Abstract

An external medical device is provided which is configured to provide a user with access to one or more training modules. The external medical device includes one or more electrodes configured to detect a cardiac activity of a patient, an audio and/or visual output, and a controller coupled to the audio and/or visual output. The controller is configured to: detect at least one of a predetermined event and a device use pattern; and responsive to detecting the at least one of the predetermined event and the device use pattern, provide the patient access to one or more training modules relating to a use or a configuration of the external medical device via the audio and/or visual output. The device can also include a user interface configured to provide access to at least one training module according to a schedule of training modules for the patient.

Claims (57)

1. An external medical device for providing a patient access to a training module, the external medical device comprising:

a plurality of sensors for monitoring a physiological parameter of the patient;

a plurality of therapy electrodes configured to deliver a therapeutic defibrillating shock to the patient; and

a controller that is electrically coupled to the plurality of sensors and the plurality of therapy electrodes, the controller comprising

a user interface configured to provide the patient access to a collection of training modules relating to a use or a configuration of the external medical device, and

a response button,

wherein the controller is configured to

make a first determination that the patient should receive training relating to the use or the configuration of the external medical device;

provide, via the user interface, a list of training modules, the list being organized based on training module priority;

receive a user selection of the training module from the list;

after receiving the user selection, present, via the user interface, the training module;

make a second determination that the patient is experiencing a cardiac arrhythmia, and in response to making the second determination, generate an instruction for the patient to actuate the response button, and

in response to the patient actuating the response button, withhold delivery of the therapeutic defibrillating shock to the patient.

2. The external medical device of claim 1 , wherein:

the external medical device further comprises a display; and

the first determination is made based on a training schedule.

3. The external medical device of claim 1 , wherein the list of training modules includes a scheduled date and/or time for at least one of the training modules provided in the list.

4. The external medical device of claim 2 , further comprising:

a garment configured to be worn on a body of the patient;

a therapy pad that is connected to or embedded in the garment, and that is connected to a defibrillation shock generator capable of generating the therapeutic defibrillating shock; and

a sensor configured to determine a position of the therapy pad relative to the patient.

5. The external medical device of claim 2 , wherein the training schedule includes a reoccurring training module that is scheduled for repeated use by the patient at predetermined intervals.

6. The external medical device of claim 2 , wherein:

the training schedule includes a scheduled time that is within 24 to 72 hours after an initial use of the external medical device.

7. The external medical device of claim 2 , wherein:

the external medical device further comprises a rechargeable battery;

the controller is powered by the rechargeable battery; and

the training module comprises instructions for charging the rechargeable battery.

8. The external medical device of claim 1 , further comprising providing, via the user interface, an option for the patient to delay the training relating to the use or the configuration of the external medical device.

9. The external medical device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to detect a device use pattern that is indicative of an improper use of the external medical device.

10. The external medical device of claim 9 , further comprising:

a garment configured to be worn on a body of the patient; and

a therapy pad that is connected to or embedded in the garment, and that is connected to a defibrillation shock generator capable of generating the therapeutic defibrillating shock; and

a sensor configured to determine a position of the therapy pad relative to the patient.

11. The external medical device of claim 9 , wherein the first determination is responsive to detecting the device use pattern.

12. The external medical device of claim 9 , wherein the controller is further configured to record a plurality of alerts provided to the patient, the alerts indicating the improper use of the external medical device.

13. The external medical device of claim 12 , wherein the device use pattern is detected based at least in part on the plurality of alerts.

14. The external medical device of claim 9 , wherein:

the external medical device further comprises a rechargeable battery;

the controller is powered by the rechargeable battery; and

the training module comprises instructions for charging the rechargeable battery.

The external medical device of claim 1 , further comprising a speaker configured to generate first and second alarms which are audibly distinguishable from each other, wherein the training module instructs the patient to respond to the first alarm with a first responsive action and to respond to the second alarm with a second responsive action.

16. The external medical device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to, after presenting the training module, provide, via the user interface, an updated list of training modules that excludes the training module.

17. The external medical device of claim 15 , further comprising:

a garment configured to be worn on a body of the patient;

a therapy pad that is connected to or embedded in the garment, and that is connected to a defibrillation shock generator capable of generating the therapeutic defibrillating shock; and

a sensor configured to determine a position of the therapy pad relative to the patient.

18. The external medical device of claim 15 , wherein:

the controller is configured to cause the speaker to generate the first alarm in response to making the second determination; and

the first responsive action is actuation of the response button.

19. The external medical device of claim 15 , wherein:

the controller is configured to cause the speaker to generate the second alarm in response to detecting a device use pattern that is indicative of an improper use of the external medical device; and

the second responsive action is interacting with the user interface.

20. The external medical device of claim 15 , wherein:

the external medical device further comprises a rechargeable battery;

the controller is powered by the rechargeable battery; and

the training module comprises instructions for charging the rechargeable battery.
