Abstract

Disclosed herein are safened compositions comprising (a) a pyridine carboxylate herbicide or an agriculturally acceptable N-oxide, salt or ester thereof and (b) an azole carboxylate safener or agriculturally acceptable salt or ester thereof. Also disclosed herein are methods of controlling undesirable vegetation, comprising applying to vegetation or an area adjacent the vegetation or applying in soil or water to control the emergence or growth of vegetation (a) a pyridine carboxylate herbicide or an agriculturally acceptable N-oxide, salt or ester thereof and (b) an azole carboxylate safener or agriculturally acceptable salt or ester thereof.

Claims (33)

1. A safened composition, comprising:

(a) a pyridine carboxylate herbicide defined by Formula (I):

wherein:

R 1 is propargyl;

R 2 and R 2′ are hydrogen;

R 3 , R 3′ , R 3″ , and R 3′″ are hydrogen;

or an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof; and

(b) an azole carboxylate safener or an agriculturally acceptable salt or ester thereof,

wherein the weight ratio of the pyridine carboxylate herbicide to the azole carboxylate safener is from about 1:5 to about 5:1.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the pyridine carboxylate herbicide compound is propargyl 4-amino-3-chloro-5-fluoro-6-(7-fluoro-1H-indol-6-yl)pyridine-2-carboxylate:

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the azole carboxylate safener is selected from the group consisting of fenchlorazole, flurazole, furilazole, isoxadifen, mefenpyr, an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof, an agriculturally acceptable ester thereof, and mixtures thereof.

4. The composition of claim 3 , wherein the agriculturally acceptable ester of the azole carboxylate safener is selected from the group consisting of methyl ester, ethyl ester, diethyl ester, and combinations thereof.

The composition of claim 3 , wherein the agriculturally acceptable salt of the azole carboxylate safener is selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, ammonium, monoethanolammonium, diethanolammonium, triethanolammonium, monoisopropanolammonium, diisopropanolammonium, triisopropanolammonium, choline, N,N-dimethylethanolammonium, diethylammonium, dimethylammonium, trimethylammonium, triethylammonium, isopropylammonium, and combinations thereof.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition does not include a herbicidal active ingredient in addition to (a).

7. A method of controlling vegetation, comprising applying to vegetation or an area adjacent the vegetation or applying to soil or water to limit the emergence or growth of vegetation a safened composition, comprising:

(a) a pyridine carboxylate herbicide defined by Formula (I):

wherein

R 1 is propargyl;

R 2 and R 2′ are hydrogen;

R 3 , R 3′ , R 3″ , and R 3′″ are hydrogen;

or an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof; and

(b) an azole carboxylate safener or an agriculturally acceptable salt or ester thereof;

wherein the herbicide is applied in an amount of at least 1 g ae/ha,

wherein the azole carboxylate safener is applied in an amount of at least 1 g ai/ha, and

wherein the weight ratio of the pyridine carboxylate herbicide to the azole carboxylate safener is from about 1:5 to about 5:1.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the pyridine carboxylate herbicide compound is propargyl 4-amino-3-chloro-5-fluoro-6-(7-fluoro-1H-indol-6-yl)pyridine-2-carboxylate:

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the herbicide and the safener are applied simultaneously.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the azole carboxylate safener is selected from the group consisting of fenchlorazole, flurazole, furilazole, isoxadifen, mefenpyr, an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof, an agriculturally acceptable ester thereof, and mixtures thereof.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the agriculturally acceptable ester of the azole carboxylate safener is selected from the group consisting of methyl ester, ethyl ester, diethyl ester, and combinations thereof.

The method of claim 10 , wherein the agriculturally acceptable salt of the azole carboxylate safener is selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, ammonium, monoethanolammonium, diethanolammonium, triethanolammonium, monoisopropanolammonium, diisopropanolammonium, triisopropanolammonium, choline, N,N-dimethylethanolammonium, diethylammonium, dimethylammonium, trimethylammonium, triethylammonium, isopropylammonium, and combinations thereof.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the herbicide is provided in amount of 1 g ae/ha to 300 g ae/ha.

14. The method of claim 7 , wherein the pyridine carboxylate herbicide is applied pre-emergently or post-emergently to the vegetation and the azole carboxylate safener is applied as a seed treatment to a crop.

15. The method of claim 7 , wherein the composition does not include a herbicidal active ingredient in addition to (a).
