Abstract

An assembly includes an applicator, which includes a housing defining a gap configured to receive an end effector jaw of a surgical stapler. The applicator also includes a platform positioned within the gap. The assembly also includes a buttress assembly having a first length and positioned on the platform. The assembly further includes a trimming feature presented by the applicator or the buttress assembly, and configured to facilitate trimming of the buttress assembly from the first length to a predetermined second length.

Claims (37)

1. A method comprising:

applying a buttress assembly to an end effector jaw of a surgical stapler, wherein the buttress assembly comprises:

(i) a body including a proximal portion and a distal portion,

(ii) at least one guide, wherein the at least one guide delineates the proximal and distal portions, and

(iii) an adhesive, wherein the adhesive is disposed on both the proximal and distal portions; and

separating the distal portion from the proximal portion, wherein separating the distal portion from the proximal portion includes cutting the buttress assembly along a cutting line defined by the at least one guide, wherein cutting the buttress assembly is performed via at least one blade.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein separating the distal portion from the proximal portion is performed after applying the buttress assembly to the end effector jaw.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one blade is presented by scissors.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one guide includes at least one notch extending partially through the body.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one guide includes a laterally-opposed pair of guides.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the buttress assembly to the end effector jaw includes adhering at least the proximal portion to the end effector jaw via the adhesive.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the buttress assembly to the end effector jaw is performed via a buttress applicator.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the end effector jaw includes an anvil.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the end effector jaw includes a stapling assembly.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising clamping tissue via the end effector jaw such that the proximal portion contacts the tissue.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising stapling tissue via the end effector jaw such that the proximal portion is pierced and captured by staples ejected into the clamped tissue.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising removing the proximal portion from the end effector jaw.

13. A method comprising:

applying a buttress assembly to an end effector jaw of a surgical stapler, wherein the buttress assembly comprises:

(i) a body including a proximal portion and a distal portion,

(ii) at least one guide, wherein the at least one guide delineates the proximal and distal portions, and

(iii) an adhesive, wherein the adhesive is disposed on both the proximal and distal portions; and

separating the distal portion from the proximal portion, wherein separating the distal portion from the proximal portion is performed before applying the buttress assembly to the end effector jaw.

14. A method comprising:

applying a buttress assembly to an end effector jaw of a surgical stapler, wherein the buttress assembly comprises:

(i) a body including a proximal portion and a distal portion,

(ii) at least one guide, wherein the at least one guide defines a cutting line delineating the proximal and distal portions, and

(iii) an adhesive, wherein the adhesive is disposed on both the proximal and distal portions; and

after applying the buttress assembly to the end effector jaw, cutting the buttress assembly along the cutting line to thereby sever the distal portion from the proximal portion, wherein cutting the buttress assembly is performed via at least one blade.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one guide includes at least one notch extending partially through the body.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one guide includes a laterally-opposed pair of guides.

17. A method of using a buttress assembly, the buttress assembly comprising (i) a body including a proximal portion and a distal portion and (ii) an adhesive disposed on both the proximal and distal portions, the method comprising:

adhering at least the proximal portion to an end effector jaw of a surgical stapler via the adhesive; and

cutting the buttress assembly along a cutting line defined by at least one guide of the buttress assembly, the cutting line delineating the proximal and distal portions, to thereby sever the distal portion from the proximal portion, wherein cutting the buttress assembly is performed via at least one blade.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein cutting the buttress assembly along the cutting line is performed after adhering at least the proximal portion to the end effector jaw.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein cutting the buttress assembly along the cutting line is performed before adhering at least the proximal portion to the end effector jaw.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the at least one guide includes at least one notch extending partially through the body.
