Abstract

A device suitable for collecting and transporting urine away from the body of a person including a casing defining an internal volume and an opening. The casing can include a compressible material which is elastically deformable when the device is disposed in a pubic region of a female user. The device can include a porous material disposed within the internal volume and in fluid communication with the opening. The porous material can wick, draw, or direct fluid, such as urine, away from the pubic region of the female user and into the internal volume. The device can include a fluid conduit disposed within the internal volume and enabling extraction of fluid from the internal volume. The device can include a fluid impermeable housing disposed within the internal volume and adhered or otherwise affixed to the casing.

Claims (39)

1. A fluid collection device, comprising:

a casing defining an internal volume and partially defining an opening, the casing including a compressible material elastically deformable when the fluid collection device is disposed in a pubic region of a female user, wherein the compressible material includes a foam that is elastically deformable and has a thickness of at least about 3 mm;

a fluid impermeable housing disposed at least partially within the internal volume of the casing, the fluid impermeable housing defining a cavity and a region of the fluid impermeable housing partially defining the opening, wherein the fluid impermeable housing is separate and distinct from the casing and the internal volume of the casing is shaped substantially complementary to the fluid impermeable housing such that the casing covers the region of the fluid impermeable housing defining the opening; and

a fluid permeable material disposed at least partially within the cavity of the fluid impermeable housing such that the fluid impermeable housing is at least partially positioned between the casing and the fluid permeable material, at least a portion of the fluid permeable material protruding from within the cavity outward away from the casing and the fluid impermeable housing, and through the opening at least partially defined by the fluid impermeable housing and the casing,

wherein the casing and the fluid impermeable housing include complementary longitudinally extending edges positioned adjacent and substantially aligned with one another and defining the opening such that the opening is elongated and extends longitudinally.

2. The fluid collection device of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid conduit disposed within the cavity and configured to enable extraction of fluid from the cavity, wherein the fluid impermeable housing includes a proximal end region having the fluid conduit extending therethrough and a distal end region, at least one of the proximal end region or the distal end region remaining uncovered by the casing.

3. The fluid collection device of claim 1 , wherein:

the fluid permeable material is disposed within the cavity adjacent to the fluid impermeable housing; and

the fluid permeable material protrudes from within the cavity outward away from the casing and beyond at least a portion of the longitudinally extending edges of the casing and the fluid permeable housing defining the opening.

4. The fluid collection device of claim 1 , wherein the fluid impermeable housing is adhesively bonded to the casing, the casing substantially overlaying the fluid impermeable housing.

5. The fluid collection device of claim 1 , wherein the casing has a thickness of about 6 mm to about 9 mm and a diameter of about 2 cm to about 10 cm.

6. The fluid collection device of claim 1 , wherein the casing is sized and configured such that a thickness of the casing varies along a length of the casing when a portion of the casing is compressed between the thighs and/or buttocks of the female user.

7. The fluid collection device of claim 2 , wherein the fluid conduit includes a tube that forms a fluid flow path to extract fluid from the cavity.

8. The fluid collection device of claim 2 , wherein the fluid conduit is configured to couple to a suction device.

9. The fluid collection device of claim 1 , wherein the compressible material includes a closed-cell foam and the casing and the fluid impermeable housing are substantially cylindrical.

10. A fluid collection device, comprising:

a fluid impermeable housing defining an internal volume and at least partially defining an opening;

a casing separate and distinct from the fluid impermeable housing and substantially overlaying the fluid impermeable housing, the casing at least partially defining the opening, wherein the casing has a thickness of about 3 mm to about 25 mm and is a compressible material elastically deformable when the fluid collection device is disposed in a pubic region of a female user; and

a fluid permeable material disposed within the internal volume of the fluid impermeable housing such the fluid impermeable housing is at least partially positioned between the casing and the fluid permeable material, at least a portion of the fluid permeable material protruding from within the cavity outward away from the casing and the fluid impermeable housing, and through the opening at least partially defined by the casing and the fluid impermeable housing,

wherein the casing and the fluid impermeable housing including complementary longitudinally extending edges positioned adjacent and substantially aligned with one another and defining the opening such that the opening is elongated and extends longitudinally,

wherein the fluid impermeable housing includes a proximal end region and a distal end region, at least one of the proximal end region or the distal end region remaining uncovered by the casing.

11. The fluid collection device of claim 10 , further comprising a fluid conduit disposed within the internal volume and configured to enable extraction of fluid from the internal volume, wherein a region of the fluid impermeable housing partially defines the opening and the internal volume of the casing is shaped substantially complementary to the fluid impermeable housing such that the casing covers the region of the fluid impermeable housing defining the opening.

12. The fluid collection device of claim 10 , wherein the compressible material of the casing has a thickness of about 9 mm to about 15 mm.

13. The fluid collection device of claim 10 , wherein the casing is a hydrophobic polyurethane open cell foam.

14. The fluid collection device of claim 10 , wherein a portion of the fluid permeable material extends into the opening to interface with a urethral opening of the female user and wherein the casing and the fluid impermeable housing are substantially cylindrical.

15. The fluid collection device of claim 10 , wherein the casing has a thickness of about 8 mm.

16. The fluid collection device of claim 10 , wherein the casing has a thickness that varies along a length of the casing.

17. The fluid collection device of claim 11 , wherein:

the fluid impermeable housing forms a fluid reservoir at a first end of the internal volume;

the fluid impermeable housing forms an aperture at a second end of the internal volume; and

the fluid conduit includes a tube in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir and extending through the aperture of the fluid impermeable housing.

18. The fluid collection device of claim 11 , wherein the fluid conduit is configured to couple to a suction device, the fluid impermeable housing is bonded to the casing and the fluid permeable material is disposed within the internal volume adjacent to the fluid impermeable housing.

19. A system for transporting urine away from a female user, the system comprising:

a fluid collection device, comprising:

a casing defining an internal volume and partially defining at least partially defining an opening, the casing having a thickness of about 3 mm to about 25 mm and including a compressible material elastically deformable when the fluid collection device is disposed in a pubic region of the female user;
