Abstract

A surgical stapling system comprising an actuator system operable to generate independent motions including end effector articulation motions, an end effector closing motion, and a staple firing motion. The actuator system comprises motor driven elements. The end effector articulation motions, the end effector closing motion, and the staple firing motion are transmitted through the motor driven elements. The surgical stapling system further comprises an elongate shaft extending from the housing, an articulation region comprising a first articulation joint and a second articulation joint, and a stapling end effector responsive to the independent motions generated by the actuator system. The stapling end effector comprises a staple cartridge jaw, an anvil jaw, and a firing member. The an anvil jaw comprises a longitudinal anvil slot and a longitudinal recess extending from the longitudinal anvil slot. The firing member comprises an anvil-engaging portion and a cartridge jaw-engaging portion.

Claims (71)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a housing;

a plurality of motor-driven inputs to independently drive end effector articulation motions, an end effector closing motion, and a proximal-to-distal staple firing motion;

an elongate shaft extending from the housing;

a first articulation joint defining a first articulation axis;

a second articulation joint defining a second articulation axis transverse to the first articulation axis;

a stapling end effector, wherein the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint are positioned intermediate the elongate shaft and the stapling end effector, and wherein the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint permit the stapling end effector to rotate relative to the elongate shaft about two different articulation axes in response to the end effector articulation motions, and wherein the stapling end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge jaw comprising a longitudinal cartridge slot;

an anvil jaw, comprising:

a longitudinal anvil slot; and

a longitudinal recess extending from the longitudinal anvil slot; and

a firing driver, comprising:

an anvil-engaging cam configured to slidingly engage a sidewall of the longitudinal recess; and

a cartridge jaw-engaging cam configured to engage the staple cartridge jaw, wherein the firing driver is configured to control the relative spacing between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw during the proximal-to-distal staple firing motion; and

a firing shaft coupled to the firing driver, wherein the firing shaft extends through the elongate shaft, the first articulation joint, and the second articulation joint into the stapling end effector, and wherein a pushing force is applied to the firing driver by way of the firing shaft to deploy staples and cut tissue clamped between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw during the proximal-to-distal staple firing motion.

The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein the stapling end effector further comprises a firing lockout on one of the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw, wherein the firing lockout is configured to engage a portion of the firing driver to prevent distal advancement of the firing driver from a starting position to an ending position unless an unfired surgical staple cartridge is operably supported in the staple cartridge jaw.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein the stapling end effector further comprises a staple cartridge assembly positioned within the staple cartridge jaw.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising a closure driver, wherein a pushing force is applied to the closure driver to clamp tissue between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw.

5. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a plurality of motor-driven inputs to drive end effector articulation motions, an end effector closing motion, and a proximal-to-distal staple firing motion;

an elongate shaft;

a first articulation joint defining a first articulation axis;

a second articulation joint defining a second articulation axis, wherein the first articulation axis and the second articulation axis are non-parallel axes; and

a stapling end effector, wherein the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint are positioned intermediate the elongate shaft and the stapling end effector, and wherein the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint permit the stapling end effector to rotate relative to the elongate shaft about two different articulation axes in response to the end effector articulation motions, and wherein the stapling end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge jaw comprising a longitudinal cartridge slot;

an anvil jaw, comprising:

a longitudinal anvil slot; and

a longitudinal recess extending from the longitudinal anvil slot; and

a firing driver, comprising:

an anvil-engaging cam configured to slidingly engage a wall of the longitudinal recess; and

a cartridge jaw-engaging cam configured to engage the staple cartridge jaw, wherein the firing driver is configured to control the relative spacing between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw during the proximal-to-distal staple firing motion.

The surgical stapling system of claim 5 , wherein the stapling end effector further comprises a firing lockout on one of the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw, wherein the firing lockout is configured to engage a portion of the firing driver to prevent distal advancement of the firing driver from a starting position to an ending position unless an unfired surgical staple cartridge is operably supported in the staple cartridge jaw.

The surgical stapling system of claim 5 , further comprises a firing shaft coupled to the firing driver, wherein the firing shaft extends through the elongate shaft, the first articulation joint, and the second articulation joint into the stapling end effector, and wherein a pushing force is applied to the firing driver by way of the firing shaft to deploy staples and cut tissue clamped between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw during the proximal-to-distal stapling firing motion.

