fast-forwarding amount of the episode.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one episode has a higher level of interest than the another episode in the series.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein a higher level of detail is included in the customized summary for the episode having a higher level of interest than the episode having a lower level of interest.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein a look-up table maps the fast-forwarding amount to a level of interest value.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining a level of interest includes associating a lower-level interest with a higher fast-forwarding amount and a higher-level interest with a lower fast-forwarding amount.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein a higher level of interest results in a more detailed customized summary than a lower level of interest.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the more detailed customized summary is a summary of two-minutes or longer, while a lesser detailed customized summary is a summary of less than two minutes.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that a segment in the series has not been consumed; and

in response to the determining that the segment in the series has not been consumed:

determining a characteristic in the not consumed segment; and

updating the generated customized summary for the media assets in the series by removing a portion of the customized summary associated with the determined characteristic.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining interest in a characteristic based on the user profile; and

removing a second unconsumed media asset, from the unconsumed media assets, if the second unconsumed media asset does not include the interested characteristic.
