Abstract

Axis orientation compensation is provided in a system in which movement of a controlling device is used to control navigational functions of a target appliance by determining which one of plural sides of the controlling device is an active side of the controlling device and by causing navigational functions of the target appliance made relative to at least one of an X, Y, and Z axis of the target appliance to be dynamically aligned with movements of the controlling device made relative to at least one of an A, B, and C axis of the controlling device as a function of the one of the plural sides of the controlling device that is determined to be the active side of the controlling device.

Claims (14)

1. A non-transitory, computer-readable media having stored thereon instructions wherein the instructions, when executed by a controlled device, cause the controlled device to perform steps comprising:

determining that an orientation adjustment command was received from a controlling device; and

when it is determined that the orientation adjustment command was received from the controlling device, using the received orientation adjustment command to select a one of a plurality of alignments that align each of an A, B, and C axis of the controlling device to a respective one of an X, Y, and Z axis of the controlled device and moving a displayed object in at least one of the X, Y, and Z axes of the controlled device as a function of the selected one of the plurality of alignments in response to receiving a navigation command from the controlling device.

2. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 1 , wherein the orientation adjustment command is received with the navigation command.

3. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 1 , wherein the orientation adjustment command is received apart from the navigation command.

4. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 1 , wherein the orientation adjustment command and the navigation command are received via use of an infrared communication.

5. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 1 , wherein the orientation adjustment command and the navigation command are received via use of a radio-frequency communication.

6. A method performed by a controlled device, comprising:

determining that an orientation adjustment command was received from a controlling device; and

when it is determined that the orientation adjustment command was received from the controlling device, using the received orientation adjustment command to select a one of a plurality of alignments that align each of an A, B, and C axis of the controlling device to a respective one of an X, Y, and Z axis of the controlled device and moving a displayed object in at least one of the X, Y, and Z axes of the controlled device as a function of the selected one of the plurality of alignments in response to receiving a navigation command from the controlling device.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the orientation adjustment command is received with the navigation command.

8. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the orientation adjustment command is received apart from the navigation command.

9. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the orientation adjustment command and the navigation command are received via use of an infrared communication.

10. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the orientation adjustment command and the navigation command are received via use of a radio-frequency communication.
