Abstract

A patient support apparatus, such as a hospital bed, communicates with an electronic medical record (EMR) system in healthcare facility. The hospital bed includes a patient support structure to support a patient, a graphical user interface coupled to the patient support structure, and control circuitry coupled to the graphical user interface. The graphical user interface displays at least one input that may be used by a caregiver to chart data into an electronic medical record (EMR) of a patient supported by the patient support structure.

Claims (28)

1. A hospital bed comprising:

a base frame,

a set of casters coupled to the base frame,

an upper frame assembly including a patient support deck having a plurality of movable deck sections, the movable deck sections being movable to change a position at which a patient is supported by the patient support deck,

a plurality of motors operable to move at least some of the movable deck sections,

a lift system operable to raise, lower, and tilt the upper frame assembly relative to the base frame,

a set of barriers coupled to the upper frame assembly, at least some of the barriers being movable relative to the upper frame assembly between a raised position and a lowered position,

control circuitry carried by at least one of the base frame and the upper frame assembly, and

a graphical user interface (GUI) coupled to the control circuitry, the control circuitry being configured to command the GUI to display a patient association screen having at least one user input for selecting a patient to be associated with the hospital bed, the control circuitry further being configured to command the GUI to display a list of likely patients for possible association with the hospital bed from which the patient to be associated is selected to make a patient-to-bed association, wherein the list of likely patients is based on patient weight.

2. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the GUI is configured to permit a user to confirm that a patient-to-bed association made at a remote computer is correct.

3. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the list of likely patients is received by the control circuitry from an admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT) system.

4. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the list of likely patients is filterable.

5. The hospital bed of claim 4 , wherein filtering of the of the list of likely patients is done based on a weight of the patient as measured by a weigh scale system of the hospital bed.

6. The hospital bed of claim 4 , wherein filtering of the list of likely patients is further done based on a male/female selection being made on the GUI or a race selection being made on the GUI, or both.

7. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to command the GUI to display a look-up table that permits the user to set or confirm a doctor-to-patient association.

8. The hospital bed of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to command the GUI to display messages at preset times to prompt the user to confirm or edit the doctor-to-patient association.

9. The hospital bed of claim 8 , wherein the preset times correspond to caregiver shift changes.

10. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to command the GUI to display a look-up table that permits the user to set or confirm a caregiver-to-patient association.

11. The hospital bed of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to command the GUI to display messages at preset times to prompt the user to confirm or edit the caregiver-to-patient association.

12. The hospital bed of claim 11 , wherein the preset times correspond to caregiver shift changes.

13. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to command the GUI to display a look-up table that permits the user to set or confirm a bed-to-room association.

14. The hospital bed of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to command the GUI to display messages at preset times to prompt the user to confirm or edit the bed-to-room association.

15. The hospital bed of claim 14 , wherein the preset times correspond to caregiver shift changes.

16. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to command the GUI to display messages at preset times to prompt the user to confirm or edit the patient-to-bed association.

17. The hospital bed of claim 16 , wherein the preset times correspond to caregiver shift changes.

18. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein a bed-to-room association is made in response to a user typing a room number on the GUI.

19. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein if the hospital bed becomes unplugged and then is plugged back in after a threshold amount of time, the control circuitry is configured to display a message on the GUI to prompt the user to confirm or edit the patient-to-bed association.

20. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein if the hospital bed becomes unplugged and then is plugged back in after a threshold amount of time, the control circuitry is configured to display a message on the GUI to prompt the user to confirm or edit other associations including one or more of the following: a doctor-to-patient association, a caregiver-to-patient association, or a bed-to-room association.
