Abstract

An augmented reality (AR) display device includes a camera that captures a background image; a distance measuring sensor that measures a distance to a real object in the background image; a position and orientation sensor that detects the position of the camera and the shooting direction of the camera; a controller that recognizes the real object from the background image captured by the camera and associates the predetermined AR object with the recognized real object; a display displaying an image of the associated AR object; and a memory that stores data of the real object and the AR object associated with each other. The controller determines whether or not the real object is movable from the measurement result of the distance measuring sensor, and arranges the AR object according to the current position of the real object when the position of the real object associated with the AR object moves.

Claims (81)

1. An augmented reality display device comprising:

a camera configured to capture a background image;

a distance sensor configured to measure a distance to a real object in the background image captured by the camera;

a display configured to display an image;

extract a contour of the real object,

determine an area for placing the AR object within the contour of the real object,

display the area for placing the AR object,

receive a selection operation indicating a location for placing the AR object within the area for placing the AR object,

determine a first side of the AR object,

determine a first side of the real object,

associate the AR object with the real object, wherein the first side of the virtual object abuts the first side of the real object,

display the AR object at the location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on a shooting direction of the camera,

calculate a new shooting direction of the camera, and

display the AR object at the location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on the new shooting direction of the camera.

2. The augmented display device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

receive a second selection operation indicating a new location for placing the AR object; and

display the AR object at the new location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on the shooting direction of the camera.

3. The augmented display device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

receive a second selection operation for rotating the AR object; and

display the rotated AR object at the location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on the shooting direction of the camera.

4. The augmented display device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

determine a hidden portion of the AR object based on the distance to the real object and the shooting direction of the camera; and

mask the hidden portion of the virtual object when displaying the AR object.

5. The augmented display device of claim 1 , wherein the real object is a table, and wherein the controller is configured to, where the first side of the virtual object abutting the first side of the real object, further include displaying the AR object on top of the real object.

6. The augmented display device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to, in the display of the AR object, further include displaying appearance of the AR object in a room along with additional real objects in the room.

7. An augmented reality display device comprising:

a camera configured to capture a background image;

a distance sensor configured to measure a distance to a real object in the background image captured by the camera;

a display configured to display an image;

a memory configured to store data of the real object and of the AR object;

a controller configured to:

determine an area for placing the AR object within a contour of the real object,

display the area for placing the AR object,

receive a selection operation indicating a location for placing the AR object within the area for placing the AR object,

determine a first side of the AR object,

determine a first side of the real object,

associate the AR object with the real object, wherein the first side of the virtual object abuts the first side of the real object, and

display the AR object at the location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on a shooting direction of the camera.

8. The augmented reality display device of claim 7 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

calculate a position and a new shooting direction of the camera; and

display the AR object at the location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on the new shooting direction of the camera.

9. The augmented display device of claim 8 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

receive a second selection operation indicating a new location for placing the AR object; and

display the AR object at the new location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on the shooting direction of the camera.

10. The augmented display device of claim 8 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

receive a second selection operation for rotating the AR object; and

display the rotated AR object at the location for placing the AR object superimposed on top of the real object in the background image based on the shooting direction of the camera.

11. The augmented display device of claim 7 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

determine a hidden portion of the AR object based on the distance to the real object and the shooting direction of the camera; and

mask the hidden portion of the AR object when displaying the AR object.

12. The augmented display device of claim 7 , wherein the real object is a table, and wherein the controller is configured to, where the first side of the AR object abuts the first side of the real object further include displaying the AR object on top of the real object.

13. The augmented display device of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to, in the display of the AR object, further include displaying appearance of the AR object in a room along with additional real objects in the room.
