Abstract

A box can include a first side panel; a second side panel positioned perpendicular to the first side panel; a top panel joined to the first side panel; and a handle assembly, the handle assembly including: a handle portion attached the top panel, the handle portion including a tab at a side end of the handle portion, and a locking panel attached to the second side panel, the locking panel defining a cut pattern, the cut pattern including a first side cut and a second side cut, a flap defined between the first side cut and the second side cut, the first side cut diverging into an inner cut extending along a bottom of the flap and an outer cut defining a space below the bottom of the flap, a portion of the second side cut extending along the bottom of the flap.

Claims (42)

1. A box comprising:

a first side panel;

a second side panel positioned perpendicular to the first side panel;

a top panel comprising a securing cut and coupled to the first side panel; and

a handle assembly configurable between an upright configuration and a folded-down configuration, the handle assembly comprising:

a handle portion coupled to the top panel and comprising a side end defining a tab, and

a locking panel wherein:

in the upright configuration, a cut pattern of the locking panel engages the handle portion, and the second side panel is positioned perpendicular to the handle portion; and

in the folded-down configuration, a corner of the locking panel is inserted into the securing cut of the top panel.

2. The box of claim 1 , wherein the handle portion of the handle assembly further comprises a handle notch, wherein in the folded-down configuration, the locking panel holds down the handle portion in a substantially flat configuration, and in the upright configuration, the handle notch is received by the locking panel and the handle assembly is raised to carry the box.

3. The box of claim 1 , wherein in the folded-down configuration, the top panel and the handle assembly define a substantially planar upper surface of the box.

4. The box of claim 1 , wherein the top panel comprises two securing cuts for two corners of the locking panel to secure the handle assembly in the folded-down configuration.

5. The box of claim 1 , wherein in the upright configuration, the tab is received by a space within a flap folded about a fold line, the handle portion defines a handle notch adjacent to the tab, and wherein the handle notch engages a top notch defined by the fold line.

6. The box of claim 1 , wherein the securing cut in the top panel defines a perimeter defined by a fold line, a length cut disposed opposite the fold line, and two side cuts connecting the length cut and the fold line.

7. The box of claim 6 , wherein each side cut of the securing cut is curvilinear and defines a circular portion, and the length cut forms a diameter of the circular portion.

8. The box of claim 6 , wherein the length cut is angled with respect to a side edge of the top panel.

9. The box of claim 6 , wherein the length cut forms a 45-degree angle with respect to a side edge of the top panel.

10. The box of claim 1 , wherein the locking panel of the handle assembly further comprises:

a flap folded about a fold line comprising a handle notch of the handle portion;

a first side cut diverging into an inner cut extending along a bottom of the flap and an outer cut defining a space below the bottom of the flap;

a second side cut, wherein a portion of the second side cut extends along the bottom of the flap, wherein the fold line is defined between the first side cut and the second side cut; and

a bottom notch defined by the cut pattern between the outer cut and the portion of the second side cut.

11. The box of claim 10 , wherein the tab is received by the space with the flap folded about the fold line and the handle portion defines the handle notch adjacent to the tab, and wherein in the upright configuration, the handle notch engages a top notch defined by the fold line.

12. The box of claim 10 , wherein the inner cut and the portion of the second side cut form a linear flap bottom cut.

13. The box of claim 10 , wherein the inner cut is parallel to the outer cut and the portion of the second side cut is parallel to the outer cut.

14. The box of claim 10 , wherein the cut pattern defines a vertical edge extending upwards from the bottom notch to the portion of the second side cut.

15. The box of claim 14 , wherein the vertical edge is perpendicular to the portion of the second side cut and the vertical edge is perpendicular to the inner cut.

16. The box of claim 1 , wherein the locking panel defines a handle-engaging cut pattern comprising a top hole.

17. The box of claim 16 , wherein the handle-engaging cut pattern comprises a bottom notch opposite the top hole.

18. A method of assembling a box, comprising:

folding a first side panel relative to a second side panel positioned perpendicular to the first side panel;

folding a top panel from the first side panel, the top panel comprising a securing cut; and

folding a handle assembly between an upright configuration and a folded-down configuration, wherein the handle assembly comprises

a handle portion coupled to the top panel and comprising a side end defining a tab, and

a locking panel, wherein:

in the upright configuration, a cut pattern of the locking panel engages the handle portion, and the second side panel is positioned perpendicular to the top panel; and

in the folded-down configuration, a curvilinear top corner of the locking panel is inserted into the securing cut of the top panel.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein folding the handle assembly into the folded-down configuration comprises securing the handle portion within the locking panel, and folding the handle assembly into the upright configuration comprises securing a handle notch within the locking panel and raising the handle assembly to carry the box.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein folding the handle assembly into the folded-down configuration defines a substantially planar upper surface of the box.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein folding the handle assembly into the folded-down configuration comprises securing cuts a pair of top corners of the locking panel within a pair of securing cuts to secure the locking panel of the handle assembly in the folded-down configuration.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein folding the handle assembly in the upright configuration comprises inserting the handle portion into the locking panel, and wherein folding the handle assembly in the folded-down configuration comprises inserting the locking panel into the securing cut of the top panel.

23. The method of claim 18 , wherein the handle portion defines a handle tab and a handle notch, and wherein orienting the handle portion in the upright configuration further comprises sliding the locking panel over a top edge of the handle tab to receive the handle notch.
