Abstract

A self-inflating stowable bed. The bed includes one or more self-inflating chambers, with each of the self-inflating chambers having one or more polyurethane foam sections therein, with the chamber defined between a first air impervious layer and a second air impervious layer. The self-inflating bed may be evacuated by a household or shop vacuum, and then sealed, rolled or folded, and easily stored or shipped. The polyurethane foam sections may be provided with different members having different indentation force deflection specifications suitable for bed portions and edge of bed portions.

Claims (22)

1. A self-inflating bed having a length L, comprising:

one or more self-inflating chambers, each of said self-inflating chambers defined between a first air impervious layer and a second air impervious layer, said first air impervious layer and said second air impervious layer each comprising a thermoplastic material having an internal side and an external side, said first air impervious layer and said second air impervious layer each comprising a material selected from a group comprising (a) woven fabric, (b) non-woven fabric, (c) knitted fabric, and (d) polyvinylchloride sheet material, or (e) flexible polymer or copolymer plastic sheet material;

a first bonding layer adhered to said internal side of said first air impervious layer, and a second bonding layer adhered to said internal side of said second air impervious layer, each of said first bonding layer and said second bonding layer comprising an extruded bonding composition having a finished thickness B of between (1) mil (0.001 inch) and four (4) mils (0.004 inches);

a number X of polyurethane foam sections N that provide a stack S of polyurethane foam sections in a series of foam sections N 1 through N x along said length L of said self-inflating bed, wherein X is a positive integer, and wherein each of said series of polyurethane foam sections N x are affixed to said first bonding layer and to said second bonding layer, and wherein said one or more polyurethane foam sections N comprise an interior portion having a twenty five percent (25%) indentation force-deflection of six (6) pounds-force to thirty (30) pounds-force as measured by ASTM standard D3574.

2. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said stack S of polyurethane foam sections has a perimeter, and extending outward from said perimeter, an edge portion, and wherein at least some of said edge portion comprises a polyurethane foam layer having a twenty five percent (25%) indentation force-deflection of thirty five (35) pounds-force to fifty (50) pounds-force, as measured by ASTM standard D3574.

3. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 2 , wherein said edge portion extends outward from said perimeter for a distance E of at least three (3) inches.

4. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 2 , wherein said edge portion extends outward from said perimeter for a distance E in a range of three (3) to five (5) inches.

5. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 2 , wherein said edge portion comprises one or more polyurethane foam portions, and wherein said one or more polyurethane foam portions has, vertically, a twenty five percent (25%) indentation force-deflection of thirty five (35) pounds-force to fifty (50) pounds-force, as measured by ASTM standard D3574.

6. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , wherein each of the polyurethane foam sections N comprise an open cell polyurethane foam.

7. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said interior portion has a twenty five percent (25%) indentation force-deflection of ten (10) pounds-force to nineteen (19) pounds-force as measured by ASTM standard D3574.

8. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 7 , wherein each of said polyurethane foam sections N in said stack S have the same 25% indentation force-deflection.

9. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 8 , wherein said interior portion comprises at least some of the polyurethane foam sections N 1 through N x which include a cutout portion defined by interior edgewall portions, said cutout portions characterized by an absence of polyurethane foam in said cutout portion.

10. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said interior portion comprises at least some sections of polyurethane foam N 1 through N x which include a cutout portion defined by interior edgewall portions, said cutout portions characterized by an absence of polyurethane foam in said cutout portion.

11. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said first bonding layer, or said second bonding layer, or both, comprises polyurethane.

12. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , wherein at least one of said one or more self-inflating chambers further comprise a vacuum valve having a vacuum connection port, said vacuum connection port sized and shaped for connection to a household vacuum device, so that said self-inflating bed is configured to be deflated by mating the household vacuum device through said vacuum valve.

13. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising an outer ticking, said outer ticking comprising an elastically stretchable fabric.

14. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 13 , wherein said outer ticking is compliant with fire retardant requirements as set forth under the United States Flammable Fabrics Act, 15 United States Code Sections 1191 through 1204.

15. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising an outer cover, said outer cover comprising an elastically stretchable fabric.

16. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 15 , wherein said outer cover is compliant with fire retardant requirements as set forth under the United States Flammable Fabrics Act, 15 United States Code Sections 1191 through 1204.

17. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said stack S of polyurethane foam sections has a perimeter, and extending outward from said perimeter, outer edge portions, and wherein at least some of said outer edge portions comprise polyurethane foam having a twenty five percent (25%) indentation force-deflection of thirty five (35) pounds-force to fifty (50) pounds-force, as measured by ASTM standard D3574.

18. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 17 , wherein said outer edge portions extend outwardly from said perimeter for a distance E of at least three (3) inches.

19. The self-inflating bed as set forth in claim 16 , wherein said outer edge portions extend outwardly from said perimeter for a distance E in a range of three (3) inches to five (5) inches.
