Abstract

Embodiments of display devices improve the attachment between the connection unit on which a driving integrated circuit is mounted and a substrate of a display panel, and substantially prevent detachment of the connection unit. For example, dummy lines may be provided in the connection unit to enhance the spreading of an adhesive film to securely attach the connection unit to the substrate of the display.

Claims (43)

1. A display device comprising:

a substrate;

a pixel electrically connected to a gate line and a data line, both the gate line and the data line being on a surface of the substrate;

a connection unit electrically connected to one of the gate line and the data line; and

a driving integrated circuit mounted on the connection unit, wherein

the connection unit comprises:

a lead line electrically connected to the driving integrated circuit; and

at least one first dummy line adjacent to a first side of the connection unit, the first side overlapping a portion of an edge of the substrate in a view in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the substrate, the at least one first dummy line being electrically isolated, and

the at least one first dummy line overlaps a portion of the surface of the substrate in the view.

2. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one first dummy line has an end portion at the first side of the connection unit.

3. The display device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the at least one first dummy line extends from the first side of the connection unit toward another side of the connection unit.

4. The display device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein an angle between the at least one first dummy line and the first side of the connection unit is about 90 degrees.

5. The display device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein

the at least one first dummy line comprises multiple dummy lines, and

a lesser angle of respective angles among the multiple dummy lines and the first side of the connection unit is greater than about 0 degrees and less than about 90 degrees.

6. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one first dummy line is between the substrate and a base layer of the connection unit.

7. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein substantially an entire surface of the at least one first dummy line facing the substrate is not covered by a cover layer of the connection unit.

8. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising an anisotropic conductive film between at least a portion of the at least one first dummy line and the substrate.

9. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one first dummy line comprises multiple electrically isolated dummy lines.

10. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one first dummy line comprises multiple electrically isolated dummy lines extending substantially parallel to one another.

11. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

the at least one first dummy line comprises multiple electrically isolated dummy lines, and

each of the multiple electrically isolated dummy lines has substantially a same length.

12. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

the at least one first dummy line comprises multiple electrically isolated dummy lines,

each of the multiple electrically isolated dummy lines has a respective length, the respective lengths decrease in size with decreasing distance of a corresponding electrically isolated dummy line among the multiple electrically isolated dummy lines from a third side of the connection unit, and

in the view, the third side of the connection unit overlaps a portion of the surface of the substrate and does not overlap the edge of the substrate.

13. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

the at least one first dummy line comprises multiple electrically isolated dummy lines,

two adjacent electrically isolated dummy lines among the multiple electrically isolated dummy lines are spaced apart from one another by a variable distance that increases as the two adjacent electrically isolated dummy lines become more adjacent to a third side of the connection unit, and

in the view, the third side of the connection unit overlaps the substrate and does not overlap the edge of the substrate.

14. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one first dummy line has a variable width that gradually decreases with increasing distance from the first side.

15. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

the at least one first dummy line comprises multiple electrically isolated dummy lines, and

respective distances between adjacent electrically isolated dummy lines among the multiple electrically isolated dummy lines are substantially uniform.

16. The display device as claimed in claim 15 , wherein each of the respective distances is in a range of about 15 μm to about 30 μm.

17. The display device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the end portion of the at least one first dummy line comprises a carbonized area.

18. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein an end portion of the at least one first dummy line is spaced apart from the first side by a determined distance.

19. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one second dummy line adjacent to a second side of the connection unit, the second side opposing the first side,

wherein the at least one second dummy line is electrically isolated.

20. The display device as claimed in claim 19 , wherein the at least one second dummy line and the at least one first dummy line are symmetric to one another in shape.

21. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the lead line comprises an output lead line and an auxiliary lead line.
