Abstract

In one embodiment, a method by an apparatus of a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) network includes accessing an attestation token for the apparatus. The method further includes encoding the attestation token in a BGP signaling message. The method further includes sending the BGP signaling message with the encoded attestation token to a second apparatus of the BGP network.

Claims (41)

1 . A method, comprising:

generating, by a crypto-processor, an attestation token, wherein the attestation token is an asynchronous, unidirectional time-based variant which binds internal counters on a network element with a known external state;

applying the attestation token to a signaling message in a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) network;

attesting, by the crypto-processor, one or more running binaries corresponding to a valid chain of binary signatures on the network element to indicate that the network element is in a known safe state at a current time;

verifying a level of trustworthiness of the network element based on the attestation token; and

computing, a routing table of the BGP network using the level of trustworthiness.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the crypto-processor is associated with the internal counters.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein:

the attestation token allows the BGP network to validate that the network element is in the known safe state at the current time based on a state of the internal counters; and

the known safe state of the network element is based on an identity of the network element and the one or more running binaries corresponding to the valid chain of binary signatures on the network element.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the attestation token of the network element is valid at the current time.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising setting a value to the network element when the network element is validated at the current time.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the attestation token comprises encoding the attestation token in the signaling message.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein encoding the attestation token in the signaling message comprises appending the attestation token to a BGP keepalive message.

8 . One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

generating, by a crypto-processor, an attestation token, wherein the attestation token is an asynchronous, unidirectional time-based variant which binds internal counters on a network element with a known external state;

applying the attestation token to a signaling message in a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) network;

attesting, by the crypto-processor, one or more running binaries corresponding to a valid chain of binary signatures on the network element to indicate that the network element is in a known safe state at a current time;

verifying a level of trustworthiness of the network element based on the attestation token; and

computing a routing table of the BGP network using the level of trustworthiness.

9 . The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 8 , wherein the crypto-processor is associated with the internal counters.

10 . The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 9 , wherein:

the attestation token allows the BGP network to validate that the network element is in the known safe state at the current time based on a state of the internal counters; and

the known safe state of the network element is based on an identity of the network element and the one or more running binaries corresponding to the valid chain of binary signatures on the network element.

11 . The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 8 , the operations further comprising determining that the attestation token of the network element is valid at the current time.

12 . The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 8 , the operations further comprising setting a value to the network element when the network element is validated at the current time.

13 . The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 8 , wherein applying the attestation token comprises encoding the attestation token in the signaling message.

14 . The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 13 , wherein encoding the attestation token in the signaling message comprises appending the attestation token to a BGP keepalive message.

15 . A network element comprising one or more processors and one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media coupled to the one or more processors and including instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the network element to perform operations comprising:

generating, by a crypto-processor, an attestation token, wherein the attestation token is an asynchronous, unidirectional time-based variant which binds internal counters on a network element with a known external state;

applying the attestation token to a signaling message in a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) network;

attesting, by the crypto-processor, one or more running binaries corresponding to a valid chain of binary signatures on the network element to indicate that the network element is in a known safe state at a current time;

verifying, by the crypto-processor, a level of trustworthiness of the network element based on the attestation token; and

computing, by the crypto-processor, a routing table of the BGP network using the level of trustworthiness.

16 . The network element of claim 15 , wherein the crypto-processor is associated with the internal counters.

17 . The network element of claim 16 , wherein:

the attestation token allows the BGP network to validate that the network element is in the known safe state at the current time based on a state of the internal counters; and

the known safe state of the network element is based on an identity of the network element and the one or more running binaries corresponding to the valid chain of binary signatures on the network element.

18 . The network element of claim 15 , the operations further comprising determining that the attestation token of the network element is valid at the current time.

19 . The network element of claim 15 , the operations further comprising setting a value to the network element when the network element is validated at the current time.

20 . The network element of claim 15 , wherein applying the attestation token comprises encoding the attestation token in the signaling message.
