Abstract

In embodiments, a CPR chest compression system includes a retention structure that can retain the patient's body, and a compression mechanism that can perform automatically CPR compressions and releases to the patient's chest. The compression mechanism can pause the performing of the CPR compressions for a short time, so that an attendant can check the patient. The CPR system can include a user interface that can output a human-perceptible check patient prompt, to alert an attendant to check the patient during the pause. The compression mechanism can during a CPR session retreat a distance away from the patient's chest whereby the patient's chest can expand without active decompression of the patient's chest beyond the chest's natural resting position.

Claims (27)

1. A mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation (“CPR”) device, comprising:

a compression mechanism configured to automatically perform CPR compressions to a chest of a patient alternating with releases of the CPR compressions;

a user interface configured to receive input from a user and generate a signal, the user interface having a pause means and a restart-from-pause means; and

a controller configured to at least:

cause a driver to drive the compression mechanism to automatically perform the CPR compressions and releases of the CPR compressions,

initiate a check pause during which CPR compressions are not performed, the check pause having a predetermined check pause duration, and

receive the signal generated by the user interface and determine, based at least in part on the received signal, whether to maintain the predetermined check pause duration or depart from the predetermined check pause duration.

2. The CPR device of claim 1 , in which the pause means of the user interface is configured to generate a pause input responsive to a rescuer actuating the pause means.

3. The CPR device of claim 1 , in which the predetermined check pause duration is selected by a rescuer via the user interface before CPR compressions are performed.

4. The CPR device of claim 1 , in which the user interface is further configured to receive a selection of a pause mode, wherein the controller is further configured to generate a pause signal when the selection of the pause mode is received and further configured to cause the driver to stop the CPR compression when the selection of the pause mode is received.

5. The CPR device of claim 4 , in which departing from the predetermined check pause duration comprises selecting a pause mode.

6. The CPR device of claim 4 , in which the pause mode is a pause of a specifically selected duration.

7. The CPR device of claim 4 , in which the pause mode is a pulse check pause.

8. The CPR device of claim of claim 4 , in which the pause mode is an extended pause.

9. The CPR device of claim 1 , departing from the check pause duration comprises the rescuer manually restarting CPR compressions by actuating the restart-from-pause means before the check pause duration has ended.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs which, when executed by at least one processor of a system to assist a rescuer to perform, during a session, successive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (“CPR”) compressions on a chest of a patient by using the system, the programs result in operations comprising:

automatically performing CPR compressions to a chest of a patient alternating with releases of the CPR compressions;

receiving, at a user interface having a pause means and a restart-from-pause means, an input signal from a rescuer;

initiating a check pause during which CPR compressions are not performed, the check pause having a predetermined check pause duration

determining, based at least in part on the received input signal, whether to maintain the predetermined check pause duration or depart from the predetermined check pause duration.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs of claim 10 , wherein the user interface is further configured to receive a selection of a pause mode, wherein the programs result in operations further comprising generating a pause signal when the selection of the pause mode is received and causing the driver to stop the CPR compression when the selection of the pause mode is received.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs of claim 11 , wherein the programs result in operations further comprising initiating a pause extending beyond the predetermined check pause duration when an extended pause mode is selected.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs of claim 11 , wherein the programs result in operations further comprising initiating a pause for the rescuer to check the patient's pulse when a check pulse pause mode is selected.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs of claim 11 , wherein the programs result in operations further comprising initiating a pause of a specifically selected duration other than the predetermined check pause duration when the specifically selected duration is selected.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs of claim 11 , in which departing from the predetermined check pause duration comprises selecting a pause mode.

16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs of claim 10 , in which the predetermined check pause duration is selected by the rescuer via the user interface before CPR compressions are performed.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs of claim 10 , in which departing from the check pause duration comprises the rescuer manually restarting CPR compressions by actuating the restart-from-pause means before the check pause duration has ended.
