Abstract

An enhanced modulation scheme for 5G and 6G is disclosed in which amplitude modulation includes a zero-power level, which is readily recognized by the receiver as a special demarcation. This can be used, for example, to unambiguously indicate the start and end of a message, such as a downlink control message, which receivers are generally stressed to detect. The zero-power level can be just one branch of a QAM symbol, or the entire symbol, in various embodiments. Advantageously, the enhanced modulation scheme increases the throughput due to the larger number of encoded states, yet requires no increase in transmission power. In some embodiments, the throughput is increased yet the transmission power is actually reduced, with no loss in SNR. Other aspects are disclosed.

Claims (32)

a) receiving the message;

b) receiving or determining a modulation scheme comprising amplitude modulation according to integer Namp predetermined amplitude levels, the Namp predetermined amplitude levels comprising one zero-power amplitude level and Namp-1 non-zero-power amplitude levels; and

c) demodulating the message according to the modulation scheme;

d) wherein a particular amplitude level of the Namp-1 non-zero-power amplitude levels has a smallest magnitude of the Namp-1 non-zero-power amplitude levels, and the particular amplitude level is at least 10 times larger than a magnitude of the zero-power amplitude level.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message is transmitted according to 5G or 6G technologies.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulation scheme comprises multiplexed amplitude modulation and phase modulation, the phase modulation according to integer Nphase predetermined phase levels.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulation scheme comprises quadrature amplitude modulation (“QAM”) comprising an I branch and a Q branch, the Q branch orthogonal in phase to the I branch, each branch of the I and Q branches independently modulated according to the Namp predetermined amplitude levels.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the modulation scheme comprises exactly three predetermined amplitude levels comprising −1, 0, and +1 amplitude units, respectively.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the modulation scheme comprises exactly five predetermined amplitude levels comprising −3, −1, 0, +1, and +3 amplitude units, respectively.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the modulation scheme comprises exactly five predetermined amplitude levels comprising −4, −2, 0, +2, and +4 amplitude units, respectively.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the modulation scheme comprises a central modulation state wherein the I branch and the Q branch are both modulated according to the zero-power amplitude level.

9. A method for a wireless transmitter to modulate and transmit a message, the method comprising:

a) using a modulation scheme comprising amplitude modulation according to integer Namp predetermined amplitude levels, the Namp predetermined amplitude levels comprising one zero-power amplitude level and Namp-1 non-zero-power amplitude levels;

b) modulating the message according to the modulation scheme; and

c) transmitting the modulated message;

d) wherein the modulation scheme comprises a smallest magnitude amplitude level of the Namp-1 non-zero-power amplitude levels which is at least 10 times larger than a magnitude of an amplitude of the zero-power amplitude level.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising transmitting the zero-power amplitude level concatenated with a beginning of the message.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising transmitting the zero-power amplitude level concatenated with an ending of the message.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising transmitting a demodulation reference proximate to the message.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising transmitting the zero-power amplitude level between the demodulation reference and the message, and concatenated with a beginning of the message.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising transmitting the zero-power amplitude level between the demodulation reference and the message, and concatenated with an ending of the message.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein a beginning of the first modulated message comprises the zero-power amplitude level.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein an ending of the first modulated message comprises the zero-power amplitude level.

17. A wireless network comprising:

a) a base station configured to transmit wireless messages to user devices of the wireless network;

b) a plurality of user devices, each user device registered on the wireless network through the base station;

c) a core network associated with the base station, the core network configured to communicate with one or more other core networks remote from the wireless network; and

d) a modulation scheme comprising amplitude modulation according to integer Namp predetermined amplitude levels, wherein Namp equals 3 or 5.

18. The wireless network of claim 17 , wherein the modulation scheme comprises an I branch and an orthogonal Q branch transmitted simultaneously with the I branch.
