Abstract

A building management system, such as a small or medium business, having one or more control devices. Assigning codes to devices, and reading and listing them may aid in configuring the devices. Templates may be used for dynamic configuration of devices and equipment. Representing terminal assignments and wiring diagrams of control devices may be intuitive in that they resemble real hardware for ease of complete installation. The present system and approach may provide an intuitive way of securely registering devices with cloud usage, for example, involving a mobile phone with no manual entry of data so that a user can complete this process with ease. An intuitive, automatic and asynchronous device configuration downloading may be seen, such as to multiple control devices in a single shot. There may be seamless configuration data synchronization, for example, in view of replacement devices, or so the latest data is readily available.

Claims (51)

1 . A method for configuring a building management system comprising:

selecting two or more compatible templates from a group of templates deployed in a cloud that correspond to a particular combination of an equipment and a control device of the building management system, the group of templates having a predetermined hierarchal arrangement that defines compatibility relationships between the templates to provide configuration information for each of a plurality of combinations of equipment and control devices depending on the selected two or more compatible templates from the group of templates, the group of templates comprises two or more of a device template, an equipment template, a property template, a schedule template, an alarm template, a user interface template and a rules template and the selected two or more compatible templates including at least a selected device template and a selected equipment template that is compatible with the selected device template;

automatically generating combined configuration information for the particular combination of the equipment and the control device of the building management system based on the configuration information of each of the selected two or more compatible templates of the group of templates;

associating an application user interface with the combined configuration information for the particular combination of the equipment and the control device of the building management system;

uploading the combined configuration information of each of the selected two or more compatible templates to the equipment and/or the control device of the building management system; and

executing the particular combination of the equipment and the control device of the building management system using the uploaded configuration information.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the application user interface is produced by a mobile app on a mobile device; and

the configuration information is stored in a local database of the mobile device containing the mobile app.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the mobile app imports combined configuration information from the two or more compatible templates to the mobile device, stores them in the local database, and uses the combined configuration information from the two or more templates without internet connectivity by the mobile app.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the building management system is a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular combination of the equipment and the control device of the building management system include at least:

an equipment device; and

a control device that is a different device type than the equipment device.

6 . A system for dynamic configuration of a particular combination of an equipment and a control device of the building management system comprising:

a cloud comprising a processor and being configured to store a plurality of templates, wherein the plurality of templates is connected in a predetermined hierarchal arrangement that defines compatibility relationships between the templates and is used to automatically produce combined configuration information for each of a plurality of available options for the particular combination of an equipment and a control device of the building management system depending on a selected combination two or more compatible templates of the plurality of templates, the selected combination of two or more compatible templates including at least a selected device template and a selected equipment template that is compatible with the selected device template;

a mobile device in communication with the cloud, the mobile device comprising a mobile app with an application user interface; and

wherein:

the application user interface is configured to allow a user to select the two or more compatible templates to store in a local database of the mobile device, and the mobile app is configured to generate the configuration for the particular combination of an equipment and a control device of the building management system based on the combined configuration information from the selected two or more compatible templates.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of templates include two or more of device templates, equipment templates, property templates, schedule templates, alarm templates, user interface templates and rules templates.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein:

the user interface template comprises of one or more details of user interface controls for each parameter displayed or to be displayed; and

the one or more details are selected from a group comprising parameter display text, possible values, default values, font styles, font sizes, font colors, alignments of user interface control, and placement of user interface control.

9 . The system of claim 7 , wherein:

once a template is selected, one or more parameter values of that template can be customized via the application user interface; and

the template is saved as a custom template that can be used in new sites.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein:

the mobile app can use the combined configuration information from the selected two or more compatible templates to get BACnet point details to which each parameter of a configuration is mapped; and

the BACnet point details are used to download data.

11 . The system of claim 6 , wherein each template has configuration information, wherein the configuration information comprises a plurality of parameters each with a corresponding value, and wherein each parameter is revealed to the application user interface with an intuitive or meaningful name.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the value or values of the parameters are initially default values.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the value or values of the parameters are most common values.

14 . The system of claim 6 , wherein

the configuration information is stored in the local database of the mobile device containing the mobile app.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the mobile app maps configuration information from each of the selected two or more compatible templates using a property name as an identifier.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein:

the mobile app imports the selected two or more compatible templates, stores the selected two or more compatible templates in the local database, and uses the combined configuration information from the selected two or more compatible templates without the mobile device having internet connectivity.

17 . The system of claim 6 , wherein each of the plurality of templates is a JSON file with the configuration information.

18 . An apparatus for configuring heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) equipment for buildings, comprising:

a mobile device comprising:

a plurality of templates downloadable from a cloud and stored in a local database on the mobile device, wherein the plurality of templates is connected in a predetermined hierarchal arrangement that defines compatibility relationships between the templates and is used to automatically produce combined configuration information for each of a plurality of available options for the HVAC equipment depending on a selected combination of two or more compatible templates of the plurality of templates, the selected combination of two or more compatible templates including at least a selected device template and a selected equipment template that is compatible with the selected device template;

a mobile application having an application user interface;

wherein:

the application user interface is configured to allow a user to select the combination of the two or more compatible template from the plurality of templates, and the mobile app is configured to generate the combined configuration information of the selected two or more compatible templates selected by the user of the mobile device; and

the mobile device configured to upload the combined configuration information to the HVAC equipment.

19 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein:

once a template is selected, one or more parameter values of that template can be customized via the application user interface; and

then that template is saved as a custom template which can be used in a new site.

20 . The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) equipment further comprises a particular combination of equipment and the control devices including at least:
