Abstract

A display device includes: a display area having a plurality of sub-pixels; a plurality of pad electrodes in a peripheral area outside the display area; a first organic insulating layer comprising an opening overlapping the plurality of pad electrodes; and an integrated circuit overlapping the plurality of pad electrodes and electrically connected to the plurality of pad electrodes, wherein a distance between an edge of the first organic insulating layer defining the opening and an edge of the integrated circuit is 40 micrometers (μm) or more.

Claims (53)

1. A display device comprising:

a display area in which a plurality of sub-pixels are arranged;

a plurality of pad electrodes in a peripheral area outside the display area;

a first organic insulating layer having an opening that overlaps the plurality of pad electrodes;

an integrated circuit overlapping the plurality of pad electrodes and electrically connected to the plurality of pad electrodes, wherein an edge of the first organic insulating layer defining the opening is spaced apart from an edge of the integrated circuit by a first distance;

a second organic insulating layer on an upper surface of the first organic insulating layer, wherein the second organic insulating layer overlaps a lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer including the edge of the first organic insulating layer and extends onto a lower insulation layer under the first organic insulating layer beyond the edge of the first organic insulating layer;

a plurality of data lines passing through the display area; and

a plurality of connection lines electrically connecting the plurality of data lines to the plurality of pad electrodes.

2. The display device of claim 1 , wherein an upper surface of the second organic insulating layer comprises a step structure above the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer.

3. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the second organic insulating layer comprises:

a first portion overlapping a first part of the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer and having a first thickness; and

a second portion integrally coupled to the first portion and overlapping a second part of the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer and the lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer, wherein the second portion has a second thickness less than the first thickness.

4. The display device of claim 3 , wherein the second portion of the second organic insulating layer extends onto the lower insulation layer, wherein an edge of the second portion of the second organic insulating layer is spaced apart from the edge of the integrated circuit.

5. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the second organic insulating layer is in direct contact with the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer, the lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer, and a part of an upper surface of the lower insulation layer.

6. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the lower insulation layer comprises an inorganic insulating material.

7. The display device of claim 1 , further comprising a touch input layer disposed in the display area and comprising a plurality of touch electrodes and a touch insulating layer,

wherein the touch insulating layer extends to the peripheral area and overlaps the second organic insulating layer.

8. The display device of claim 7 , wherein an edge of the touch insulating layer is above an upper surface of the second organic insulating layer.

9. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the first distance is about 80 micrometers (μm) or less.

10. A display device comprising:

a plurality of light-emitting diodes in a display area, the plurality of light-emitting diodes being electrically connected to a plurality of transistors;

a plurality of pad electrodes in a peripheral area outside the display area;

a first organic insulating layer interposed between the plurality of transistors and the plurality of light-emitting diodes in the display area and having an opening that overlaps the plurality of pad electrodes in the peripheral area;

an integrated circuit overlapping the plurality of pad electrodes and electrically connected to the plurality of pad electrodes, wherein an edge of the first organic insulating layer defining the opening is spaced apart from an edge of the integrated circuit by a first distance;

a second organic insulating layer, wherein:

in the display area, the second organic insulating layer is interposed between the first organic insulating layer and the plurality of light-emitting diodes, and

in the peripheral area, the second organic insulating layer overlaps an upper surface of the first organic insulating layer and a lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer including the edge of the first organic insulating layer;

a plurality of data lines passing through the display area; and

a plurality of connection lines electrically connecting the plurality of data lines to the plurality of pad electrodes.

11. The display device of claim 10 , wherein, in the peripheral area, an upper surface of the second organic insulating layer comprises a step structure above the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer.

12. The display device of claim 10 , wherein the second organic insulating layer comprises:

a first portion overlapping a first part of the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer and having a first thickness; and

a second portion integrally coupled to the first portion and overlapping a second part of the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer and the lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer, wherein the second portion has a second thickness less than the first thickness.

The display device of claim 12 , wherein the second portion of the second organic insulating layer extends onto a lower insulation layer under the first organic insulating layer, wherein an edge of the second portion of the second organic insulating layer is spaced apart from the edge of the integrated circuit.

14. The display device of claim 13 , wherein the lower insulation layer comprises an inorganic insulating material.

15. The display device of claim 10 , wherein, in the peripheral area, the second organic insulating layer is in direct contact with the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer, the lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer.

16. The display device of claim 10 , further comprising a touch input layer disposed in the display area and comprising a plurality of touch electrodes and a touch insulating layer,

wherein the touch insulating layer extends to the peripheral area and overlaps the second organic insulating layer.

17. A display device comprising:

a plurality of light-emitting diodes in a display area, the plurality of light-emitting diodes being electrically connected to a plurality of transistors;

a plurality of pad electrodes in a peripheral area outside the display area;

a first organic insulating layer interposed between the plurality of transistors and the plurality of light-emitting diodes in the display area and having an opening that overlaps the plurality of pad electrodes in the peripheral area;

an integrated circuit overlapping the plurality of pad electrodes and electrically connected to the plurality of pad electrodes, wherein an edge of the first organic insulating layer defining the opening is spaced apart from an edge of the integrated circuit;

a second organic insulating layer, wherein:

in the display area, the second organic insulating layer is interposed between the first organic insulating layer and the plurality of light-emitting diodes, and

in the peripheral area, the second organic insulating layer overlaps an upper surface of the first organic insulating layer and a lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer including the edge of the first organic insulating layer and extends onto a lower insulation layer under the first organic insulating layer beyond the edge of the first organic insulating layer;

a plurality of data lines passing through the display area; and

a plurality of connection lines electrically connecting the plurality of data lines to the plurality of pad electrodes.

18. The display device of claim 17 , wherein the lower insulation layer comprises an inorganic insulating material.

19. The display device of claim 17 , wherein the second organic insulating layer comprises:

a first portion overlapping the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer and having a first thickness; and

a second portion integrally coupled to the first portion and overlapping the lateral surface of the first organic insulating layer and a part of an upper surface of the lower insulation layer, wherein the second portion has a second thickness less than the first thickness.

20. The display device of claim 19 , wherein the second portion of the second organic insulating layer extends onto a part of the upper surface of the first organic insulating layer, and a coupling portion of the first portion and the second portion has a step structure.
