Abstract

Introduced is a technology for withdrawing cash from a cash transaction machine (CTM) by use of a mobile payment application installed on a mobile device of a consumer user (“the CTM technology”). Briefly described, the CTM technology enables a consumer user to identify one or more CTMs from which to withdraw cash by using his/her mobile device (e.g., a smartphone) as a “virtual” card. A particular CTM can be a conventional ATM or a POS system at a merchant's place of business. The user can use a mobile payment application installed on the user's mobile device to identify any nearby CTMs, request a withdrawal amount from a particular CTM from the identified nearby CTMs, receive a transaction code specific to that particular CTM, and physically obtain, or collect, the cash representative of the withdrawal amount at that particular CTM using the transaction code.

Claims (48)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, by a payment service system of a payment service and through a mobile payment application executing on a mobile device of a user, a request for a cash withdrawal transaction, wherein the request includes location data associated with a location of the mobile device;

identifying, by the payment service system and based at least in part on the location data of the mobile device of the user, a cash transaction machine (CTM) that is physically located within a vicinity of the location of the mobile device, wherein the CTM comprises an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) associated with a financial institution, a point-of-sale (POS) system, or a device of another user of the payment service;

causing presentation of, by the payment service system and on a display of the mobile device, a physical location of the CTM;

generating, by the payment service system, a temporary transaction code, wherein the temporary transaction code is configured to authenticate the user to at least the CTM, wherein the temporary transaction code is configured to be active from a first time to a second time, and wherein the second time is the earlier of expiration of a predetermined period of time after the first time or when a change in the location data of the mobile device indicates that a position of the mobile device is outside of a geo-fence associated with the CTM;

provisioning, by the payment service system at the first time, the temporary transaction code to the mobile payment application;

validating the cash withdrawal transaction based on proximity-based communications between the mobile device of the user and the CTM; and

in response to receiving a notification of the cash withdrawal transaction using the temporary transaction code, modifying a ledger associated with the payment service.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the second time is when the change in the location data of the mobile device indicates that the position of the mobile device is outside of the geo-fence associated with the CTM.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the second time is the expiration of the predetermined period of time.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the request further comprises a withdrawal amount submitted by the user to the mobile payment application.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein identifying the CTM is further based at least in part on available cash in the CTM satisfying the withdrawal amount submitted by the user.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, by the payment service system, a plurality of other CTMs based on one or more criteria; and

causing presentation of, by the payment service system and on the display of the mobile device at least one of the plurality of other CTMs.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more criteria comprise:

available cash in the plurality of other CTMs;

transaction fees associated with accounts of users;

maximum withdrawal limits of the accounts of the users; or

availability of the at least one of the plurality of other CTMs at time of receipt of the request.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

updating a user interface associated with the mobile device of the user and the CTM to indicate modification of the ledger.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the cash withdrawal transaction is an only cash withdrawal by the user from the CTM while the temporary transaction code is active.

10. A system associated with a payment service and comprising one or more processors and a non-transitory computer-readable memory communicatively coupled with the one or more processors, the non-transitory computer-readable memory comprising instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving, through a mobile payment application executing on a mobile device of a user, a request for a cash withdrawal transaction, wherein the request includes location data associated with a location of the mobile device;

identifying, based at least in part on the location data of the mobile device of the user, a cash transaction machine (CTM) that is physically located within a vicinity of the location of the mobile device, wherein the CTM comprises an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) associated with a financial institution, a point-of-sale (POS) system, or a device of another user of the payment service;

causing presentation of, on a display of the mobile device, a physical location of the CTM;

generating a temporary transaction code, wherein the temporary transaction code is configured to authenticate the user to at least the CTM, wherein the temporary transaction code is configured to be active from a first time to a second time, and wherein the second time is the earlier of expiration of a predetermined period of time after the first time or when a change in the location data of the mobile device indicates that a position of the mobile device is outside of a geo-fence associated with the CTM;

provisioning the temporary transaction code at the first time to the mobile payment application;

validating the cash withdrawal transaction based on proximity-based communications between the mobile device of the user and the CTM; and

in response to receiving a notification of the cash withdrawal transaction using the temporary transaction code, modifying a ledger associated with the payment service.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second time is when the change in the location data of the mobile device indicates that the position of the mobile device is outside of the geo-fence associated with the CTM.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second time is the expiration of the predetermined period of time.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the request further comprises a withdrawal amount submitted by the user and the CTM is identified based at least in part on an available cash balance of the CTM satisfying the withdrawal amount submitted by the user.

14. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, effectuate operations comprising:

receiving, by a payment service system of a payment service and through a mobile payment application executing on a mobile device of a user, a request for a cash transaction, wherein the request includes location data associated with a location of the mobile device;

identifying, by the payment service system and based at least in part on the location data of the mobile device of the user, a relevant cash transaction machine (CTM), wherein relevance comprises (i) being physically located within a vicinity of the location of the mobile device of the user or (ii) one or more other characteristics of at least one of the mobile device, the user, or the CTM, and wherein the CTM comprises an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) associated with a financial institution, a point-of-sale (POS) system, or a device of another user of the payment service;

causing presentation of, by the payment service system and on a display of the mobile device, a physical location of the CTM;

generating, by the payment service system, a temporary transaction code, wherein the temporary transaction code is configured to authenticate the user to at least the CTM, wherein the temporary transaction code is configured to be active from a first time to a second time, and wherein the second time is the earlier of expiration of a predetermined period of time after the first time or when a change in the location data of the mobile device indicates that a position of the mobile device is outside of a geo-fence associated with the CTM;

provisioning, by the payment service system at the first time, the temporary transaction code to the mobile payment application;

validating the cash transaction based on proximity-based communications between the mobile device of the user and the CTM; and

in response to receiving a notification of a cash withdrawal transaction using the temporary transaction code, modifying a ledger associated with the payment service.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the second time is when the change in the location data of the mobile device indicates that the position of the mobile device is outside of the geo-fence associated with the CTM.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the second time is the expiration of the predetermined period of time.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the request further comprises a transaction amount submitted by the user.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein identifying the CTM is further based at least in part on available cash in the CTM satisfying the transaction amount submitted by the user.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the CTM comprises a funding source.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein a plurality of transactions are performed via the CTM while the temporary transaction code is active.
