Abstract

A surgical robotic system automatically calibrates tubular and flexible surgical tools such as endoscopes. By compensating for unideal behavior of an endoscope, the surgical robotic system can accurately model motions of the endoscope and navigate the endoscope while performing a surgical procedure on a patient. During calibration, the surgical robotic system moves the endoscope to a target position and receives data describing an actual position and/or orientation of the endoscope. The surgical robotic system determines gain values based at least on the discrepancy between the target position and the actual position. The endoscope can include tubular components referred to as a sheath and leader. An instrument device manipulator of the surgical robotic system actuates pull wires coupled to the sheath and/or the leader, which causes the endoscope to articulate.

Claims (44)

1. A method comprising:

translating a first pull wire of a surgical instrument by a first gain value associated with a first command for moving the surgical instrument from a resting position to a first direction using a surgical robotic system;

receiving first spatial data indicating a first actual position of the surgical instrument having been moved in response to translating the first pull wire by the first gain value;

providing a second command to relax the surgical instrument to the resting position;

translating a second pull wire of the surgical instrument in response to a third command for moving the surgical instrument from the resting position to a second direction using the surgical robotic system;

receiving second spatial data indicating a second actual position of the surgical instrument having been moved in response to translating the second pull wire;

determining, for the first pull wire, a second gain value based on the first spatial data, the second spatial data, and the first gain value; and

storing the second gain value in association with the first pull wire.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second gain value is determined based in part on an aggregate of the first spatial data and the second spatial data.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first gain value is associated with the first direction and the second gain value is associated with the second direction.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first gain value is different than the second gain value.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first gain value is stored in association with the first direction.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical instrument comprises multiple segments having different levels of stiffness.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining the second gain value based in part on the different levels of stiffness.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating a matrix of gain values based on at least one of the first gain value or the second gain value.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising adjusting a fourth command using the matrix of gain values to generate an adjusted command.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first direction is a pitch direction and the second direction is a yaw direction.

11. A surgical robotic system comprising:

one or more robotic arms;

a surgical instrument comprising a plurality of pull wires; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage media storing instructions that when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform steps including:

translate a first pull wire of a surgical instrument by a first gain value associated with a first command for moving the surgical instrument from a resting position to a first direction;

receive first spatial data indicating a first actual position of the surgical instrument having been moved in response to translating the first pull wire by the first gain value;

provide a second command to relax the surgical instrument to the resting position;

translate a second pull wire of the surgical instrument in response to a third command for moving the surgical instrument from the resting position to a second direction;

receive second spatial data indicating a second actual position of the surgical instrument having been moved in response to translating the second pull wire;

determine, for the first pull wire, a second gain value based on the first spatial data, the second spatial data, and the first gain value; and

store the second gain values in association with the first pull wire.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second gain value is determined based in part on an aggregate of the first spatial data and the second spatial data.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first gain value is associated with the first direction and the second gain value is associated with the second direction.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first gain value is different than the second gain value.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first gain value is stored in association with the first direction.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the surgical instrument comprises multiple segments having different levels of stiffness.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable storage media further stores instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to determine the second gain value based in part on the different levels of stiffness.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable storage media further stores instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to generate a matrix of gain values based on at least one of the first gain value or the second gain value.

19. A non-transitory computer-readable storage media storing instructions that when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform steps including:

translate a first pull wire of a surgical instrument by a first gain value associated with a first command for moving the surgical instrument from a resting position to a first direction;

receive first spatial data indicating a first actual position of the surgical instrument having been moved in response to translating the first pull wire by the first gain value;

provide a second command to relax the surgical instrument to the resting position;

translate a second pull wire of the surgical instrument in response to a third command for moving the surgical instrument from the resting position to a second direction;

receive second spatial data indicating a second actual position of the surgical instrument having been moved in response to translating the second pull wire;

determine, for first pull wire, a second gain value based on the first spatial data, the second spatial data, and the first gain value; and

store the second gain value in association with the first pull wire.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 19 , wherein the second gain value is determined based in part on an aggregate of the first spatial data and the second spatial data.
