Abstract

Described are embodiments that include methods and devices for separating components from multi-component fluids. Embodiments may involve use of separation vessels and movement of components into and out of separation vessels through ports. Embodiments may involve the separation of plasma from whole blood. Also described are embodiments that include methods and devices for positioning portions, e.g., loops, of disposables in medical devices. Embodiments may involve use of surfaces for automatically guiding loops to position them into a predetermined position.

Claims (17)

1. A soft cassette comprising:

a first port;

a second port;

a direct flow lumen fluidly connected to the first port and the second port, the direct flow lumen including a first compliant region, a first valve configured to pinch the direct flow lumen closed at the first compliant region, a second compliant region, and a second valve configured to pinch the direct flow lumen closed at the second compliant region;

a drip chamber inter-disposed in the direct flow lumen such that fluid passing through the direct flow lumen passes through the drip chamber; and

a fluid flow bypass path both fluidly connected to the direct flow lumen adjacent the first port and between the first port and the drip chamber and fluidly connected to the direct flow lumen adjacent the second port and between the second port and the drip chamber, such that fluid flowing through the fluid flow bypass path bypasses the drip chamber.

2. The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow bypass path is comprised of a first bypass branch fluidly connected to the direct flow lumen adjacent the first port and a second bypass branch fluidly connected to the direct flow lumen adjacent the second port.

3. The soft cassette of claim 2 , wherein the fluid flow bypass path further comprises a fluid pressure annulus disposed between and fluidly connected to the first bypass branch and the second bypass branch.

4. The soft cassette of claim 3 , wherein the first compliant region is disposed between a first connection with the first bypass branch and the drip chamber.

5. The soft cassette of claim 4 , wherein the second compliant region is disposed between a second connection with the second bypass branch and the drip chamber.

6. The soft cassette of claim 5 , wherein the direct flow lumen comprises a third compliant region, disposed in the first bypass branch, that allows a draw fluid control valve to occlude the first bypass branch.

7. The soft cassette of claim 6 , wherein the first port is fluidly connected to a cassette inlet tubing that moves fluid from a donor into the soft cassette or fluid from the soft cassette to the donor, and wherein the second port is fluidly connected to a loop inlet tubing that moves fluid from the soft cassette into a centrifuge or fluid from the centrifuge to the soft cassette.

8. The soft cassette of claim 7 , wherein, when drawing fluid from the donor, the fluid passes through the fluid flow bypass path.

9. The soft cassette of claim 8 , wherein, when sending fluid to the donor, the fluid passes through the direct flow lumen.

10. The soft cassette of claim 9 , wherein, when drawing fluid from the donor in a subsequent draw, a portion of the fluid previously sent to the donor through the direct flow lumen is maintained in the drip chamber when the fluid passes through the fluid flow bypass path.

11. The soft cassette of claim 1 , wherein the soft cassette is part of a blood component collection set.

12. The soft cassette of claim 11 , wherein the blood component collection set is part of an apheresis system.
