Abstract

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for enabling exercise by a user. In one aspect, an apparatus includes a communication unit, a user interface unit, and a processor. The processor may receive user identification data from the user via the user interface unit and retrieve data based on the user identification data from an electronic data store. The processor may use the data to generate an exercise routine and command signals may be sent to an exercise machine based on the generated exercise routine. The processor may receive exercise data from the exercise machine via the communication unit and store the exercise data in the electronic data store.

Claims (54)

1. A method for managing an exercise competition undertaken by two or more exercise machines, performed by a remote host server comprising a processor, at a location remote from the two or more exercise machines and networked to the two or more exercise machines via two or more networked communication devices, wherein the remote host server is configured to store data associated with a plurality of competition programs, health data, workout data of one or more users, and information related to available competitors, the method comprising:

receiving, by the remote host server, a request for a competition program of the plurality of competition programs from a user of one of the two or more exercise machines;

retrieving, by the remote host server, data associated with the requested competition program from the stored data associated with the plurality of competition programs;

sending, by the remote host server, the data associated with the requested competition program to the one of the two or more exercise machines, wherein the data associated with the requested competition program comprises one or more command signal configured to execute the requested competition program on the one of the two or more exercise machines;

retrieving, by the host server, health data stored for the user and workout data stored for the user;

transmitting, by the remote host server, information related to available competitors for the requested competition program to the one of the two or more exercise machines, wherein the user selects at least one user of another of the two or more exercise machines as at least one of the available competitors from the information related to available competitors for the requested competition program to compete against, wherein the requested competition program comprises one or more executable command signals used to execute the requested competition program on the one of the two or more exercise machines;

receiving, by the remote host server, the user's selection of the at least one of the available competitors;

transmitting, by the remote host server, workout data for the selected at least one of the available competitors for a plurality of time points in the requested competition program to the one of the two or more exercise machines,

wherein upon receiving the data associated with the requested exercise program and the workout data for the selected at least one of the available competitors for the plurality of time points, the one of the two or more exercise machines executes the requested competition program by:

adjusting a physical characteristic of the one of the two or more exercise machines based on the one or more command signals of the requested competition program and the workout data of the selected at least one of the available competitors, wherein the one or more command signals of the requested competition program are at least in part the same for the one of the two or more exercise machines and the at least the other of the two or more exercise machines of the selected at least one of the available competitors;

identifying, by the remote host server, at least one sensor associated with the user and/or the one of the two or more exercise machines and in communication with the remote host server via one of the two or more networked communication devices, wherein the at least one sensor records, new health data and new workout data of the user at the plurality of time points throughout the requested competition program, wherein the new health data and the new workout data are transmitted to the one of the two or more networked communication devices and the host server;

receiving, by the remote host server, the new workout data of the user at the plurality of time points throughout the requested competition program, wherein the host server stores the new health data and the new workout data of the user and adds the new workout data of the user to the information related to available competitors for the requested exercise program;

tracking, by the remote host server, progress of the user based on the new health data and the new workout data and stored health data and workout data of the user; and

causing a display, by the remote host server on a display device of the one of the two or more exercise machines, wherein the new workout data of the user and the workout data for the selected at least one of the available competitors are simultaneously visualized during the course of the competition program to the user at a same time point of the plurality of time points in the requested competition program, wherein the workout data of the user comprises at least one of: speed, distance travelled, calories burned, or wattage produced.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user is geographically remote from the selected at least one of the available competitors.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected at least one of the available competitors completed the requested competition program at a different time than the user.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected at least one of the available competitors start the requested competition program at a same time as the user.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the two or more exercise machines are one of a treadmill, an elliptical, an exercise bicycle, or a controlled weight machine.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the competition program is a race with a plurality of competitors.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more command signals simulate a geographical route.

