Abstract

A filter unit for a mixing apparatus includes a hydrophilic filter and a hydrophobic vent filter. The hydrophilic filter is configured to receive a fluid including a liquid and gas. The hydrophilic filter is further configured to sterilize the liquid. The hydrophobic vent filter is configured to receive the gas from the hydrophilic filter. The hydrophobic vent filter further includes a vent and a membrane configured to separate an interior of the filter unit from an exterior of the filter unit, the gas being vented from the filter unit by flowing across the membrane and out of the vent. In some embodiments, the filter unit further includes a defoaming device configured to receive gas, foam comprised the liquid containing trapped gas, and some of the liquid from the hydrophilic filter and is further configured to release at least some of the gas from the foam.

Claims (46)

1 . A filter unit for a mixing apparatus comprising:

a cylindrical hydrophilic filter centered on a vertical axis and configured to;

receive a fluid including liquid and gas; and

allow the liquid to pass to an outlet while directing the gas upwards; and

a hydrophobic vent filter coupled above and physically supported by the hydrophilic filter, the hydrophobic vent filter comprising:

a hollow cylindrical filter element comprising a membrane; and

a cylindrical filter capsule comprising a vent,

wherein the cylindrical filter capsule and the hollow cylindrical filter element are centered on the vertical axis such that the hydrophobic vent filter is arranged to receive, the gas directed upwards by the cylindrical hydrophilic filter and to allow the gas to flow across the membrane and out of the vent.

2 . The filter unit of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic vent filter is configured to receive at least some of the liquid and at least some of the gas from the hydrophilic filter.

3 . The filter unit of claim 1 , wherein the filter element is coupled to the filter capsule such that the gas is vented from the filter unit by flowing across the membrane into a hollow center of the filter element and out of the vent.

4 . The filter unit of claim 1 , wherein the filter element is coupled to the filter capsule such that the gas is vented from the filter unit by flowing across the membrane from a hollow center of the filter element to an exterior of the filter element, and out of the vent.

5 . The filter unit of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophilic filter comprises an additional hollow cylindrical filter element disposed within an additional cylindrical filter capsule, the additional cylindrical filter capsule comprising an outlet port and the additional hollow cylindrical filter element comprising a second membrane configured to sterilize the liquid;

wherein the additional hollow filter element is coupled to the additional cylindrical filter capsule such that the liquid is evacuated from the hydrophilic filter by flowing across the second membrane and out of the outlet port; and

wherein an axis of the hollow filter element is aligned with an additional axis of the additional hollow filter element.

6 . The filter unit of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic vent filter is at least partially composed of at least one of polytetrafluoroethylene or polyvinylidene fluoride.

7 . The filter unit of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophilic filter is at least partially composed of a polyethersulfone.

8 . The filter unit of claim 5 , further comprising a defoaming device positioned between the hydrophilic filter and the hydrophobic vent filter, wherein the defoaming device is configured to receive a foam formed by the liquid and the gas from the hydrophilic filter and to release at least some of the gas from the foam, wherein the defoaming device is cylindrical and is aligned with the axis of the hollow filter element and the additional axis of the additional hollow filter element.

9 . The filter unit of claim 8 , wherein the defoaming device contains a defoaming substance configured to release the at least some of the gas from the foam.

10 . A method of filtering comprising:

receiving, at a filter unit for a mixing apparatus, a fluid including a liquid and a gas, wherein the filter unit comprises:

a cylindrical hydrophilic filter centered on a vertical axis and configured to;

receive the fluid including liquid and gas; and

allow the liquid to pass to an outlet while directing the gas upwards; and

a hydrophobic vent filter coupled above and physically supported by the hydrophilic filter, the hydrophobic vent filter comprising:

a hollow cylindrical filter element comprising a membrane; and

a cylindrical filter capsule comprising a vent, wherein the cylindrical filter capsule and the hollow cylindrical filter element are centered on the vertical axis such that the hydrophobic vent filter is arranged to receive gas directed upwards by the cylindrical hydrophilic filter and to allow the gas to flow across the membrane and out of the vent;

venting at least a portion of the gas across the membrane and out of the vent of the hydrophobic vent filter;

sterilizing the liquid by the hydrophilic filter; and

evacuating the sterilized liquid from the filter unit.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the hydrophobic vent filter is configured to receive at least a portion of the liquid with the portion of the gas.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the filter unit further comprises a defoaming device positioned between the hydrophilic filter and the hydrophobic vent filter, and wherein the method further includes directing a foam formed in the fluid to the defoaming device, wherein the defoaming device is configured to release at least a portion of gas from the foam.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the defoaming device contains a defoaming substance configured to release the at least some of the gas from the foam.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the hydrophobic vent filter is at least partially composed of at least one of polytetrafluorethylene or polyvinylidene fluoride.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein venting the gas comprises venting the gas across the membrane into a hollow center of the filter element and out of the vent.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein venting the gas comprises venting the gas across the membrane from a hollow center of the filter element to an exterior of the filter element, and out of the vent.

17 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the hydrophilic filter comprises an additional hollow cylindrical filter element disposed within an additional cylindrical filter capsule, the additional cylindrical filter capsule comprising an outlet port and the additional hollow cylindrical filter element comprising a second membrane configured to sterilize the liquid;

wherein sterilizing the liquid comprises flowing the liquid across the membrane into a hollow center of the additional hollow cylindrical filter element; and

wherein evacuating the sterilized liquid comprises evacuating the liquid out of the outlet port.

18 . A hydrophobic vent filter, comprising:

a cylindrical filter capsule; and

a hollow cylindrical filter element disposed within the cylindrical filter capsule;

wherein the filter capsule comprises a vent and the filter element comprises a membrane,

wherein gas is vented from the hydrophobic vent filter by flowing across the membrane and out of the vent,
