Abstract

An expandable spinal implant is provided having a frame with a distal wall for retaining an expansion plug such that bone growth promoting material may be introduced to a proximal portion of the implant after expansion. Various implants, systems and methods are disclosed.

Claims (32)

1. A method of using an expandable spinal implant, the method comprising:

providing the expandable spinal implant having a proximal end, an opposite distal end, a frame provided at and adjacent the proximal end, a plug received in an aperture formed in the frame, a first endplate pivotally attached to the frame, and a second endplate pivotally attached to the frame;

moving portions of the plug in the aperture provided in the frame to move a head portion of the plug from a first position to a second position toward the distal end;

pivoting portions of the first endplate away from the frame via interaction, during movement of the head portion from the first position to the second position, and corresponding slidable movement toward the distal end of a first post formed on the head portion of the plug in a first channel formed in the first endplate from a third position to a fourth position in the first channel, the third position being closer to the frame than the fourth position; and

pivoting portions of the second endplate away from the frame via interaction, during movement of the head portion from the first position to the second position, and corresponding slidable movement toward the distal end of a second post formed on the head portion of the plug in a second channel formed in the second endplate from a fifth position to a sixth position in the second channel, the fifth position being closer to the frame than the sixth position.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first endplate includes a first endplate proximal end and a first endplate distal end, the second endplate includes a second endplate proximal end and a second endplate distal end, and the first endplate proximal end and the second endplate proximal end each are pivotally attached to the frame.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first post is provided on a first side of the head portion of the plug, and the second post is provided on an opposite second side of the head portion of the plug.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein portions of the plug include a threaded outer surface engageable to corresponding threads provided in the aperture of the frame.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising rotating the plug to translate the rotation of the plug into linear movement of the head portion from the first position to the second position.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first post is positioned in the first channel and directly engages portions of the first endplate surrounding the first channel, and the second post is positioned in the second channel and directly engages portions of the second endplate surrounding the second channel.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first channel is formed in a first wall of the first endplate, and the second channel is formed in a second wall of the second endplate, the first wall being closer to a mid-longitudinal axis of the spinal implant than the second wall.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the head portion is at least in part wedged shaped, and the head portion is configured to contact portions of the first endplate and the second endplate; and further comprising urging the first endplate and the second endplate to pivot away from the frame via contact of the head portion with the first endplate and the second endplate during movement of the head portion from the first position to the second position.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the head includes a first ramped surface and a second ramped surface configured to contact a first inner angled surface of the first endplate and a second inner angled surface of the second endplate, respectively.

10. A method of using an expandable spinal implant, the method comprising:

providing the expandable spinal implant having a frame, a plug received in an aperture formed in the frame, a first endplate pivotally attached to the frame, and a second endplate pivotally attached to the frame;

moving portions of the plug in the aperture provided in the frame to move a wedge-shaped head portion of the plug from a first position to a second position;

during movement of the wedge-shaped head portion from the first position to the second position, pivoting portions of the first endplate away from the frame via slidable movement toward the distal end of a first post formed on the wedge-shaped head portion of the plug in a first channel formed in the first endplate from a third position to a fourth position therein with the third position being closer to the frame than the fourth position, and contact of the wedge-shaped head portion with the first endplate; and

during movement of the wedge-shaped head portion from the first position to the second position, pivoting portions of the second endplate away from the frame via slidable movement toward the distal end of a second post formed on the wedge-shaped head portion of the plug in a second channel formed in the second endplate from a fifth position to a sixth position therein with the fifth position being closer to the frame than the sixth position, and contact of the wedge-shaped head portion with the second endplate.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first endplate includes a first endplate proximal end and a first endplate distal end, the second endplate includes a second endplate proximal end and a second endplate distal end, and the first endplate proximal end and the second endplate proximal end each are pivotally attached to the frame.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first post is provided on a first side of the wedge-shaped head portion of the plug, and the second post is provided on an opposite second side of the wedge-shaped head portion of the plug.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein portions of the plug include a threaded outer surface engageable to corresponding threads provided in the aperture of the frame.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising rotating the plug to translate the rotation of the plug into linear movement of the wedge-shaped head portion from the first position to the second position.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first post is positioned in the first channel and directly engages portions of the first endplate surrounding the first channel, and the second post is positioned in the second channel and directly engages portions of the second endplate surrounding the second channel.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first channel is formed in a first wall of the first endplate, and the second channel is formed in a second wall of the second endplate, the first wall being closer to a mid-longitudinal axis of the spinal implant than the second wall.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the wedge-shaped head includes a first ramped surface and a second ramped surface configured to contact a first inner angled surface of the first endplate and a second inner angled surface of the second endplate, respectively.

18. A method of using an expandable spinal implant, the method comprising:

providing the expandable spinal implant having a frame, a plug received in an aperture formed in the frame, a first endplate having a first endplate proximal end pivotally attached to the frame, and a second endplate having a second endplate proximal end pivotally attached to the frame;

moving portions of the plug in the aperture provided in the frame to move a head portion of the plug from a first position to a second position;

contacting a first post formed on the head portion with a first channel formed in the first endplate, and pivoting portions of the first endplate away from the frame via slidable movement toward the distal end, during movement of the head portion from the first position to the second position, of the first post formed on the head portion of the plug in the first channel formed in the first endplate from a third position to a fourth position therein with the third position being closer to the frame than the fourth position; and

contacting a second post formed on the head portion with a second channel formed in the second endplate, and pivoting portions of the second endplate away from the frame via slidable movement toward the distal end, during movement of the head portion from the first position to the second position, of the second post formed on the head portion of the plug in the second channel formed in the second endplate from a fifth position to a sixth position therein with the fifth position being closer to the frame than the sixth position.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein portions of the plug include a threaded outer surface engageable to corresponding threads provided in the aperture of the frame.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising rotating the plug to translate the rotation of the plug into linear movement of the head portion from the first position to the second position.
