Abstract

A hearing device adapted for use by a wearer comprises an audio streaming circuit configured to receive electromagnetic audio streaming via a first communication link. A configuration circuit is configured to receive configuration parameters via a second communication link different from the first communication link for configuring the hearing device to receive the electromagnetic audio streaming. Control circuitry of the hearing device configures the hearing device to enable reception of the electromagnetic audio streaming in accordance with the received configuration parameters.

Claims (48)

1 . A hearing device adapted for use by a wearer, the hearing device comprising:

an audio streaming circuit configured to establish wireless connectivity with a multicast electromagnetic audio streaming source, the streaming source configured to broadcast a plurality of electromagnetic audio streams including a hearing-impaired audio stream;

a configuration circuit configured to select the hearing-impaired audio stream from the plurality of electromagnetic audio streams; and

control circuitry that configures the hearing device to enable reception of the hearing-impaired audio stream and to play the hearing-impaired audio stream to the wearer's ear, wherein the control circuit is configured to apply filter coefficients based upon an acoustic impulse response of a sound space within which the hearing-impaired audio stream is played to the wearer's ear.

2 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein the hearing-impaired audio stream is generated for the wearer on a general or individualized basis.

3 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein the hearing-impaired audio stream is generated for the wearer using an audiogram of the wearer.

4 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein the hearing-impaired audio stream is generated for the wearer using source material of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

5 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the streaming source and the hearing device is configured to apply processing to the hearing-impaired audio stream to enhance intelligibility of speech content of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

6 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the streaming source and the hearing device is configured to apply processing to the hearing-impaired audio stream to enhance listening comfort during playing of the hearing-impaired audio stream to the wearer's ear.

7 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the streaming source and the hearing device is configured to apply processing to the hearing-impaired audio stream including one or more of compressive amplification, dynamic range expansion, noise reduction, pitch adjustment, frequency lowering, and binaural spatial enhancement.

8 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein:

the hearing device is communicatively coupled to a portable communication device having a display; and

the portable communication device is configured to display closed captioning data received from the streaming source that corresponds to content of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

9 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein:

the hearing device is communicatively coupled to a portable communication device having a display; and

the portable communication device is configured to display video received from the streaming source that corresponds to content of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

10 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein:

the hearing device is communicatively coupled to a portable communication device having a display via a neck loop receiver and an inductive link; and

the portable communication device is configured to display closed captioning data or video received from the streaming source that corresponds to content of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

11 . The hearing device of claim 1 , wherein:

the audio streaming circuit is configured to establish wireless connectivity with the streaming source via a first communication link; and

the configuration circuit is configured to receive configuration parameters comprising a predetermined stream identifier via a second communication link different from the first communication link for configuring the hearing device to receive the hearing-impaired audio stream from the streaming source.

12 . The hearing device of claim 11 , wherein:

the first communication link comprises a long-range communication link configured to communicatively couple the streaming source and the hearing device; and

the second communication link comprises a short-range communication link configured to communicatively couple a source of the configuration parameters and the hearing device.

13 . The hearing device of claim 11 , wherein the configuration parameters are received from a beacon or a portable communication device.

14 . A method of communications for a hearing device configured for use by a wearer, comprising:

establishing wireless connectivity between a multicast electromagnetic audio streaming source and the hearing device;

selecting, by the hearing device, a hearing-impaired audio stream from a plurality of electromagnetic audio streams broadcasted by the streaming source;

configuring the hearing device to enable reception of the hearing-impaired audio stream and to play the hearing-impaired audio stream to the wearer's ear; and

communicatively coupling the hearing device with a portable communication device having a display via a neck loop receiver and an inductive link; and

presenting, on the display, closed captioning data or video received from the streaming source that corresponds to content of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

15 . The method of claim 14 , comprising applying processing to the hearing-impaired audio stream to enhance intelligibility of speech content of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

16 . The method of claim 14 , comprising applying processing to the hearing-impaired audio stream to enhance listening comfort during playing of the hearing-impaired audio stream to the wearer's ear.

17 . The method of claim 14 , comprising applying processing to the hearing-impaired audio stream including one or more of compressive amplification, dynamic range expansion, noise reduction, pitch adjustment, frequency lowering, and binaural spatial enhancement.

18 . The method of claim 14 , comprising applying filter coefficients based upon an acoustic impulse response of a sound space within which the hearing-impaired audio stream is played to the wearer's ear.

19 . The method of claim 14 , comprising displaying, via a portable communication device communicatively coupled to the hearing device, closed captioning data or video received from the streaming source that corresponds to content of the hearing-impaired audio stream.

20 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:

establishing wireless connectivity comprises establishing wireless connectivity between the streaming source and the hearing device via a first communication link; and

receiving configuration parameters comprising a predetermined stream identifier via a second communication link different from the first communication link for configuring the hearing device to receive the hearing-impaired audio stream from the streaming source.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein:

the first communication link comprises a long-range communication link configured to communicatively couple the streaming source and the hearing device; and

the second communication link comprises a short-range communication link configured to communicatively couple a source of the configuration parameters and the hearing device.

22 . A method of communications for a hearing device configured for use by a wearer, comprising:

establishing wireless connectivity between a multicast electromagnetic audio streaming source and the hearing device;

selecting, by the hearing device, a hearing-impaired audio stream from a plurality of electromagnetic audio streams broadcasted by the streaming source;

configuring the hearing device to enable reception of the hearing-impaired audio stream and to play the hearing-impaired audio stream to the wearer's ear; and
