Abstract

A docking station for a surface cleaning apparatus comprises a docking station air inlet that is connectable in fluid flow communication with the dirt collection region of the surface cleaning apparatus. An air flow path extends from the docking station air inlet to a docking station air outlet. A first cyclonic stage comprises a cyclone chamber and a docking station dirt collection region. The cyclone chamber has a cyclone chamber air inlet, a cyclone chamber air outlet and a cyclone axis of rotation, wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone axis of rotation extends generally vertically. The first cyclonic stage comprises a first stage air treatment chamber of the docking station.

Claims (21)

1 . A combination of a vacuum cleaner having a motor and fan assembly and a docking station for the vacuum cleaner wherein, when the vacuum cleaner is docked at the docking station, the docking station is operable to collect dirt from a dirt collection region of the vacuum cleaner, the docking station comprising:

(a) a docking station air inlet that is connectable in fluid flow communication with the dirt collection region;

(b) an air flow path extending from the docking station air inlet to a docking station air outlet;

(c) a first cyclonic stage comprising a cyclone chamber and a docking station dirt collection region, the cyclone chamber having a cyclone chamber air inlet, a cyclone chamber air outlet and a cyclone axis of rotation, wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone axis of rotation extends generally vertically

wherein the first cyclonic stage comprises a first stage air treatment chamber of the docking station,

wherein when the vacuum cleaner is docked at the docking station, an air stream that is produced by the motor and fan assembly of the vacuum cleaner and that contains dirt collected in the vacuum cleaner is drawn through the docking station air inlet into the docking station where the air is treated to remove the collected dirt and a clean air stream is emitted from the docking station air outlet.

2 . The combination of claim 1 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone chamber air inlet and the cyclone chamber air outlet are located at an upper end of the cyclone chamber.

3 . The combination of claim 1 wherein the cyclone chamber further comprises a dirt outlet and the docking station dirt collection region is a dirt collection chamber that is external to the cyclone chamber.

4 . The combination of claim 3 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone chamber has a lower wall and the dirt outlet comprises an opening defined between a sidewall of the cyclone chamber and the lower wall of the cyclone chamber.

5 . The combination of claim 4 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the dirt collection chamber has a lower wall and the lower wall of the cyclone chamber and the lower wall of the dirt collection chamber are concurrently openable.

6 . The combination of claim 3 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone chamber has a sidewall extending between upper and lower ends of the cyclone chamber and the dirt outlet comprises at least one opening in the sidewall.

7 . The combination of claim 6 wherein the dirt outlet comprises a plurality of openings in the sidewall.

The combination of claim 6 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone chamber air outlet comprises vortex finder extending downwardly into the cyclone chamber from an upper end of the cyclone chamber, the cyclone chamber air inlet is provided at a lower end of the cyclone chamber, the vortex finder has a lower distal end and the dirt outlet is located at an elevation above the distal end.

9 . The combination of claim 3 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the dirt outlet is located at a lower end of the cyclone chamber.

10 . The combination of claim 9 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone chamber has a lower openable end wall, and the dirt collection chamber also has a lower openable end wall.

11 . The combination of claim 9 wherein, when the docking station is placed on a horizontal surface and is in operation, the cyclone chamber air inlet and the cyclone chamber air outlet are located at an upper end of the cyclone chamber.

12 . The combination of claim 1 wherein the first cyclonic stage is a single cyclone.

13 . The combination of claim 1 further comprising a second cyclonic stage that is provided downstream from the first cyclonic stage.

14 . The combination of claim 13 wherein the second cyclonic stage comprises a plurality of cyclones that are fluidically connected in parallel.

15 . The combination of claim 13 wherein the first cyclonic stage and the second cyclonic stage are concurrently emptyable.

16 . The combination of claim 1 wherein a housing body houses the cyclonic stage, the housing body has a carry handle and an openable bottom.
