Methods and systems for accessing stored content
Methods and systems are described for storing content. One or more sections of the stored content may be subdivided into user-specific portions and common portions. The user-specific portions may be stored in user-specific storage associated with corresponding accounts of a plurality of user accounts. The common portions may be stored in common storage associated with the plurality of user accounts. User accounts may request access to the stored content. One or more caching criteria may be used to determine whether to cache any common portions of the stored content. Requests for the content may be processed using the common portions stored in the cache storage.
1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause:
causing, based on a first plurality of requests to record a content item, storage of a first portion of the content item in each of a plurality of user-specific storages associated with corresponding user accounts of a plurality of user accounts and storage of a second portion of the content item in a common storage associated with the plurality of user accounts;
determining, based on a second plurality of requests associated with outputting the stored content item while the content item is being recorded, that one or more caching criteria is satisfied;
determining, based on the determining that the one or more caching criteria is satisfied, to store the second portion in cache storage different from the common storage;
causing, based on the determining to store the second portion in the cache storage, storage of the second portion in the cache storage different from the common storage; and
causing sending of a first portion from one of the plurality of user-specific storages and the second portion from the cache storage.
2. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the content item is being recorded while the second portion is caused to be stored in the cache storage.
3. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the stored content item is requested by at least a portion of users of the plurality of user accounts before the content item is finished being recorded.
4. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause counting a number of the plurality of user accounts currently accessing at least a portion of the content item and updating, based on a change in the number, the caching criteria.
5. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more caching criteria comprises a range of a plurality of segments of the content item predicted to be accessed by at least a portion of the plurality of user accounts engaged in active playback of the content item.
6. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the caching criteria is updated over time as one or more of the plurality of user accounts progress in playback of the content item.
7. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a first portion of a content section and the second portion comprises a second portion of the content section, and wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause appending the second portion to the first portion from the one of the plurality of user-specific storages.
8. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause:
causing, based on a first plurality of requests to record a content item, storage of a first portion of the content item in each of a plurality of user-specific storages associated with corresponding user accounts of a plurality of user accounts and storage of a second portion of the content item in a common storage associated with the plurality of user accounts;
determining, based on a second plurality of requests associated with outputting the stored content item while the content item is being recorded, that one or more caching criteria is not satisfied for at least a portion of the stored content item;
determining, based on the determining that the one or more caching criteria is not satisfied, to remove the second portion from cache storage different from the common storage;
causing, based on the determining to remove the second portion from the cache storage, the second portion to be removed from the cache storage different from the common storage; and
causing sending of a first portion from one of the plurality of user-specific storages and the second portion from the common storage.
9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein at least a portion of the content item is being recorded while the second portion is caused to be stored in the cache storage.
10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein at least a portion of the stored content item is requested by at least a portion of users of the plurality of user accounts before the content item is finished being recorded.
11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause counting a number of the plurality of user accounts currently accessing at least a portion of the content item and updating, based on a change in the number, the caching criteria.
12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the one or more caching criteria comprises a range of a plurality of segments of the content item predicted to be accessed by at least a portion of the plurality of user accounts engaged in active playback of the content item.
13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the range is updated over time to include subsequent segments of the content item as one or more of the plurality of user accounts progress in playback of the content item.
14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the range is associated with timing information indicative of a length of time to use the range for caching decisions.
15. A system comprising:
one or more storage devices; and
one or more computing devices configured to:
cause, based on a first plurality of requests to record a content item, storage of a first portion of the content item in each of a plurality of user-specific storages associated with corresponding user accounts of a plurality of user accounts and storage of a second portion of the content item in a common storage associated with the plurality of user accounts;
determine, based on a second plurality of requests associated with outputting the stored content item while the content item is being recorded, that one or more caching criteria is satisfied;
determine, based on the determining that the one or more caching criteria is satisfied, to store the second portion in cache storage different from the common storage;
cause, based on the determining to store the second portion in the cache storage, storage of the second portion in the cache storage different from the common storage; and
cause sending of a first portion from one of the plurality of user-specific storages and the second portion from the cache storage.
