Abstract

A surgical instrument assembly comprises a guide tube and a first instrument. The first instrument includes a first elongated shaft and a first proximal arm link coupled by a first shoulder joint, the first proximal arm link and a first distal arm link coupled by a first elbow joint, and the first distal arm link and a first end effector coupled by a first wrist joint. The surgical instrument assembly also comprises a second instrument that includes a second elongated shaft and a second proximal arm link coupled by a second shoulder joint, the second proximal arm link and a second distal arm link coupled by a second elbow joint, and the second distal arm link and a second end effector coupled by a second wrist joint. The surgical instrument assembly also includes an imaging assembly. The first and second end effectors are within the imaging assembly's field of view.

Claims (25)

1. A surgical instrument assembly comprising:

a guide tube;

a first instrument extendable distally of the guide tube and configured to extend out of an exit port of the guide tube, the first instrument including a first elongated shaft and a first distal linkage assembly, the first distal linkage assembly including:

a first proximal arm link;

a first distal arm link; and

a first end effector,

wherein the first elongated shaft and the first proximal arm link are coupled by a first shoulder joint, the first proximal arm link and the first distal arm link are coupled by a first elbow joint, and the first distal arm link and the first end effector are coupled by a first wrist joint;

a second instrument extendable distally of the guide tube and configured to extend out of the exit port of the guide tube, the second instrument including a second elongated shaft and a second distal linkage assembly, the second distal linkage assembly including:

a second proximal arm link;

a second distal arm link; and

a second end effector,

wherein the second elongated shaft and the second proximal arm link are coupled by a second shoulder joint, the second proximal arm link and the second distal arm link are coupled by a second elbow joint, and the second distal arm link and the second end effector are coupled by a second wrist joint; and

an imaging assembly including an elongated shaft and a distal portion, wherein the elongated shaft of the imaging assembly is coupled to the distal portion of the imaging assembly by a joint, wherein at least the first and second elbow joints, the first and second wrist joints, and the first and second end effectors are within a field of view of the imaging assembly, and wherein when at least the first and second elbow joints, the first and second wrist joints, and the first and second end effectors are within the field of view of the imaging assembly, the imaging assembly is positioned distally of the exit port of the guide tube,

wherein the first distal linkage assembly of the first instrument and the second distal linkage assembly of the second instrument each include a greater number of joints than the imaging assembly.

2. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 wherein the first elongated shaft is translatable relative to the guide tube to translate a position of the first shoulder joint.

3. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 wherein motion of the first shoulder joint is controllable independently of the first elbow joint and the first wrist joint.

4. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 wherein motion of the first elbow joint is controllable independently of the first shoulder joint and the first wrist joint.

5. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 wherein motion of the first wrist joint is controllable independently of the first shoulder joint and the first elbow joint.

6. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 wherein motion of the first shoulder joint is controllable independently of the second shoulder joint.

7. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 wherein the imaging assembly includes an image capture element including stereoscopic image capture elements.

8. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 wherein the stereoscopic image capture elements are pivotable about the joint of the imaging assembly.

9. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 wherein the guide tube, the first elongated shaft, and the second elongated shaft extend along parallel axes.

10. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 , wherein the imaging assembly includes:

an image capture element; and

a pair of illumination elements, wherein each illumination element of the pair of illumination elements is positioned on an opposing side of the image capture element from the other illumination element.
