Abstract

A glass composition having a content of SiO 2 that is greater than or equal to about 44.0 mol. % and less than or equal to about 60.0 mol. % and a content of ZnO that is less than or equal to about 1.0 mol. %. Additionally, the glass composition is essentially free of Pb and Bi. The glass composition also has a refractive index that is greater than or equal to 1.75 and a density that is less than or equal to about 4.5 g/cm 3 .

Claims (83)

1. A glass composition comprising:

greater than or equal to 35.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 60.0 mol. % SiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 20.0 mol. % TiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 15.0 mol. % Na 2 O;

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 10.0 mol. % Bi 2 O 3 ;

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 6.5 mol. % ZrO 2 ;

eater than or equal to 0.005 mol. % and less than or equal to 1.0 mol % Fe 2 O 3 ,

0.0 mol. % Li 2 O, and

0.0 mol. % B 2 O 3 ,

wherein:

a sum of Li 2 O+Na 2 O+K 2 O is greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. %,

a sum of MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO is greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 15.5 mol. %,

the glass composition is substantially free of PbO, and

the following conditions are satisfied:

P 1 >1.7, and

P 1 −2.21+0.0086×SiO 2 >0.00, wherein SiO 2 is in mol %,

P 1 is a predicted value of refractive index at 587.6 nm calculated from formula (I):

P 1 =1.66040−0.0019575×SiO 2 −0.0012005×B 2 O 3 +0.0097681×La 2 O 3 +0.0049583×TiO 2 +0.0016595×ZnO+0.0045141×ZrO 2 +0.0016435×CaO+0.011459×Nb 2 O 5 +0.002465×BaO+0.0045473×WO 3 +0.0088971×Gd 2 O 3 +0.0079032×Y 2 O 3 +0.010713×Ta 2 O 5 +0.00011409×Li 2 O−0.002614×Al 2 O 3 −0.00068328×Na 2 O−0.00037904×GeO 2 +0.0031546×SrO+0.014493×Bi 2 O 3 +0.0087809×Yb 2 O 3 −0.00096658×K 2 O+0.006201×PbO  (I),

wherein each component in formula (I) is expressed as mol. %.

2. The glass composition of claim 1 , further comprising:

greater than or equal to 45.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 60.0 mol. % SiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 19.5 mol. % TiO 2 ; and

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 20.0 mol. % Nb 2 O 5 ,

wherein a sum of R 2 O+RO is greater than or equal to 2.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 40.0 mol. %, R 2 O being a total sum of monovalent metal oxides and RO being a total sum of divalent metal oxides in the glass composition.

3. The glass composition of claim 1 , further comprising:

greater than or equal to 45.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 57.0 mol. % SiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 16.0 mol. % La 2 O 3 ; and

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 5.0 mol. % Bi 2 O 3 ,

wherein:

a sum of MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO+ZnO is greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 30.0 mol. %,

a sum of Li 2 O+Na 2 O+K 2 O is greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 20.0 mol. %, and

the glass composition is substantially free of PbO.

4. The glass composition of claim 1 , further comprising:

less than or equal to 54.0 mol. % SiO 2 ; and

less than or equal to 23.0 mol. % Nb 2 O 5 ,

wherein:

a sum of Li 2 O+Na 2 O+K 2 O is greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 20.0 mol. %,

a sum of MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO is greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 15.5 mol. %, and

a sum of Li 2 O+Na 2 O+K 2 O+MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO is greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 33.0 mol. %.

5. The glass composition of claim 1 , further comprising:

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 1.0 mol. % P 2 O 5 .

6. The glass composition of claim 1 , further comprising greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 5.0 mol. % Ta 2 O 5 .

7. A glass composition comprising:

greater than or equal to 45.0 mol. % SiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 19.5 mol. % TiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 0.005 mol % and less than or equal to 1.0 mol % Fe 2 O 3 ;

0.0 mol. % Li 2 O;

0.0 mol. % B 2 O 3 ;

greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 20.0 mol. % R 2 O, R 2 O being a total sum of monovalent metal oxides; and

greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % RO, RO being a total sum of divalent metal oxides,

wherein the following condition is satisfied:

P 1 −1.42-0.1×P 2 >0.00,

P 1 is a predicted value of refractive index at 587.6 nm calculated from formula (I):

P 1 =1.66040−0.0019575×SiO 2 −0.0012005×B 2 O 3 +0.0097681×La 2 O 3 +0.0049583×TiO 2 +0.0016595×ZnO+0.0045141×ZrO 2 +0.0016435×CaO+0.011459×Nb 2 O 5 +0.002465×BaO+0.0045473×WO 3 +0.0088971×Gd 2 O 3 +0.0079032×Y 2 O 3 +0.010713×Ta 2 O 5 +0.00011409×Li 2 O−0.002614×Al 2 O 3 −0.00068328×Na 2 O−0.00037904×GeO 2 +0.0031546×SrO+0.014493×Bi 2 O 3 +0.0087809×Yb 2 O 3 −0.00096658×K 2 O+0.006201×PbO  (I),

8. The glass composition of claim 7 , further comprising:

greater than or equal to 45.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 60.0 mol. % SiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 20.0 mol. % Nb 2 O 5 ; and

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 10.0 mol. % Bi 2 O 3 ,

wherein a sum of R 2 O+RO is greater than or equal to 2.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 40.0 mol. %.

9. The glass composition of claim 7 , further comprising:

greater than or equal to 45.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 57.0 mol. % SiO 2 ;

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 16.0 mol. % La 2 O 3 ;

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 6.5 mol. % ZrO 2 ; and

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 5.0 mol. % Bi 2 O 3 ,

wherein:

a sum of MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO+ZnO is greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 30.0 mol. %, and

the glass composition is substantially free of PbO.

10. The glass composition of claim 7 , further comprising:

less than or equal to 54.0 mol. % SiO 2 ;

less than or equal to 23.0 mol. % Nb 2 O 5 ; and

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 6.5 mol. % ZrO 2 ,

wherein:

a sum of MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO is greater than or equal to 1.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 15.5 mol. %, and

a sum of Li 2 O+Na 2 O+K 2 O+MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO is greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 33.0 mol. %.

11. The glass composition of claim 7 , further comprising:

greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 1.0 mol. % P 2 O 5 .

12. The glass composition of claim 7 , further comprising greater than or equal to 0.0 mol. % and less than or equal to 5.0 mol. % Ta 2 O 5 .

13. The glass composition of claim 7 , wherein P 1 >1.7.

14. The glass composition of claim 7 , wherein the following condition is satisfied:

P 1 −2.21+0.0086× SiO 2 >0.00, wherein SiO 2 is in mol %.
