Abstract

A cochlear implant and analysis system includes a stimulator, an input source, a signal processor, a wireless communication interface, and an external device. The system can receive an acoustic stimulus, generate an input signal representative thereof, and apply a transfer function to the input signal to generate and output a stimulation signal to the stimulator. The signal processor can receive an analysis input indicating a first signal for analysis and generate an analysis signal based on the received analysis input. The first signal can be an input signal from an input source or a result of one or more processing steps. The signal processor can output the analysis signal to the wireless communication interface with the wireless communication interface configured to output a signal representative of the analysis signal to an external device.

Claims (44)

1. A cochlear implant and analysis system comprising:

an external device comprising a first wireless communication interface and a user interface; and

a fully implantable cochlear implant system comprising:

a stimulator configured to provide electrical stimulation;

an input source configured to receive an input representative of ambient sound and generate an input signal representative of the received input;

a signal processor in communication with the stimulator and the input source, the signal processor being programmed with a transfer function so that the signal processor outputs a stimulation signal to the stimulator based on the input signal received from the input source and the transfer function; and

a second wireless communication interface; and wherein

the external device is configured to:

receive, via the user interface, a user input selecting a first signal, the first signal comprising the input signal or a result of one or more processing steps performed by the signal processor; and

output, via the first wireless communication interface, an analysis input designating the first signal for analysis based on the received user input; and

the fully implantable cochlear implant system is configured to:

receive, from the external device using the second wireless communication interface, the analysis input designating the first signal for analysis; and

in response to the received analysis input:

generate an analysis signal representative of the first signal; and

output a signal representative of the analysis signal to the external device via the second wireless communication interface.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an implantable battery and/or communication module in communication with the signal processor and including the second wireless communication interface.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the signal processor of the fully implantable cochlear implant system is configured to generate the analysis signal and output the analysis signal to the implantable battery and/or communication module.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the implantable battery and/or communication module is configured to output a second signal to the external device via the second wireless communication interface, the second signal being representative of the analysis signal received from the signal processor.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein outputting the second signal comprises streaming the analysis signal from the second wireless communication interface to the external device.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first signal comprises the input signal received from the input source.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first signal comprises the stimulation signal.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the generating the analysis signal comprises transforming the first signal so that the analysis signal comprises a frequency domain representation of the first signal.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the analysis signal comprises the first signal.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the external device is configured to receive the signal representative of the analysis signal via the first wireless communication interface and output a representation of the analysis signal.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external device comprises a display, and wherein the outputting the representation of the analysis signal comprises displaying a visual representation of the analysis signal on the display.

12. The cochlear implant and analysis system of claim 10 , wherein the external device comprises a speaker.

13. The cochlear implant and analysis system of claim 12 , wherein the output representation of the analysis signal comprises an audio output representative of the analysis signal.

14. The cochlear implant and analysis system of claim 13 , wherein:

the first signal comprises the stimulation signal; and

the audio output representative of the analysis signal is representative of the stimulation signal.

15. A method of outputting a representation of an identified signal present within a fully implanted cochlear implant system comprising:

receiving, via a user interface of an external device, a user input selecting a first signal, the first comprising an input signal representative of ambient sound or a result of one or more processing steps of a signal processor of the fully implanted cochlear implant system;

outputting, via a first wireless communication interface of the external device, an analysis input designating the first signal for analysis based on the received user input;

receiving, from the external device, the analysis input designating the first signal for analysis via a second wireless communication interface of the fully implanted cochlear implant system;

in response to receiving the analysis input:

generating, within the fully implanted cochlear implant system, an analysis signal representative of the first signal; and

outputting, via the second wireless communication interface of the fully implanted cochlear implant system, a signal representative of the analysis signal to the external device;

receiving, via the first wireless communication interface of the external device, a signal representative of the analysis signal; and

outputting, at the external device, a representation of the received signal.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the outputting the representation of the received signal comprises outputting a visual representation on a display.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the outputting the representation of the received signal comprises outputting an audio representation via a speaker.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the analysis signal is the first signal, and wherein the first signal comprises either an input signal received from an input source of the fully implanted cochlear implant system or a result of one or more processing stages performed on the input signal.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein generating the analysis signal comprises transforming the first signal into the frequency domain.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein outputting, at the external device, a representation of the received signal comprises outputting a frequency domain representation of the identified first signal.
