Abstract

Systems and processes disclosed herein perform an automatic remediation process. The automatic remediation process may be a log-based remediation process. Systems disclosed herein may obtain log files from an information management system and determine the occurrence of errors at the information management system based on error codes included in the logs. Further, the systems may access a knowledgebase to determine whether solutions for the errors have been previously generated. The solutions may include patches or hotfixes that can be applied to the information management system without removing user-access or stopping execution of the information management system. The systems may automatically update the information management system to address the errors. Alternatively, or in addition, the systems may alert a user, such as an administrator, of the existence of a solution to the error, and whether the solution may be applied without interrupting service or access to the information management system.

Claims (37)

1. A system comprising:

one or more hardware processors configured with computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more hardware processors, configure the system to:

receive a log file generated by an information management system that currently operates with a first version of management software that controls operation of the information management system, wherein the information management system is one of: part of the system, and distinct from the system;

extract error codes from the log file;

determine one or more metric values for each of the error codes;

based on the one or more metric values, select at least one error code from among the error codes;

determine that the information management system currently operates with the first version of management software;

based at least in part on the selected at least one error code and further based on the first version of the management software, identify a remedial action for the information management system; and

cause the remedial action to be performed at the information management system without user intervention, wherein the remedial action comprises installing a second version of the management software at the information management system, and further comprises causing the information management system to operate with the second version of the management software and not with the first version of the management software,

wherein the second version is different from the first version, and wherein the second version is associated with correcting one or more causes of the selected at least one error code.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the log file is received from a storage manager of the information management system, wherein the storage manager is implemented in a computing system of the information management system.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein determining the one or more metric values comprises determining a frequency of occurrence of each of the error codes.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein selecting the at least one error code from among the error codes is based on prioritizing the error codes.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein prioritizing the error codes is based at least in part on an impact upon the information management system of a respective error corresponding to each of the error codes as measured by a respective metric value.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein prioritizing the error codes is based at least in part on one or more of: a frequency of occurrence of each error code among the error codes, and a number of computing systems affected by an error corresponding to each of the error codes.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first version of the management software of the information management system is determined from the log file.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second version of the management software comprises one or more of: a patch of the first version, a hotfix of the first version, and an update of the first version.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein identifying the remedial action comprises accessing a data structure that associates error codes with versions of the management software.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remedial action additionally comprises one or more of: performing a load balancing process at the information management system, changing a storage policy at the information management system, changing a backup schedule at the information management system, changing a deduplication configuration at the information management system, changing a backup configuration at the information management system, and changing a capacity of the information management system.

11. A computer-implemented method performed by a first system, wherein the first system comprises one or more hardware processors configured with computer-executable instructions for performing the method, comprising:

receiving a log file generated by an information management system, wherein the information management system is one of: part of the first system, and distinct from the first system;

extracting error codes from the log file;

determining one or more metric values for each of the error codes;

based on the one or more metric values, selecting a first error code from among the error codes;

identifying a first version of management software currently executing at the information management system, wherein the management software controls operation of the information management system;

identifying a remedial action that is based at least in part on the first error code and is further based on the first version of the management software; and

causing the remedial action to be performed at the information management system without user intervention, wherein the remedial action comprises installing a second version of the management software at the information management system, and further comprises causing the information management system to operate with the second version of the management software and not the first version of the management software,

wherein the second version is different from the first version, and wherein the second version is associated with correcting one or more causes of the first error code.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the log file is received from a storage manager of the information management system, wherein the storage manager is implemented in a computing system of the information management system.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein determining the one or more metric values comprises determining a frequency of occurrence of each of the error codes.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein selecting the first error code from among the error codes is based on prioritizing the error codes.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein prioritizing the error codes is based at least in part on an impact upon the information management system of a respective error corresponding to each of the error codes as measured by a respective metric value.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein prioritizing the error codes is based at least in part on one or more of: a frequency of occurrence of each error code among the error codes, and a number of computing systems affected by an error corresponding to each of the error codes.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the first version of the management software of the information management system is determined from the log file.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the second version of the management software comprises one or more of: a patch of the first version, a hotfix of the first version, and an update of the first version.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein identifying the remedial action comprises accessing a data structure that associates error codes with versions of the management software.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the remedial action additionally comprises one or more of: performing a load balancing process at the information management system, changing a storage policy at the information management system, changing a backup schedule at the information management system, changing a deduplication configuration at the information management system, changing a backup configuration at the information management system, and changing a capacity of the information management system.
