Abstract

The tibial implant includes an integral baseplate, keel and four spikes. Each of the spikes include a non-tapering section and a tapering section, four free ends and four fillets. The spikes are specifically spaced about the baseplate and include porous outer surfaces adjacent to the baseplate.

Claims (34)

1. A tibial implant comprising:

a baseplate including a solid bearing support portion and a porous bone-contacting portion extending from the bearing support portion, the porous bone-contacting portion having pore structures of differing shapes;

a keel including a pair of flanges extending from the baseplate and defining intersecting planes and further including an additional flange extending away from the pair of flanges within a bisecting plane bisecting the keel; and

four spikes extending away from the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate at locations spaced about the keel, each of the spikes having a non-tapering section and a tapering section extending from the non-tapering section and tapering to a point, the baseplate, keel and spikes formed entirely of metallic material, each of the spikes including four free ends and four fillets, each of the free ends being connected to two adjacent ones of the free ends by respective ones of the fillets, and wherein the free ends taper towards the point,

wherein the non-tapering sections of each of the spikes include a porous outer surface adjacent to the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate and the tapering sections of each of the spikes are solid,

wherein a first pair of the spikes extend away from a first side of the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate and a second pair of the spikes extend away from a second side of the bone-contacting portion opposite the first side of the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate, the first and the second sides defining an entirety of the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate, and

wherein the spikes of the first pair of the spikes are spaced apart from each other a greater distance than the spikes of the second pair of the spikes are spaced apart from each other.

2. The tibial implant of claim 1 , wherein the porous bone-contacting portion is integrally melted to the bearing support portion.

3. The tibial implant of claim 1 , wherein the four spikes are integrally formed with the baseplate.

4. The tibial implant of 1 , wherein the first pair of the spikes lie on one side of a transverse plane transverse to the bisecting plane and the second pair of the spikes lie on the opposite side of the transverse plane.

5. The tibial implant of claim 1 , wherein each porous outer surface of each spike extends less than half an entire length of each spike.

6. The tibial implant of claim 1 , further comprising a polymeric bearing portion coupled with the baseplate.

7. A tibial implant comprising:

a baseplate including a solid bearing support portion and a porous bone-contacting portion extending from the bearing support portion;

a keel including three flanges extending from the baseplate; and

four pegs extending away from the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate, each of the pegs having a non-tapering section, a tapering section extending from the non-tapering section and tapering to a point, four free ends and four fillets, each of the free ends being connected to two adjacent ones of the free ends by respective ones of the fillets, and tapering towards the point,

wherein the baseplate, keel and pegs are formed entirely of metallic material.

8. The tibial implant of claim 7 , wherein a first pair of the pegs extend away from a first side of the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate and a second pair of the pegs extend away from a second side of the bone-contacting portion opposite the first side of the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate, wherein the pegs of the first pair of the pegs are spaced apart from each other a greater distance than the pegs of the second pair of the pegs are spaced apart from each other.

9. The tibial implant of claim 7 , wherein the porous bone-contacting portion has pore structures of differing shapes.

10. The tibial implant of claim 9 , wherein the pore structures include unit cells.

11. The tibial implant of claim 7 , wherein first and second of the flanges define intersecting planes and a third flange extends within a bisecting plane bisecting the keel.

12. The tibial implant of claim 7 , wherein the pegs are spaced about the keel.

13. The tibial implant of claim 7 , wherein the non-tapering sections of each of the pegs include a porous outer surface adjacent to the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate and the tapering sections of each of the pegs are solid.

14. The tibial implant of claim 13 , wherein each porous outer surface of each peg extends less than half an entire length of each peg.

15. The tibial implant of claim 7 , wherein the porous bone-contacting portion is integrally melted to the bearing support portion.

16. The tibial implant of claim 7 , wherein the four pegs are integrally formed with the baseplate.

17. The tibial implant of claim 7 , further comprising a polymeric bearing portion coupled with the baseplate.

18. A tibial implant comprising:

a baseplate including a solid bearing support portion and an integrally formed porous bone-contacting portion extending from the bearing support portion;

a keel including first, second and third flanges extending from the baseplate, the first and second flanges forming a v-shape and the third flange extending from the connection between the first and second flanges; and

four pegs extending away from the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate, each of the pegs having a non-tapering section, a tapering section extending from the non-tapering section and tapering to a point, four free ends and four fillets, each of the free ends being connected to two adjacent ones of the free ends by respective ones of the fillets, and tapering towards the point,

wherein the baseplate, keel and pegs are formed entirely of metallic material.

19. The tibial implant of claim 18 , further comprising a polymeric bearing portion coupled with the baseplate.

20. The tibial implant of claim 18 , wherein the non-tapering sections of each of the pegs include a porous outer surface adjacent to the bone-contacting portion of the baseplate and the tapering sections of each of the pegs are solid wherein each porous outer surface of each peg extends less than half an entire length of each peg.
