Abstract

A method of acclimatizing a user to provide continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, including operating a device for treating sleep disordered breathing (SDB) during successive treatment sessions, wherein the device provides continuous positive airway pressure during sleep, includes determining a clinically-derived full therapeutic pressure, applying a sub-therapeutic treatment pressure for the duration of a first session, obtaining responses to a series of pre-programmed patient and/or bed partner feedback questions before the start of a second session and, based on the responses, either incrementally increasing the treatment pressure for the second session if the responses indicate that the patient is adjusting to therapy, or maintaining the treatment pressure for the second session if the responses do not indicate that the patient is adjusting to therapy.

Claims (31)

1. A method of acclimatizing a patient to provide continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, including operating a device for treating sleep disordered breathing (SDB) during successive treatment sessions, wherein said device provides continuous positive airway pressure during sleep, the method comprising:

determining a clinically-derived first therapeutic pressure;

applying a sub-therapeutic treatment pressure that is lower than the first therapeutic pressure for a duration of a first session; and

based on a patient's preference determined after the first session, applying a treatment pressure for a second session that is set using settings selected, based on the patient's preference, between a first setting and a second setting, wherein the first setting includes incrementally increasing the treatment pressure from the sub-therapeutic treatment pressure towards the first therapeutic pressure for the second session and the second setting includes proceeding directly to the first therapeutic pressure for the second session.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the treatment pressure is incrementally increased during the second session after a predetermined time period.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising a default back to applying the first therapeutic pressure to prevent patients from continuing to use the device at sub-therapeutic pressures based on detecting a predetermined condition.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to learn the patient's preference and take over incrementally increasing the treatment pressure based on the learned patient's preference.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the treatment pressure is incremented towards the first therapeutic pressure a plurality number of times during the second session.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

obtaining responses to a series of pre-programmed patient and/or bed partner feedback questions before start of a third session after the second session; and

based on the responses indicating discomfort, maintain the treatment pressure used during the second session for a plurality of sessions.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

based on detecting non-compliance during the second session using the first setting, maintaining the treatment pressure used during the second session for a plurality of sessions following the second session.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

based on detecting that the patient is not coping with the treatment pressure during the second session using the second setting, decreasing the treatment pressure to a lower level for a predetermined amount of time.

9. A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device comprising:

a blower configured to deliver pressurized air at a treatment pressure to a patient's airways via a mask configured to seal against the patient's face;

a controller in communication with the blower and configured to:

control the treatment pressure of the pressurized air to provide a sub-therapeutic treatment pressure that is lower than a first therapeutic pressure for a duration of a first session; and

based on a patient's preference determined after the first session, control the treatment pressure of the pressurized air to provide pressure for a second session that is set using settings selected, based on the patient's preference, between a first setting and a second setting, wherein the first setting includes incrementally increasing the treatment pressure from the sub-therapeutic treatment pressure towards the first therapeutic pressure for the second session and the second setting includes proceeding directly to the first therapeutic pressure for the second session.

10. The CPAP device according to claim 9 , wherein the treatment pressure is incrementally increased during the second session after a predetermined time period.

11. The CPAP device according to claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to default back to provide the first therapeutic pressure to prevent patients from continuing to use the device at sub-therapeutic pressures based on detecting a predetermined condition.

12. The CPAP device according to claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to learn the patient's preference and take over incrementally increasing the treatment pressure based on the learned patient's preference.

13. The CPAP device according to claim 9 , wherein the treatment pressure is incremented towards the first therapeutic pressure a plurality number of times during the second session.

14. The CPAP device according to claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to:

obtain responses to a series of pre-programmed patient and/or bed partner feedback questions before start of a third session after the second session; and

based on the responses indicating discomfort, maintain the treatment pressure used during the second session for a plurality of sessions.

15. The CPAP device according to claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to:

based on detecting non-compliance during the second session using the first setting, maintain the treatment pressure used during the second session for a plurality of sessions following the second session.

16. The CPAP device according to claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to:

based on detecting that the patient is not coping with the treatment pressure during the second session using the second setting, decreasing the treatment pressure to a lower level for a predetermined amount of time.