8. The surgical stapling system of claim 7 , further comprising a closure driver, wherein a pushing force is applied to the closure driver to clamp tissue between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw.

9. The surgical stapling system of claim 5 , wherein the stapling end effector further comprises a staple cartridge assembly positioned within the staple cartridge jaw.

10. A stapling end effector for use with a plurality of motor-driven inputs to independently drive end effector articulation motions, an end effector closing motion, and a staple firing motion, wherein the stapling end effector comprises:

a housing;

motor-driven drivers, wherein the motor-driven drivers transmit the end effector articulation motions, the end effector closing motion, and the staple firing motion to the stapling end effector;

a first articulation joint defining a first articulation axis;

a second articulation joint defining a second articulation axis transverse to the first articulation axis, wherein the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint permit the stapling end effector to articulate about the first articulation axis and the second articulation axis in response to the end effector articulation motions;

a staple cartridge jaw comprising a longitudinal cartridge slot;

an anvil jaw, comprising:

a longitudinal anvil slot; and

a longitudinal recess extending from the longitudinal anvil slot; and

a firing driver, comprising:

an anvil-engaging cam configured to slidingly engage a sidewall of the longitudinal recess; and

a cartridge jaw-engaging cam configured to engage the staple cartridge jaw, wherein the firing driver is configured to control the relative spacing between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw during the staple firing motion.

The stapling end effector of claim 10 , further comprising a firing lockout on one of the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw, wherein the firing lockout is configured to engage a portion of the firing driver to prevent distal advancement of the firing driver from a starting position to an ending position unless an unfired surgical staple cartridge is operably supported in the staple cartridge jaw.

12. The stapling end effector of claim 10 , further comprises a firing shaft coupled to the firing driver, wherein the firing shaft extends through the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint into the stapling end effector.

13. The stapling end effector of claim 12 , wherein a pushing force is applied to the firing driver by way of the firing shaft to deploy staples and cut tissue clamped between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw.

14. The stapling end effector of claim 13 , further comprising a closure driver, wherein a pushing force is applied to the closure driver to clamp tissue between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw.

15. The stapling end effector of claim 10 , further comprising a staple cartridge assembly positioned within the staple cartridge jaw.

16. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a housing;

a plurality of motor-driven inputs to independently drive end effector articulation motions, an end effector closing motion, and a staple firing motion;

an elongate shaft extending from the housing;

a first articulation joint defining a first articulation axis;

a second articulation joint defining a second articulation axis orthogonal to the first articulation axis; and

a stapling end effector, wherein the first articulation joint and the second articulation joint are positioned intermediate the elongate shaft and the stapling end effector, wherein the first articulation joints permits the second articulation joint to rotate relative to the elongate shaft, wherein the second articulation joint permits the stapling end effector to rotate relative to the first articulation joint, and wherein the stapling end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge jaw comprising a longitudinal cartridge slot;

an anvil jaw, comprising:

a longitudinal anvil slot; and

a longitudinal recess extending from the longitudinal anvil slot;

a firing driver driven distally during the staple firing motion, the firing drive comprising:

an anvil-engaging cam configured to slidingly engage a sidewall of the longitudinal recess; and

a cartridge jaw-engaging cam configured to engage the staple cartridge jaw, wherein the firing driver is configured to control the relative spacing between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw during the staple firing motion; and

a firing lockout on one of the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw, wherein the firing lockout is configured to engage a portion of the firing driver to prevent distal advancement of the firing driver from a starting position to an ending position unless an unfired surgical staple cartridge is operably supported in the staple cartridge jaw.

17. The surgical stapling system of claim 16 , further comprises a firing shaft coupled to the firing driver, wherein the firing shaft extends through the elongate shaft, the first articulation joint, and the second articulation joint into the stapling end effector.

18. The surgical stapling system of claim 17 , wherein a pushing force is applied to the firing driver by way of the firing shaft to deploy staples and cut tissue clamped between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw.

19. The surgical stapling system of claim 18 , further comprising a closure driver, wherein a pushing force is applied to the closure driver to clamp tissue between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw.

20. The surgical stapling system of claim 16 , wherein the stapling end effector further comprises a staple cartridge assembly positioned within the staple cartridge jaw.
