Abstract

An example method to facilitate online collaboration includes granting access to an editable collaboration space to multiple users. The method also includes dividing the users into subgroups including at least a first subgroup and a second subgroup. In addition, the method includes assigning the subgroups to different virtual breakout rooms in the editable collaboration space, including assigning users in the first subgroup to a first virtual breakout room and assigning users in the second subgroup to a second virtual breakout room that is different than the first virtual breakout room. Further, the method includes populating each virtual breakout room with common initial content obtained from a virtual common room, the common initial content being the same in each virtual breakout room.

Claims (36)

1. A method to facilitate online collaboration, the method comprising:

granting access to an editable collaboration space to multiple users;

dividing the users into subgroups including at least a first subgroup and a second subgroup;

assigning the subgroups to different virtual breakout rooms in the editable collaboration space, including assigning users in the first subgroup to a first virtual breakout room and assigning users in the second subgroup to a second virtual breakout room that is different than the first virtual breakout room, wherein each of the virtual breakout rooms comprises a corresponding pre-defined area for content to be brought to a virtual common room in the editable collaboration space;

adding common initial content obtained from the virtual common room in the editable collaboration space to each virtual breakout room, the added common initial content being the same in each virtual breakout room, wherein the virtual common room comprises an area in the editable collaboration space in which content is accessible to all users;

removing the users from the subgroups to reform the users as a single group; and

responsive to removing the users from the subgroups, adding content located within a pre-defined area in a virtual breakout room to the virtual common room.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein assigning the subgroups to different virtual breakout rooms comprises assigning each subgroup to a different area in the editable collaboration space.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, for each user, confining the user to a corresponding virtual breakout room to which the user's subgroup is assigned.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, for each user, obscuring all virtual breakout rooms in the editable collaboration space apart from the virtual breakout room to which the user is assigned.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

at a first time prior to the obscuring, receiving from a facilitator or one of the users, input that is effective to initiate, for each user, the obscuring;

at a second time that is subsequent to the first time, receiving from the facilitator or one of the users, input that is effective to terminate, for each user, the obscuring; and

terminating the obscuring such that all virtual breakout rooms in the editable collaboration space are unobscured for all the users.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising compiling statistics for each of the virtual breakout rooms.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the statistics for each of the virtual breakout rooms include at least one of: a number of graphical objects in the virtual breakout room or a number of each type of graphical object in the virtual breakout room.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising limiting applicability of a feature initiated within each of the virtual breakout rooms to users within the corresponding virtual breakout room.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the feature initiated within each of the virtual breakout rooms comprises at least one of: a visual attribute, a breakout room, or voting.

10. A method to facilitate online collaboration, the method comprising:

granting access to an editable collaboration space to multiple users;

dividing the users into subgroups including at least a first subgroup and a second subgroup;

assigning the subgroups to different virtual breakout rooms in the editable collaboration space, including assigning users in the first subgroup to a first virtual breakout room and assigning users in the second subgroup to a second virtual breakout room that is different than the first virtual breakout room, each of the virtual breakout rooms comprising a corresponding pre-defined area for content to be brought to a virtual common room in the editable collaboration space;

receiving input from a facilitator or one of the users that is effective to select content from the virtual common room; and

duplicating the selected content from the virtual common room into each of the virtual breakout rooms as common initial content;

removing the users from the subgroups to reform the users as a single group; and

responsive to removing the users from the subgroups, adding content located within a pre-defined area in a virtual breakout room to the virtual common room.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising limiting applicability of a feature initiated within each of the virtual breakout rooms to users within the corresponding virtual breakout room.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the feature initiated within each of the virtual breakout rooms comprises at least one of: a visual attribute, a breakout room, or voting.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first virtual breakout room corresponds to a first page within the editable collaboration space;

the second virtual breakout room corresponds to a second page within the editable collaboration space and the second page is different than the first page; and

the virtual common room corresponds to a third page within the editable collaboration space and the third page is different than the first page and the second page.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first virtual breakout room is accessible via a first tab located in the editable collaboration space;

the second virtual breakout room is accessible via a second tab located in the editable collaboration space; and

the virtual common room is accessible via a third tab located in the editable collaboration space.
