Abstract

Systems and methods for enrolling and authenticating a user in an authentication system via a user's camera of camera equipped mobile device include capturing and storing enrollment biometric information from at least one first image of the user taken via the camera of the mobile device, capturing authentication biometric information from at least one second image of the user, capturing, during imaging of the at least one second image, path parameters via at least one movement detecting sensor indicating an authentication movement of the mobile device, comparing the authentication biometric information to the stored enrollment biometric information, and comparing the authentication movement of the mobile device to an expected movement of the mobile device to determine whether the authentication movement sufficiently corresponds to the expected movement.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the first data and the second data comprise biometric data.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the first data and the second data comprise a mapping of facial features.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the person's head and facial features are held steady and without movement during capture of the first image and the second image.

9. A method for evaluating one or more characteristics of a person's face with a computing device, the method comprising:

displaying a first face-framing prompt on a screen of the computing device;

when the person's face is framed in the first face-framing prompt, capturing at least one first image of the person taken with a camera at a first location which is a first distance from the person, the camera associated with the computing device;

processing the at least one first image or a portion thereof to create first data;

displaying a second face-framing prompt, that is different in size than the first face-framing prompt, on the screen of the computing device;

when the person's face is framed in the second face-framing prompt, capturing at least one second image of the person taken with the camera associated with the computing device when the camera is a second distance from the person, the second distance different than the first distance, such that the camera at the second distance due to:

movement of the camera;

movement of the person; or

a combination of both;

processing the at least one second image or a portion thereof to create second data; and

processing the first data, the second data, or both to evaluate one or more characteristics of the person's face, and determine if the camera captured images of a live person.

10. The according to claim 9 , further comprising:

interpolating the first data and the second data to obtain estimated intermediate data;

capturing at least one third image of the person taken with the camera of the at a third distance from the person, the third distance being between the first distance and the second distance;

processing the at least one third image or a portion thereof to obtain third data; and

comparing the estimated intermediate data with the third data to determine whether the third data matches the estimated intermediate data.

11. The according to claim 9 , wherein the face-framing prompts are an oval shaped guide on the screen within which the face of the person is aligned to capture the at least one first image and the at least one second image.

12. The according to claim 9 , wherein the computing device is a hand-held device, and the person holds the hand-held device at the first distance when capturing at least one first image and at the second distance when capturing the at least one second image such that during capture of the at least one first image and the at least one second image the camera is pointed generally directly at the person's face.

13. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the first data and the second data comprise biometric data.

14. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the first data and the second data comprise a mapping of facial features.

15. The according to claim 9 , further comprising illuminating a screen of the computing device with a randomized color sequence while capturing the at least one first image and/or the at least one second image, and processing the at least one first image and/or the at least one second image to detect a reflection of the illumination from the person's face.

16. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the person's face is held steady when capturing the at least one first image and the at least one second image and the camera moves from the first location to the second location.

17. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the first data and the second data are maintained on the computing device and the method occurs on the computing device.

18. The method of claim 9 wherein the computing device is one of a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.

19. A method for capturing images of a face of the user to evaluate the user, the method comprising:

displaying a first face-framing prompt on a screen associated with the computing device;

responsive to the user positioning their face within the first face-framing prompt, capturing a first image of the user's face with a camera at a first distance from the user's face, the camera associated with the computing device;

displaying a second face-framing prompt on a screen associated with the computing device, wherein the second face-framing prompt differs from the first face-framing prompt;

responsive to the user positioning their face with the second face-framing prompt, capturing a second image of the user's face with the camera when, due to the user positioning their face with the second face-framing prompt, the camera is at the second distance from the user's face, the second distance being different than the first distance;