8. A system comprising:

at least one sensor associated with an exercise machine and/or a user of an exercise machine and configured to measure and record new health data and workout data of the user at a plurality of time points, wherein the workout data of the user comprises at least one of: speed, distance travelled, calories burned, or wattage produced; and

a networked communication device configured to establish wired or wireless communications over a network and to transmit the new health data and the workout data between a host server and the exercise machine of the user via the networked communication device;

wherein the host server is at a location remote from the exercise machine and is configured to: communicate with the network communication device via the network and store data related to a plurality of exercise programs, health data, workout data results of the user, and information related to available competitors using at least another exercise machine networked to the host server; and

wherein the exercise machine of the user comprises:

a non-transitory memory configured to store computer-executable instructions; and

a processor that executes the computer-executable instructions to at least:

receive a request for an exercise program of the plurality of exercise programs from the user of the exercise machine;

retrieve data associated with the requested exercise program, stored user health data, and stored user workout data from the host server using the networked communication device;

identify the requested exercise program retrieved from the host server;

receive the information related to available competitors for the requested exercise program from the host server using the networked communication device, wherein the user selects at least one of the available competitors;

receive workout data for the selected at least one of the available competitors from the host server for the plurality of time points using the networked communication device;

receive the requested exercise program as one or more command signals;

execute the requested exercise program on the exercise machine;

adjust a physical characteristic of the exercise machine based on the one or more command signals, wherein the one or more command signals are at least in part the same for the exercise machine of the user and an exercise machine of the selected at least one of the available competitors at the plurality of time points;

receive the new health data and the workout data of the user at the plurality of time points;

transmit the new health data and the workout data of the user at the plurality of time points to the host server via the networked communication device, wherein the host server is configured to store the new health data and the workout data of the user and add the workout data of the user to the information related to available competitors for the requested exercise program;

track progress of the user based on the new health data and the workout data and the stored health data and workout data; and

compare the workout data of the user and the workout data for the selected at least one of the available competitors, wherein the workout data for the selected at least one of the available competitors is displayed on a display of the exercise machine so that workout data of the user and the workout data for the selected at least one of the available competitors are visualized at a same time point of the plurality of time points in the requested exercise program.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one sensor is at least one of: a heart rate sensor, a pressure sensor, an accelerometer, or a tension senor.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the user is geographically remote from the at least one of the available competitors.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one of the available competitors completed the requested exercise program at a different time than the user.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one of the available competitors start the requested competition program at a same time as the user.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the exercise machine is one of a treadmill, an elliptical, an exercise bicycle, or a controlled weight machine.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the exercise program is a race with a plurality of the available competitors.

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more command signals corresponds to a geographical route.

16. A system that enables exercise competition between competitors at different locations and times, the system comprising:

a first competitor exercise machine at a first location and a first time having a first network communication device;

wherein the first competitor exercise machine is separate from a second competitor exercise machine at a second location and a second time having a second network communication device; and

a host server at a third location remote from the first location and the second location configured to communicate with the first and second network communication devices via a network and to store and update a plurality of race programs and enable selection and transmission of a race program of the plurality of race programs, wherein:

the first competitor exercise machine, via the first network communication device, is configured to request a first instance of the race program from the host server, wherein the first instance comprises a portion of the race program, and then upon receiving the first instance of the race program, the first competitor exercise machine is configured to execute the first instance of the race program at the first time and the first network communication device is configured to access the host server to save performance data and associated times of the first competitor exercise machine, wherein the host server is configured to store a plurality of results, wherein the first instance of the race program comprises one or more command signals that adjust a physical characteristic of the first competitor exercise machine to simulate a route;

the second competitor exercise machine, via the second network communication device, is configured to request a second instance of the race program from the host server, wherein the second instance comprises at least the portion of the race program of the first instance, and then upon receiving the second instance of the race program, the second competitor exercise machine is configured to execute the second instance of the race program at the second time as the second network communication device accesses the host server to retrieve the saved performance data and associated times of the first competitor exercise machine from the plurality of results, wherein the second instance of the race program comprises the same one or more command signals as the first instance of the race program and the second instance of the race program is configured to adjust the physical characteristic of the second competitor exercise machine the same as the first competitor exercise machine to simulate the route the first competitor exercise machine simulated, wherein a user of the second competitor exercise machine competes against the saved performance data and associated times of a user of the first competitor exercise machine for the race program,

wherein the performance data of the first competitor exercise machine at given time points in the race program is displayed to the second competitor exercise machine compared to performance data and associated times of the second competitor exercise machine at equivalent time points during the race program while the second network communication device executes the race program.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the first competitor exercise machine and/or the second competitor exercise machine is one of a treadmill, an elliptical, an exercise bicycle, or a controlled weight machine.
