Abstract

A cervical collar has a front component formed from a compressible foam material and defines a recess constituting part of a tracheal opening. The collar also has a height adjustment mechanism secured to the front component which forms a substantially rigid border about the tracheal opening, and a sternum pad formed from a compressible foam material. The height adjustment mechanism selectively connects the front component to the sternum pad at a permanently locked position among a plurality of predefined distances.

Claims (30)

1. A cervical collar having an adjustable height, comprising:

a front component;

a rear component connecting to the front component, the rear component having a plurality of breakaway sections arranged to be removed without benefit of a tool, wherein removal of one of the plurality of breakaway sections reduces a circumference of the cervical collar formed by the front and rear components, the rear component defining inner and outer sides;

wherein the rear component defines a least one notch at a location along a predetermined circumferential length of the rear component, the at least one notch demarcating a breakaway section from a remainder of the rear component for reducing an overall circumferential length of the rear component;

wherein the front and rear components are formed from a compressible foam, and the rear component connects to the front component;

wherein the at least one notch extends along an entirety of a height defined between an upper periphery and a lower periphery of a first side end portion and along one of the inner and outer sides of the rear component corresponding at the same predetermined circumferential length of the rear component, wherein the rear component defines a second thickness at the at least one notch that is less than a first thickness of the rear component at portions of the rear component adjacent to the at least one notch at the plurality of breakaway sections;

wherein the at least one notch is defined by opposite first and second surfaces extending into and from the first thickness at the plurality of breakaway sections and intersecting with each other at a segment where the second thickness is defined, the opposite first and second surfaces extend continuously from and between the upper periphery and the lower periphery along said height at the location of the predetermined circumferential length of the rear component.

The cervical collar of claim 1 , wherein the at least one notch comprises first and second sets of notches located at first and second locations, respectively, along the upper and lower peripheries of the first side end portion, respectively, wherein a segment of the rear component is between the first and second sets of notches defining the breakaway section.

The cervical collar of claim 1 , wherein the rear component defines a second end portion located at an opposite circumferential end of the rear component from the first end portion, the second end portion defining at least one notch demarcating a breakaway section from a remainder of the rear component at the second end portion.

The cervical collar of claim 3 , wherein the at least one notch at the first end portion comprises first and second sets of notches located at first and second locations, respectively, along the upper and lower peripheries of the first end portion, respectively, wherein a segment of the rear component between the first and second sets of notches at the first end portion defines the breakaway section.

The cervical collar of claim 1 , further comprising a reinforcement support secured along a midline of the rear component, the reinforcement support defining a middle section, an uppermost section, and a lowermost section, the middle section and the lowermost section being mounted flush to the rear component.

6. The cervical collar of claim 5 , wherein the uppermost section protrudes outwardly from the rear component and forms a gap therewith.

7. The cervical collar of claim 5 , wherein the reinforcement support forms at least one slot perpendicular to the circumferential length of the rear component and is located in the middle section of the reinforcement support below the uppermost section.

8. The cervical collar of claim 7 , further comprises at least one strap secured to the front component and extending through the at least one slot.

9. The cervical collar of claim 5 , wherein the reinforcement support forms a cervical arch corresponding to a cervical arch formed along with the height of the rear component at least at the midline.

10. The cervical collar of claim 5 , wherein the reinforcement support is secured to the rear component by first and second fasteners located at the lowermost section and the middle section along the midline of the rear component.

11. The cervical collar of claim 1 , wherein the rear component forms a plurality of openings extending through the first thickness of the rear component within the plurality of breakaway sections.

12. A cervical collar having an adjustable height, comprising:

a front component;

a rear component connecting to the front component, the rear component having breakaway sections arranged to be removed without benefit of a tool, wherein removal of one of the breakaway sections reduces a circumference of the cervical collar formed by the front and rear components, the rear component defining inner and outer sides;

a reinforcement support secured along a midline of the rear component, the reinforcement support defining a middle section, an uppermost section, and a lowermost section, the middle section and the lowermost section being mounted flush to the rear component, wherein the reinforcement support forms at least one slot perpendicular to the circumferential length of the rear component and located at the middle section of the reinforcement support below the uppermost section;

at least one strap secured to the front component and extending through the at least one slot;

wherein the rear component defines a least one notch at a location along a predetermined circumferential length of the rear component, the at least one notch demarcating one of said breakaway sections from a remainder of the rear component for reducing an overall circumferential length of the rear component;

wherein the at least one notch defines first and second notches extending along an entirety of a height defined between an upper periphery and a lower periphery of a first side end portion and along the inner and outer sides, respectively, of the rear component corresponding at the same predetermined circumferential length of the rear component, wherein the rear component defines a second thickness at the at least one notch that is less than a first thickness of the rear component at portions of the rear component adjacent to the at least one notch at the breakaway sections;

wherein the at least one notch is defined by opposite first and second surfaces extending into and from the first thickness at the breakaway sections and intersecting with each other at a segment where the second thickness is defined, the opposite first and second surfaces extend continuously from and between the upper periphery and the lower periphery along said height at the location of the predetermined circumferential length of the rear component.

13. The cervical collar of claim 12 , wherein the uppermost section protrudes outwardly from the rear component and forms a gap therewith.

14. The cervical collar of claim 12 , wherein the reinforcement support forms a cervical arch corresponding to a cervical arch formed along a height of the rear component at least at the midline.

15. The cervical collar of claim 12 , wherein the reinforcement support is secured to the rear component by first and second fasteners located at the lowermost section and the middle section along the midline of the rear component.

16. The cervical collar of claim 1 , wherein the first and second opposite surfaces slant toward one another such that an intermediate tapering thickness is defined between the first thickness and the second thickness.

17. The cervical collar of claim 12 , wherein the first and second opposite surfaces slant toward one another such that an intermediate tapering thickness is defined between the first thickness and the second thickness.
