Abstract

A disinfecting cover for use in disinfecting a weight bearing upper surface of a resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support includes a thin barrier membrane drapable on top of the weight bearing upper surface of the resilient support, and a peripherally-extending edge terminating between the peripherally-extending side of the resilient support between the weight bearing upper surface and the bottom surface of the support. The thin barrier membrane comprises an anti-microbial disinfectant, and being non-fibrous, and impervious to the transfer of fluid from the first main surface to the second main surface. The thin barrier membrane comprises a thickness operable to maintain the weight distribution of a patient on the weight bearing upper surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support substantially the same compared to the weight distribution without the thin barrier membrane.

Claims (65)

1 . A method for disinfecting a weight bearing surface of a resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support, the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support further comprising a lower surface, and a peripherally-extending side disposed between the weight bearing upper surface and the lower surface, the method comprising:

removing a support covering from the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support to expose the weight bearing surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support;

providing a disinfecting membrane having a first main surface, an opposite second main surface, and a peripherally-extending edge, the disinfecting membrane being non-fibrous, impervious to the transfer of liquid from the first main surface to the second main surface, and comprising an anti-microbial disinfectant;

disposing the first main surface of the disinfecting membrane over the exposed weight bearing surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support;

providing a support covering;

disposing the support covering over the exposed second main surface of the disinfecting membrane disposed on the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support; and

wherein the disinfecting membrane having the anti-microbial disinfectant is operable for greater than 99% of contact inhibition.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the disinfecting membrane comprises a disinfecting single uniform barrier polymer membrane.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the anti-microbial disinfectant comprises at least one of quaternary ammonium, triclosan, metal ions, metal salts, chitosan, and cyclodextrin.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the disinfecting membrane having the anti-microbial disinfectant is operable for greater than 99% of contact inhibition to methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the disinfecting membrane having the anti-microbial disinfectant is operable for greater than 99% of contact inhibition to:

Aspergillus niger;

Staphylococcus aureus;

Clostridium difficile ( C. diff ); and/or

Escherichia coli ( E. coli ).

6 . The method of claim 1 further comprising releasably securing the disinfecting membrane with static cling properties in position over the weight bearing surface.

7 . The method of claim 1 further comprising releasably securing the disinfecting membrane with adhesive proprieties in position over the weight bearing surface.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the providing the disinfecting membrane comprises providing the disinfecting membrane sized to extend over only between 40 percent and 60 percent of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support.

9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the disposing the disinfecting membrane comprises disposing the first main surface of the disinfecting membrane over the entire weight bearing surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support.

The method of claim 1 wherein the disposing the disinfecting membrane comprises disposing the first main surface of the disinfecting membrane over the weight bearing surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support without moving the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support.

11 . The method of claim 1 wherein the providing the disinfecting membrane further comprises providing the disinfecting membrane disposed on a roll, and removing the disinfecting membrane from the roll.

12 . The method of claim 1 wherein the disinfecting membrane comprises a moisture vapor transmission rate of less than 500 grams per meter 2 per 24 hour period.

13 . The method of claim 1 wherein the disposing the support covering comprises disposing at least one of mattress pads, sheets, draw sheets, pillows and blankets over the disinfecting membrane.

14 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

removing the support covering from the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support;

removing the disinfecting membrane from the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support;

inspecting the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support, and

disposing a second disinfecting membrane in position over the weight bearing surface; and

disposing a support covering over the second main surface of the disinfecting membrane on the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support.

