Abstract

The present disclosure relates to detecting distracted driving on a mobile device and mitigating distracted driving by determining whether a mobile device is used by a driver of a vehicle or by a passenger of the vehicle. The system can determine that the mobile device is in a vehicle and modify the functionality of the mobile device to transition the mobile device into an automobile mode. Vehicle data and/or mobile device data can be used to determine a number of individuals in the vehicle. An identity of the operator of the mobile device can be authenticated based on authentication information obtained by the mobile device. Based on the authenticated identity of the operator of the mobile device, a driving score associated with the driver can be modified, where the score indicates a number of instances of distracted driving by the driver.

responsive to determining that the operator of the client device is the driver of the vehicle, and while the vehicle is in the defined operational state, dynamically increasing a driving score associated with the driver of the vehicle in response to driver actions determined to be likely to avoid damage and dynamically decreasing the driving score associated with the driver of the vehicle in response to driver actions determined to be likely to cause damage.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining that the operator of the client device is the driver of the vehicle further comprises identifying which region, of a defined set of regions inside the vehicle, the client device is in.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the determining that the operator of the client device is the driver of the vehicle further comprises determining that the identified region, the client device is in, is a region corresponding to a driver region.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the determining that the operator of the client device is the driver of the vehicle further comprises identifying the region based on a vehicle sensor having been activated for the region, the vehicle sensor being a seat weight sensor, a vehicle door sensor, and/or a vehicle imaging device.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

identifying the multiple individuals that correspond to the multiple mobile devices within communication range of the client device;

wherein the determining that the operator of the client device is the driver of the vehicle is further based, at least in part, on the identifying of the multiple individuals.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the defined operational state is further determined based on an analysis of an ignition state information or transmission state information included in a set of vehicle sensor data.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

obtaining a set of movement characteristics; and

analyzing the movement characteristics according to a set of driving rules to determine that the movement characteristics are within defined parameters;

wherein the modifying the driving score associated with the driver of the vehicle comprises, responsive to the determining that the movement characteristics are within the defined parameters, increasing the driving score.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting that the vehicle is no longer in the defined operational state; and

responsive to the detecting that the vehicle is no longer in the defined operational state, ceasing updates to the driving score.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein detecting that the vehicle is no longer is the defined operational state includes determining that a transmission state transitioned into a parked state.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

responsive the detecting that the vehicle is no longer in the defined operation state, ceasing the limiting vehicle mode on the client device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the ceasing the limiting vehicle mode on the client device includes deactivating the authentication interface on the client device.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dynamically increasing the driving score, associated with the driver of the vehicle, is based on a determination that the driver does not operable the client device for a period of time.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to perform a process comprising:

acquiring, from a client device, a set of client device data;

determining that a vehicle is in a defined operational state by processing the set of client device data;

determining that the client device is within communication range of an entertainment system of the vehicle;

based on i) the determining that the vehicle is in the defined operational state and ii) the determining that the client device is within communication range of the entertainment system of the vehicle, implementing a limiting vehicle mode on the client device that limits access to a series of features of applications executing on the client device;

determining that an operator of the client device is a driver of the vehicle by:

determining that multiple individuals are located in the vehicle by detecting multiple mobile devices within communication range of the client device; and

based on A) the implementing of the limiting vehicle mode on the client device and B) the determining that multiple individuals are located in the vehicle:

presenting, via the client device, an authentication interface that includes a request for a set of identifying information of an operator of the client device;

obtaining, via the client device, the set of identifying information; and

comparing the set of identifying information with known authentication information to authenticate an identity of the operator of the client device, wherein the determining that the operator of the client device is the driver of the vehicle is based on the authenticated identity of the operator of the client device; and

responsive to determining that the operator of the client device is the driver of the vehicle, and while the vehicle is in the defined operational state, dynamically increasing a driving score associated with the driver of the vehicle in response to driver actions determined to be likely to avoid damage and dynamically decreasing the driving score associated with the driver of the vehicle in response to driver actions determined to be likely to cause damage.
