Abstract

A discectomy tool comprising: a cannula having an outer surface having a longitudinal bore therein, a proximal end and a distal end; a steering wire disposed in the longitudinal bore; a flexible, hollow transmission shaft disposed in the cannula, the shaft having a throughbore, a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and an outer surface having a thread extending therefrom; an irrigation source fluidly connected to the throughbore; a cutting tip attached to the distal end portion of the transmission shaft.

Claims (22)

1. A discectomy tool comprising:

a) a cannula having an outer surface having a longitudinal bore therein, a proximal end and a distal end, wherein a portion of the cannula has longitudinally repeating cutouts to produce increased flexibility;

b) a transmission shaft disposed in the cannula having a throughbore, a proximal end portion and a distal end portion;

c) a rotatable cutting tip extending out of the bore at the distal end of the cannula, the cutting tip having a proximal end portion; and

d) a flexible helical auger disposed in the cannula having a proximal end portion, an intermediate portion and a distal end portion, wherein the proximal end portion of the auger is connected to the transmission shaft such that relative rotation between the proximal end portion of the auger and the proximal end portion of the transmission shaft is prevented, the intermediate portion is loosely wrapped around the transmission shaft, and the distal end portion of the auger is connected to the cutting tip such that relative rotation between the distal end portion of the auger and the cutting tip is prevented;

wherein the transmission shaft and auger are adapted to rotate within the longitudinal bore of the cannula to rotate the cutting tip and consecutive turns of the auger are separated from one another to form recesses that collect material and transport it in the proximal direction when the auger is rotated.

2. The discectomy tool of claim 1 , the proximal end portion of the auger is connected to the proximal end portion of the transmission shaft, and the distal end portion of the auger is connected to the proximal end portion of the cutting tip.

3. The discectomy tool of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first steering element disposed in a first longitudinal recess formed in the outer surface of the cannula.

4. The discectomy tool of claim 3 , wherein the first longitudinal recess has an opening at the outer surface and the steering element has a maximum cross-section, wherein the maximum cross-section is greater than the opening of the recess at the outer surface.

5. The discectomy tool of claim 3 , wherein the cannula has a second longitudinal recess in its outer surface, the tool further comprising:

a) a second steering element disposed in the second longitudinal recess of the outer surface;

wherein the first and second steering elements are bilaterally and longitudinally disposed on the outer surface of the cannula.

6. The tool of claim 5 , wherein the second longitudinal recess and the second steering element have matching dovetail cross-sections.

7. The tool of claim 5 , wherein the steering elements is a flat metallic or polymeric strip.

8. The tool of claim 5 , wherein the first steering wire contacts the outer surface of the cannula substantially along the single bending plane; and

the second steering wire contacts the outer surface of the cannula substantially along the single bending plane.

9. The discectomy tool of claim 1 , wherein the cannula includes a first longitudinal face and a second opposed longitudinal face, and wherein the longitudinally repeating cutouts are a plurality of alternating, opposed transverse cutouts formed on first longitudinal face.

10. The tool of claim 9 , wherein the cutouts have a tapered distal end portion so as to form a bullet shape.

11. The tool of claim 9 , wherein at least one cutout has a proximal end portion, a middle portion and a distal end portion, each portion having a width, and wherein the width of the middle portion of the cutout is greater than the width of either the proximal end portion or the distal end portion.

12. The discectomy tool of claim 1 , further comprising an irrigation source fluidly connected to the throughbore, and wherein the flexible auger comprises a central lumen connected to a suction device configured to transport material from the cutting tip through the central lumen in the proximal direction.

13. The discectomy tool of claim 1 , wherein the repeating cutouts form a square wave in a face of the cannula.
