Abstract

A method performed by a user equipment, UE, for enabling user plane integrity protection of data in a packet data convergence protocol, PDCP, in a radio access network is provided. The method includes sending a session establishment request towards a session management node that includes an indication of a user plane integrity protection mode supported by the UE. The method further includes receiving an activation message from a receiving radio access node that includes an indication to the UE to activate the user plane integrity protection mode for a data radio bearer established with the receiving radio access node. Methods performed by a session management node, a target access and mobility node, and a radio access node are also provided.

Claims (14)

1 . A method performed by a user equipment (UE) for enabling user plane integrity protection of data in a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) in a radio access network, the method comprising:

sending, during a mobility registration update procedure, a registration request to a target core node that includes an indication that the UE supports a user plane integrity protection mode for communicating with a radio access node, wherein the radio access node is an evolved long term evolution radio access node;

resending, to the target core node, the registration request including the indication that the UE supports the user plane integrity protection mode; and

after the mobility registration update procedure, receiving an activation message from the radio access node that includes an indication to the UE to activate the user plane integrity protection mode for a data radio bearer established with the radio access node and in response to the activation message, activating the user plane integrity protection mode in the PDCP for the data radio bearer.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user plane integrity protection mode comprises one of:

the UE supports user plane integrity protection in PDCP with the radio access node at a full data rate, and

the UE supports user plane integrity protection in PDCP with the radio access node at a defined rate that is less than the full data rate.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a request from the target core node to resend the registration request including the indication that the UE supports the user plane integrity protection mode.

4 . A user equipment (UE) for enabling user plane integrity protection of data in a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) in a radio access network, the UE comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, wherein the memory stores instructions that when executed by the processor causes the processor to:

send, during a mobility registration update procedure, a registration request to a target core node that includes an indication that the UE supports a user plane integrity protection mode for communicating with a radio access node, wherein the radio access node is an evolved long term evolution radio access node;

resend, to the target core node, the registration request including the indication that the UE supports the user plane integrity protection mode; and

receive, after the mobility registration update procedure, an activation message from the radio access node that includes an indication to the UE to activate the user plane integrity protection mode for a data radio bearer established with the radio access node and in response to the activation message, activating the user plane integrity protection mode in the PDCP for the data radio bearer.
