Abstract

A method and apparatus of automatically locating in an image of a blood vessel the lumen boundary at a position in the vessel and from that measuring the diameter of the vessel. From the diameter of the vessel and estimate blood flow rate, a number of clinically significant physiological parameters are then determine and various user displays of interest generated. One use of these images and parameters is to aid the clinician in the placement of a stent. The system, in one embodiment, uses these measurements to allow the clinician to simulate the placement of a stent and to determine the effect of the placement. In addition, from these patient parameters various patient treatments are then performed.

Claims (41)

1. A method of displaying a representation of a longitudinal section of a blood vessel comprising:

determining, by one or more processors, that an intravascular probe has been inserted into the blood vessel for stent planning or stenosis assessment;

obtaining, by one or more processors, intravascular data using an intravascular probe;

generating, by the one or more processors, a set of data in response to the intravascular data using an intravascular imaging system comprising one or more processors;

wherein the set of data comprises a plurality of scan lines;

detecting, by the one or more processors, a lumen boundary on a per frame basis, using the one or more processors, wherein a frame comprises a group of scan lines of the plurality of scan lines;

computing, by the one or more processors, a-mean blood vessel diameter values using the detected lumen boundary;

determining, by the one or more processors, a minimum lumen area (MLA) from a set of area values calculated at positions along a segment of the blood vessel;

displaying, by the one or more processors, a user interface on a display, the user interface comprising a first panel, wherein the display is in electrical communication with the intravascular imaging system;

wherein the first panel comprises a first axis, a second axis and a first longitudinal view of the longitudinal section of the blood vessel,

wherein, the first axis corresponds to the mean blood vessel diameter values along the longitudinal section and the second axis corresponds to a position along the longitudinal section;

displaying, by the one or more processors, the computed mean blood vessel diameter relative to the representation of the longitudinal section of the blood vessel relative to the user interface; and

displaying, by the one or more processors, the MLA relative to the user interface, at a user selected frame to guide stent planning or stenosis assessment.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying a branch of the blood vessel as a bar having a width in the user interface corresponding to a position of the branch along the second axis.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising sizing the width of the bar to corresponds to a diameter of the branch.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the lumen boundary comprises identifying a region as lumen boundary tissue on each scan line.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computed blood vessel diameter is used to determine the MLA for the longitudinal section in the user interface.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying a second panel in the user interface, the second panel comprising a second longitudinal view of the longitudinal section.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying a second panel in the user interface, the second panel comprising a first cross-sectional view of a position along the longitudinal section.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying a percent diameter stenosis in the user interface.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising averaging chord lengths for a plurality of cross-sections of the longitudinal section to calculate a mean diameter and displaying the mean diameter in the user interface, each chord length measured relative to a detected lumen boundary.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the diameter value at each position along the longitudinal section is a mean diameter or a measured diameter.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the diameter value at a cross-section along the longitudinal section is a diameter of a circle, wherein an area of the circle is an area of the cross-section.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of generating the first longitudinal view using a plurality of mean cross-sectional diameters.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of displaying a proximal reference and a distal reference in the user interface.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying an alert in the user interface with respect to a position in the longitudinal section.

15. The method of claim 13 further comprising the step of displaying a diameter value for the proximal reference and a diameter value for the distal reference.

16. The method of claim 13 further comprising displaying a minimum lumen area for a subset of the longitudinal section between the proximal reference and the distal reference, wherein the minimum lumen area is determined on a per frame basis using a group of frames in the subset of the longitudinal section and the scan lines of the group of frames.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising superimposing a stent on the first longitudinal view.

18. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying an alert frame on the user interface when an error measure parameter exceeds a threshold.

19. A method of displaying a representation of a longitudinal section of a blood vessel having a lumen comprising:

determining that an intravascular probe has been inserted into the blood vessel using an intravascular imaging system for stent planning or stenosis assessment comprising one or more processors;

obtaining intravascular data using the intravascular probe;

generating, by the one or more processors, a set of data in response to the intravascular data, wherein the set of data comprises a plurality of scan lines;

detecting tissue regions, using the one or more processors, on a per scan line basis, wherein blood artifacts are avoided when detecting tissue regions based on thickness of detected regions;

calculating, by the one or more processors, cross-sectional areas at longitudinal positions along a segment of the blood vessel;

constructing, by the one or more processors, an area graph using the longitudinal positions and the calculated cross-sectional areas;

characterizing, by the one or more processors, regions of stenosis using the area graph to determine a percent stenosis value at one or more of the longitudinal positions;

displaying, using the one or more processors, a user interface comprising a two dimensional longitudinal view of the longitudinal section of the blood vessel on a display, wherein the display is in electrical communication with the intravascular imaging system,

wherein the two dimensional longitudinal view comprises a mean lumen diameter or a lumen area determined by the intravascular imaging system using detected tissue regions, the mean lumen diameter or a lumen area displayed at a user selected frame; and

displaying a percent stenosis value corresponding to one or more longitudinal positions relative to the user interface.
