Abstract

A zipper closure for use in a package includes first and second closure strips. Each of the first and second closure strips includes at least one closure profile and a flange. The flange of the first closure strip includes outer and inner flange portions. The outer flange portion of the first closure strip encompasses and is integrally connected to the inner flange portion of the first closure strip at a bending point. The inner flange portion of the first closure strip includes the at least one closure profile. The inner flange portion of the first closure strip has a length less than the length of the outer flange portion of the first closure strip. The closure profile of the first closure strip is located between an open end of the inner flange portion and the bending point.

Claims (36)

1. A polymeric zipper closure for use in a package, the package including opposing body panels, a bottom and an open mouth opposite of the bottom, the zipper closure being configured to be attached and located in the open mouth, the polymeric zipper closure comprising:

a first closure strip comprising at least one closure profile and a flange, the flange of the first closure strip including an outer flange portion and an inner flange portion, the outer flange portion of the first closure strip encompassing and being integrally connected to the inner flange portion of the first closure strip at a bending point, the inner flange portion of the first closure strip including the at least one closure profile, the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip being located between an open end of the inner flange portion of the first closure portion and the bending point; and

a second closure strip comprising at least one closure profile and a flange, the flange of the second closure strip consisting of a generally straight portion, the flange of the second closure strip including an inner surface and an outer surface, the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip extending from the inner surface of the second closure strip,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip are configured to interlock with each other,

wherein the outer flange portion of the first closure strip and the outer surface of the flange of the second closure strip are configured to be attached to a respective one of the opposing body panels,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip are configured to be unlocked by grasping and moving the flange of the second closure strip and the inner flange portion of the first closure strip from each other,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip are not configured to be opened by grasping and pulling the outer flange portion of the first closure strip outwardly and pulling the flange of the second closure strip outwardly.

2. The zipper closure according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip is a plurality of closure profiles and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip is a plurality of closure profiles.

3. The zipper closure according to claim 1 , wherein the inner flange portion of the first closure portion is bent towards the flange of the second closure strip.

4. The zipper closure according to claim 1 , wherein the inner flange portion and the outer flange portion of the first closure strip are at an angle of from about 15 to about 50 degrees with respect to each other.

The zipper closure according to claim 1 , wherein one of the at least one closure profile of the first and second closure strips is a female profile with a cross-section being U-shaped having ends of its arms being bent inward, and the other one of the at least one closure profile of the first and second closure strips is a male profile with a cross-section being arrowhead-shaped.

The zipper closure according to claim 1 , wherein one of the at least one closure profile of the first and second closure strips includes a plurality of female closure profiles and the other one of the at least one closure profile of the first and second closure strips includes a plurality of male closure profiles.

7. The zipper closure according to claim 1 , wherein each of the at least one closure profile of the first and second closure strips includes a male closure profile and a female closure profile.

8. A zipper closure for use in a package, the package including opposing body panels, a bottom and an open mouth opposite of the bottom, the zipper closure being configured to be attached and located entirely in the open mouth, the zipper closure comprising:

a first closure strip comprising at least one closure profile and a flange, the flange of the first closure strip including an outer flange portion and an inner flange portion, the outer flange portion of the first closure strip encompassing and being integrally connected to the inner flange portion of the first closure strip at a bending point, the inner flange portion of the first closure strip including the at least one closure profile, the inner flange portion of the first closure strip having a length less than a length of the outer flange portion of the first closure strip, the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip being located between an open end of the inner flange portion of the first closure portion and the bending point; and

a second closure strip comprising at least one closure profile and a flange, the flange of the second closure strip consisting of a generally straight portion, the flange of the second closure strip including an inner surface and an outer surface, the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip extending from the inner surface of the second closure strip,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip are configured to interlock with each other,

wherein the outer flange portion of the first closure strip and the flange of the second closure strip are configured to be attached to a respective one of the opposing body panels,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip are configured to be unlocked by grasping and moving the flange of the second closure strip and the inner flange portion of the first closure strip from each other,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip are not configured to be opened by grasping and pulling the outer flange portion of the first closure strip outwardly and pulling the flange of the second closure strip outwardly.

9. The zipper closure according to claim 8 , wherein the length of the inner flange portion of the first closure strip is about 30 to about 80 percent of the length of the outer flange portion of the first closure strip.

10. The zipper closure according to claim 9 , wherein the length of the inner flange portion of the first closure strip is about 40 to about 60 percent of the length of the outer flange portion of the first closure strip.

11. The zipper closure according to claim 8 , wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip is a plurality of closure profiles and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip is a plurality of closure profiles.

12. The zipper closure according to claim 11 , wherein the inner flange portion of the first closure portion is bent towards the flange of the second closure strip.

13. The zipper closure according to claim 11 , wherein the inner flange portion and the outer flange portion of the first closure strip are at an angle of from about 15 to about 50 degrees with respect to each other.

The zipper closure according to claim 11 , wherein the plurality of closure profiles of the first and second closure strips includes a plurality of female closure profiles and the other one of the plurality of closure profiles of the first and second closure strips includes a plurality of male closure profiles.

15. The zipper closure according to claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of closure profiles of the first and second closure strips includes a male closure profile and a female closure profile.

16. A polymeric package comprising:

first and second opposing polymeric body panels, a bottom and an open mouth opposite of the bottom; and

a polymeric zipper closure being configured to be attached and located in the open mouth, the polymeric zipper closure comprising a first closure strip and a second closure strip, the first closure strip comprising at least one closure profile and a flange, the flange of the first closure strip including an outer flange portion and an inner flange portion, the outer flange portion of the first closure strip encompassing and being integrally connected to the inner flange portion of the first closure strip at a bending point, the inner flange portion of the first closure strip including the at least one closure profile, the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip being located between an open end of the inner flange portion of the first closure portion and the bending point, the second closure strip comprising at least one closure profile and a flange, the flange of the second closure strip consisting of a generally straight portion, the flange of the second closure strip including an inner surface and an outer surface, the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip extending from the inner surface of the second closure strip,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip are configured to interlock with each other,

wherein the outer flange portion of the first closure strip and the outer surface of the flange of the second closure strip are attached to a respective one of the first and second opposing body panels,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip in the package are configured to be unlocked by grasping and moving the flange of the second closure strip and the inner flange portion of the first closure strip from each other,

wherein the at least one closure profile of the first closure strip and the at least one closure profile of the second closure strip in the package are not configured to be opened by grasping and pulling the outer flange portion of the first closure strip outwardly and pulling the flange of the second closure strip outwardly.

17. The package of claim 16 , wherein the zipper closure is configured to be attached and located entirely in the open mouth.

18. The package of claim 16 , wherein the inner flange portion of the first closure strip has a length less than a length of the outer flange portion of the first closure strip.
