Abstract

A Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) device includes a flow generator that generates a supply of pressurized air. The flow generator includes a programmable controller. The programmable controller is adapted to allow continuous access to at least one active operating mode and selective access to at least one dormant operating mode. The programmable controller includes a mode control system adapted to receive a data signal to control the selective access to the at least one dormant operating mode.

Claims (29)

1 . A Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) device comprising:

a flow generator configured to generate a supply of pressurized air, the flow generator including a controller;

the controller configured to:

control operation of the PAP device based on an active operating mode included in the PAP device, wherein access to active operation mode is continuously available for use; and

control operation of the PAP device based on a restricted operating mode included in the PAP device, wherein access to the restricted operating mode is granted based on receiving a data signal indicating that a patient interface corresponding to the restricted operating mode is connected to the PAP device for use, wherein the access to the restricted operating mode is restricted before the data signal is received.

2 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the active operating mode is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mode.

3 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the restricted operating mode includes an automatically adjusting pressure mode.

4 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein restricted operating mode includes an Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR) mode.

5 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the data signal is received from the patient interface based on the patient interface being connected to the PAP device.

6 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein access to the restricted operating mode is granted for a set time period after receiving the data signal, and the controller is configured to provide a reminder to replace the patient interface prior to expiration of the set time period.

7 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to receive a pin or code number via a telephone or Internet connection to grant access to the restricted operating mode.

8 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to periodically detect the data signal, and restricts access to the restricted operating mode based on the data signal not being detected.

9 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the patient interface includes a proximity switch configured to provide the data signal.

10 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the data signal is a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag present in the patient interface.

11 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the restricted operating mode is capable of repeated activation by a data signal.

12 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the data signal is a pin or code number.

13 . The PAP device according to claim 12 , wherein the pin or code number includes numbers, letters and/or symbols or any combination thereof.

14 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the flow generator includes a user input unit configured to receive a pin or code to grant access to the restricted operating mode.

15 . The PAP device according to claim 14 , wherein the user input unit is a keypad.

16 . The PAP device according to claim 1 , wherein the restricted operating mode is activated for a predetermined time period.

17 . The PAP device according to claim 16 , wherein the controller includes a clock that is activated by the data signal and controls the predetermined time period.

18 . The PAP device according to claim 17 , wherein the clock counts down the predetermined amount of time.

19 . The PAP device according to claim 16 , wherein the predetermined time period counts in real time.

20 . The PAP device according to claim 16 , wherein the predetermined time period counts the hours of usage.

21 . A method for controlling a Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) device comprising a flow generator configured to generate a supply of pressurized air and a controller configured to control operation of the flow generator, the method comprising:

controlling operation of the PAP device based on an active operating mode included in the PAP device, wherein access to active operation mode is continuously available for use, and

controlling operation of the PAP device based on a restricted operating mode included in the PAP device, wherein access to the restricted operating mode is granted based on receiving a data signal free indicating that a patient interface corresponding to the restricted operating mode is connected to the PAP device for use, wherein the access to the restricted operating mode is restricted before the data signal is received.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the active operating mode is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mode and the restricted operating mode includes an automatically adjusting pressure mode or an Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR) mode.

23 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the data signal includes a pin or code number and the data signal is received from the patient interface based on the patient interface being connected to the PAP device.
