Abstract

An electrically heatable aerosol-generating device for an aerosol-generating article is provided, including a device housing including a receiving cavity within a proximal portion of the device to receive the article; a separating wall adjacent to a distal end portion of the cavity, separating the cavity within the proximal portion from a distal portion of the device; an electrical heating device to heat an aerosol-forming substrate within the article when the article is received in the cavity; and sensing circuitry including a field generator adjacent to the distal end portion opposite to a proximal end portion of the cavity within the wall or circumferentially around a perimeter or outer circumference of the wall, the circuitry to measure a change of a property of the generator caused by a presence of an indicator at or within the article when the article is received in the cavity. An aerosol-generating system is also provided.

Claims (24)

1. An electrically heatable aerosol-generating device for an aerosol-generating article, the device comprising:

a device housing including a receiving cavity within a proximal portion of the device configured to receive at least a portion of the aerosol-generating article;

wherein the receiving cavity comprises a distal end portion and a proximal end portion opposite to the distal end portion, wherein the distal end portion comprises a bottom portion, and wherein the proximal end portion of the receiving cavity comprises an open end at a proximal end of the proximal portion of the device allowing the aerosol-generating article to be inserted into the receiving cavity,

a separating wall disposed closer to the bottom portion of the receiving cavity than to the open end of the receiving cavity, sealingly separating the receiving cavity within the proximal portion of the device from a distal portion of the device;

at least one electrical heating device configured to heat an aerosol-forming substrate within the aerosol-generating article when the article is received in the receiving cavity; and

sensing circuitry comprising a field generator disposed closer to the bottom portion of the receiving cavity than to the open end of the receiving cavity within the separating wall or circumferentially around a perimeter or outer circumference of the separating wall,

the sensing circuitry being configured to measure a change of at least one property of the field generator caused by a presence of an indicator arranged at or within the aerosol-generating article when the article is received in the receiving cavity,

wherein the field generator is an induction coil,

wherein the induction coil is arranged to not be wound around the receiving cavity, and

wherein the induction coil is integrated within the separating wall or disposed within a circumferential recess of the separating wall.

2. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 , wherein the induction coil is a helical coil or a flat spiral coil.

3. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 2 , wherein the flat spiral coil is a pancake coil or a flat curved spiral coil.

4. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one property of the field generator is an inductance of the field generator.

5. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 , further comprising a controller operatively coupled with the sensing circuitry, the controller being configured to control operation of the at least one electrical heating device based on a comparison of a measured change of the at least one property of the field generator with one or more predetermined values of change of the at least one property of the field generator.

6. An aerosol-generating system, comprising:

an electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 and an aerosol-generating article for the device,

wherein the aerosol-generating article comprises

an aerosol-forming substrate, and

a wrapper surrounding at least a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate and including an indicator having a specific magnetic permeability and a specific electrical resistivity.

7. The aerosol-generating system according to claim 6 , wherein the indicator comprises a thin film or foil made of an electrically conductive material that is applied to at least a portion of an inner surface of the wrapper.

8. The aerosol-generating system according to claim 6 , wherein the indicator forms a closed loop electrically conductive path around a circumference of the aerosol-generating article.

9. The aerosol-generating system according to claim 7 , wherein the indicator forms a closed loop electrically conductive path around a circumference of the aerosol-generating article.

10. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 , further comprising a sealing means arranged along a perimeter or outer circumference of the separating wall.

11. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 10 , wherein the sealing means is a gasket or an O-ring.