A method for disinfecting a weight bearing surface of a resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support, the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support further comprising a lower surface, and a peripherally-extending side disposed between the weight bearing upper surface and the lower surface, the method comprising:

providing a disinfecting single uniform barrier polymer membrane comprising:

a first main surface, an opposite second main surface, and a peripherally-extending and surrounding edge disposed between said first main surface and said opposite second main surface, said first main surface and said opposite second main surface of said disinfecting membrane operably sized and configured so that said first main surface is disposable over the weight bearing surface;

said disinfecting membrane comprising an anti-microbial disinfectant;

said disinfecting membrane being non-fibrous and impervious to the transfer of fluid from said first main surface to said second main surface; and

wherein said disinfecting membrane comprises said anti-microbial disinfectant operable for greater than 99% of contact inhibition;

disposing the first main surface of the disinfecting member over the exposed weight bearing surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution;

providing a support covering; and

disposing a support covering over the exposed second main surface of the releasably secured disinfecting member on the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support.

16 . The method of claim 15 wherein said disinfecting membrane having said anti-microbial disinfectant is operable for greater than 99% of contact inhibition to:

Aspergillus niger;

Staphylococcus aureus;

Clostridium difficile ( C. diff ); and/or

Escherichia coli ( E. coli ).

17 . The method of claim 15 wherein said disinfecting membrane is operable to simultaneously provide resistance to blood-borne pathogen and/or viral penetration.

18 . The method of claim 15 wherein said disinfecting membrane comprises a moisture vapor transmission rate of less than 500 grams per meter 2 per 24 hour period.

19 . The method of claim 15 wherein said disinfecting membrane comprises static cling properties.

20 . The method of claim 15 wherein said disinfecting membrane comprises a generally rectangular configuration with cutouts disposed at the corners so that said disinfecting membrane is positionable over the surface of the article with said cutouts permitting edges of said disinfecting membrane to extend over peripheral side edge surfaces of the article.

21 . The method of claim 15 further comprising adhesive disposed on said first main surface.

The method of claim 15 further comprising providing said disinfecting membrane disposed on a roll of a dispensing apparatus for supporting said roll, and wherein said dispensing apparatus having movable supports operable for passing said roll over and said movable supports around the weight bearing surface.

23 . The method of claim 15 wherein said anti-microbial disinfectant comprises at least one of quaternary ammonium, triclosan, metal ions, metal salts, chitosan, and cyclodextrin.

The method of claim 15 wherein said disinfecting membrane comprises at least one of the following: polyurethane, poly-vinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, latex, acrylic, polyester, polyvinylidene chloride, polythene, polypropylene carbonate, or combinations thereof.

25 . The method of claim 15 wherein said disinfecting membrane having said anti-microbial disinfectant is operable for greater than 99% of contact inhibition to methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

26 . The method of claim 15 wherein the disposing the first main surface of the disinfecting member comprises releasably securing the disinfecting member in position over the weight bearing surface.

27 . The method of claim 1 wherein the first disinfecting membrane comprises a single disinfecting membrane.

28 . The method of claim 1 wherein:

the disposing the first main surface of the disinfecting membrane comprises draping the first main surface of the disinfecting membrane directly onto the weight bearing surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support; and

the disposing-the support covering over the exposed second main surface of the disinfecting membrane comprises draping the support covering directly onto the exposed second main surface of the disinfecting membrane.

29 . The method of claim 28 wherein the disinfecting membrane comprises a single disinfecting membrane.

30 . The method of claim 14 wherein:

the disposing the second disinfecting membrane comprises draping the second disinfecting membrane directly onto the weight bearing surface; and

the disposing-the support covering over the second main surface of the disinfecting membrane comprises draping the second support covering directly onto the exposed second main surface of the disinfecting membrane.

31 . The method of claim 30 wherein the first disinfecting membrane comprises a single disinfecting membrane, and the second disinfecting membrane comprises a single disinfecting membrane.

32 . The method of claim 15 wherein:

the disposing the first main surface of the disinfecting membrane comprises draping the first main surface of the disinfecting membrane directly onto the weight bearing surface of the resilient medical patient pressure redistribution support; and

the disposing-the support covering over the exposed second main surface of the disinfecting membrane comprises draping the support covering directly onto the exposed second main surface of the disinfecting membrane.
