Abstract

An implant comprises a unitary body including an intramedullary portion connected to an extramedullary portion. The unitary body is configured to attach a first bone section to a second bone section. The intramedullary portion has a first longitudinal axis, and is configured for insertion into the first bone section. The intramedullary portion includes at least one first fastener aperture having an aperture axis oriented obliquely relative to the first longitudinal axis. The extramedullary portion is configured to abut a surface of the second bone section and includes at least one second fastener aperture disposed to transversely receive a bone fastener inserted in the second bone section. The extramedullary portion has a second longitudinal axis offset from, the first longitudinal axis.

Claims (40)

1. A system, comprising:

an implant having a unitary body, the implant including:

an intramedullary portion sized and configured to be received within a first bone portion, the intramedullary portion defining at least one first aperture having an aperture axis that is disposed at an oblique angle with respect to a longitudinal axis defined by the intramedullary portion, the at least one first aperture sized and configured to receive a first fastener for securing the intramedullary portion to the first bone portion; and

an extramedullary portion configured to abut a surface of a second bone portion, the extramedullary portion defining a plurality of second apertures, at least one second aperture of the plurality of second apertures sized and configured to receive a second fastener for securing the extramedullary portion to the second bone portion, and

a targeting guide having a body configured to engage the implant, the body defining a third aperture and a fourth aperture, the third aperture defining an axis that is disposed at an angle with respect to an axis defined by the fourth aperture,

wherein the targeting guide is configured to engage a wire for rotating the second bone portion about a longitudinal axis of the second bone portion when the intramedullary portion of the implant is disposed within the first bone portion.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the intramedullary portion includes a tapered first end for insertion of the intramedullary portion of the implant into the first bone portion.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the extramedullary portion includes a curvature configured to abut the surface of the second bone portion.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least two second apertures of the plurality of second apertures are offset from the longitudinal axis defined by the intramedullary portion.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the axis defined by the third aperture is configured to be aligned with an axis defined by at least one second aperture of the plurality of second apertures defined by the extramedullary portion of the implant.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the axis defined by the fourth aperture is configured to be aligned with an axis of the at least one first aperture defined by the intramedullary portion of the implant when the targeting guide is coupled to the implant.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one second aperture of the plurality of second apertures that is aligned with the third aperture is sized and configured to receive a threaded fastener.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the targeting guide is configured to be coupled to the implant by a threaded coupling.

9. A system, comprising:

an implant including:

an intramedullary portion sized and configured to be received within a first bone portion, the intramedullary portion defining a first aperture having a first aperture axis that is disposed at an angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the intramedullary portion, the first aperture sized and configured to receive a first fastener for securing the intramedullary portion to the first bone portion; and

an extramedullary portion having a curved surface configured to abut a surface of a second bone portion, the extramedullary portion defining a second aperture; and

a targeting guide configured to be used to implant the implant, the targeting guide including:

a first portion configured to engage the implant; and

a second portion coupled to the first portion of the targeting guide, the second portion of the targeting guide defining a third aperture that is configured to be aligned with the first aperture defined by the intramedullary portion of the implant when the targeting guide is coupled to the implant,

wherein the targeting guide is configured to engage and apply a force to a wire driven into the second bone portion to rotate the second bone portion about a longitudinal axis of the second bone portion when the intramedullary portion of the implant is disposed within the first bone portion.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the extramedullary portion defines a fourth aperture, the fourth aperture sized and configured to receive a threaded fastener for attaching the extramedullary portion of the implant to the second bone portion.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the fourth aperture is offset from the longitudinal axis defined by the intramedullary portion of the implant.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the intramedullary portion includes a tapered first end sized and configured for inserting the intramedullary portion of the implant into the first bone portion.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the third aperture is sized and configured to receive a drill therein.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the targeting guide is pre-packaged with the implant in an assembled state in which the threads of the targeting guide engage the implant.

15. A system for correcting deformities in a human foot, comprising:

an implant having a unitary body extending from a first end to a second end, the implant including:

an intramedullary portion tapering toward the first end and being sized and configured to be received within a first bone portion, the intramedullary portion defining a first aperture having a first aperture axis that is disposed at an angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the intramedullary portion, the first aperture sized and configured to receive a first fastener for securing the intramedullary portion to the first bone portion; and

an extramedullary portion extending away from the intramedullary portion and terminating at the second end of the implant, the extramedullary portion having a curved surface configured to abut a surface of a second bone portion, the extramedullary portion defining a second aperture; and

a targeting guide for use in implanting the implant, the targeting guide including:

a first portion configured to engage the extramedullary portion of the implant during implantation of the implant; and

a second portion coupled to the first portion of the targeting guide, the second portion of the targeting guide defining a third aperture that is configured to be aligned with the first aperture defined by the intramedullary portion of the implant when the targeting guide is coupled to the implant,

wherein the targeting guide is configured to apply a force to a wire driven into the second bone portion for guiding rotation of the second bone portion about a longitudinal axis of the second bone portion when the intramedullary portion of the implant is disposed within the first bone portion.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the extramedullary portion of the implant defines a fourth aperture.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the targeting guide includes threads configured to engage the implant.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the targeting guide is pre-packaged with the implant in an assembled state in which the threads of the targeting guide engage the implant.
