Abstract

Some embodiments of a portable medical device, such as an infusion pump, can receive an external reference signal (e.g., a radio, cellular and/or satellite signal) to provide an automatic time-setting and maintenance operation. In these circumstances, the medical device can maintain accurate time and date information even in the event of a power interruption, a time-zone change and/or an internal clock error, for example. In this manner, the portable medical device provides safe operation and added convenience to the user.

Claims (40)

1. A method of operating an infusion pump system for treatment of diabetes, comprising:

slidably attaching a cartridge comprising a fluid medicine to a pump device and removably coupling an exterior portion of the pump device with an exterior portion of a portable controller device, the portable controller device having a user interface display device and, when coupled with the pump device, is in electrical communication with the pump device, the pump device including a drive system configured to deliver the fluid medicine from the cartridge;

applying a cap device to the cartridge to initiate movement of a plunger and prime the cartridge;

automatically receiving without requesting, at the portable controller device, a signal indicative of a time of day;

comparing time stored in the portable controller device to time of day provided by the signal indicative of time of day;

based on a result of the comparison indicating a difference below a threshold amount between the time stored in the portable controller device and the time of day provided by the signal indicative of time of day, automatically updating an internal time setting of the portable controller device according to the signal indicative of the time of day;

adjusting a dosing rate of the fluid medicine based on the updated internal time setting; and

operating the portable controller device to actuate the drive system of the pump device based on the adjusted dosing rate of the fluid medicine.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of updating the internal time setting of the portable controller device includes receiving by internal control circuitry of the portable controller device a time-and-date update signal from an external reference source.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the external reference source is a computer configured to communicate via short range wireless communications with the portable controller device.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the external reference source is connected to a computer network having a network time protocol.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of automatically receiving the signal indicative of the time of day occurs repeatedly at predetermined intervals of time.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing data in a computer-readable memory of the portable controller device; and

time-stamping data received from a glucose sensor device based on the updated internal time setting.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interface display device of the portable controller device shows a time value indicative of the updated internal time setting.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the pump device further includes:

a pump housing to contain the drive system and to define a space for the cartridge, and a first electrical connector that is externally accessible along the pump housing; and

the portable controller device further includes:

a controller housing to mechanically mate with the pump housing,

control circuitry housed within the controller housing,

a second electrical connector that is externally accessible along the controller housing and that is engageable with the first electrical connector to provide electrical communication between the control circuitry of the portable controller device and the drive system of the pump device,

the user interface display device being electrically connected to the control circuitry, and

a wireless communication antenna system is electrically connected to the control circuitry.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portable controller device activates the drive system of the pump device according to a dispensing rate schedule based on the time of day.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising identifying a time-zone change based on the signal indicative of the time of day and shifting the dispensing rate schedule based on the time-zone change.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the dispensing rate schedule is incrementally shifted to gradually correspond to the time-zone change.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the dispensing rate schedule is step shifted to immediately correspond to the time-zone change.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

querying a user via the user interface display device to confirm whether operation of the infusion pump system should be adjusted based on the time-zone change, and wherein the dispensing rate schedule shifting based on the time-zone change is only executed in response to an input to the user interface display device.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump device comprises:

a pump housing that defines a space to slidably receive the cartridge, wherein the pump device includes at least one retainer structure within the space to slideably receive the cartridge, the at least one retainer structure configured to hinder removal of the cartridge after being received in the space and thereby prevent reuse of the pump device with a new cartridge.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump device comprises:

a pump housing including an interior cavity to define a space to slidably receive the cartridge inserted through an external opening of the pump housing, wherein the cap device is configured to mate with the pump housing and cover the external opening so as to seal the cartridge in the interior cavity.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal indicative of the time of day is automatically provided using a network time protocol (NTP) of a computer network.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal indicative of the time of day is automatically received by a wireless communication antenna system from a remote signal broadcasting source.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

configuring the pump device with a skin adhesive patch, wherein the skin adhesive patch is operable to adhere to the skin of a user.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cap device is configured to cause the plunger to engage a piston rod.
