Abstract

A method provides techniques for electronic device customization based on environmental and location data. The method includes obtaining, on an electronic device, from one or more data sources, context data associated with one or more of the user and the electronic device. A device context is determined based on the context data. The method includes loading a customization display theme for the electronic device, based on the device context, and presenting the customized display theme within a user interface displayed on the display of the electronic device.

Claims (61)

1 . An electronic device comprising:

a display;

a communication interface that enables the electronic device to connect to, and receive instructions from a second electronic device; and

a controller communicatively coupled to the display and the communication interface, wherein the controller is configured to cause the electronic device to:

obtain, from one or more sources, context data associated with one or more of a user and the electronic device, the context data comprising a proximity of the electronic device to at least one of a second device and a geographic location;

determine a device context based on the context data;

load a customization display theme for the electronic device, based on the device context; and

present the customization display theme within a user interface displayed on the display of the electronic device.

2 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein to determine the device context, the controller:

identifies a current geographical location for the electronic device; and

determines the device context based on the current geographical location.

3 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller:

receives a current meteorological condition for a current location of the electronic device; and

determines the device context based on the current meteorological condition.

4 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller:

determines that a distance between the electronic device and an address or location associated with one or more contacts is less than a predetermined threshold distance;

determines the device context based on the electronic device being in proximity to the address or location associated with the one or more contacts;

obtains an image associated with the one or more contacts; and

renders the image as a background image on the display of the electronic device in response to the distance being less than the predetermined threshold distance.

5 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller:

determines that a distance between the electronic device and the second electronic device is less than a predetermined threshold distance;

determines the device context based on a proximity of the electronic device to the second electronic device and a user identifier associated with the second electronic device;

obtains an image associated with the user identifier, and

renders the image as a background image on the display of the electronic device in response to the distance being less than the predetermined threshold distance.

6 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein to load the customization display theme, the controller renders, on the display, at least one of a background image and a lock screen image, selected based on the device context.

7 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein to load the customization display theme, the controller changes at least one of a font type, a font size, and a font color, at least in part based on the device context.

8 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the controller:

transmits, via the communication interface, instructions to the second electronic device to cause the second electronic device to load a second customization display theme on a second display of the second electronic device, wherein the second customization display theme is selected based on the device context.

9 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein to obtain context data, the controller obtains, from a calendar system, a calendar event associated with the electronic device, wherein the customization display theme is selected based on the calendar event.

10 . A method comprising:

obtaining, on an electronic device, from one or more data sources, context data associated with one or more of a user and the electronic device, the context data comprising a proximity of the electronic device to at least one of a second device and a geographic location;

determining a device context based on the context data;

loading a customization display theme for the electronic device, based on the device context; and

presenting the customization display theme within a user interface displayed on a display of the electronic device.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

identifying a current geographical location for the electronic device; and

setting the device context based on the current geographical location.

12 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

receiving a current meteorological condition for a current location of the electronic device; and

setting the device context based on the current meteorological condition.

13 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

determining that a distance between the electronic device and an address or location associated with one or more contacts is less than a predetermined threshold distance;

determining the device context based on the electronic device being in proximity to the address or location associated with the one or more contacts;

obtaining an image associated with the one or more contacts; and

rendering the image as a background image on the display of the electronic device in response to the distance being less than the predetermined threshold distance.

14 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

determining that a distance between the electronic device and a second electronic device is less than a predetermined threshold distance;

determining the device context based on a proximity of the electronic device to the second electronic device and a user identifier associated with the second electronic device;

obtaining an image associated with the user identifier, and

rendering the image as a background image on the display of the electronic device in response to the distance being less than the predetermined threshold distance.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein loading the customization display theme further comprises rendering at least one of a background image and a lock screen image on a display of the electronic device, selected based on the device context.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein loading the customization display theme further comprises changing at least one of a font type, a font size, and a font color, at least in part based on the device context.

17 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting, via a communication interface of the electronic device, instructions to a second electronic device to cause the second electronic device to load a second customization display theme on a second display of the second electronic device, wherein the second customization display theme is selected based on the device context.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein obtaining context data comprises obtaining, from a calendar system, a calendar event associated with the electronic device.

19 . A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium having program instructions that when executed by a processor of an electronic device that comprises a display, and a network interface, configures the electronic device to perform functions comprising:

obtaining from one or more data sources, context data associated with one or more of a user and the electronic device, the context data comprising a proximity of the electronic device to at least one of a second device and a geographic location;

determining a device context based on the context data;

loading a customization display theme for the electronic device, based on the device context; and

presenting the customization display theme within a user interface displayed on the display of the electronic device.

20 . The computer program product of claim 19 , wherein the computer program product further comprises program instructions for:

transmitting, via the network interface, instructions to a second electronic device to cause the second electronic device to load a second customization display theme on a second display of the second electronic device, wherein the second customization display theme is selected based on the device context.
