Abstract

Claims (38)

1 . An assembly comprising:

an inserter, comprising:

a first carrier assembly disposed in an interior of the inserter, the first carrier assembly comprising a sharp configured to insert a portion of a glucose sensor into a subject's body;

a retraction spring disposed in the interior of the inserter, the retraction spring comprising a proximal end disposed in an interior of the first carrier assembly;

a second carrier assembly comprising one or more proximally-extending carrier arms; and

wherein the first carrier assembly further comprises one or more detents configured to detachably engage with the one or more proximally extending carrier arms;

wherein the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly are configured to advance in a distal direction toward the subject's skin from a proximal position entirely in the interior of the inserter to a distal position,

wherein engagement of the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms and the one or more detents is configured to prevent relative movement of the first carrier assembly and the second carrier assembly in the proximal position,

wherein, after the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly advance from the proximal position, each proximally-extending carrier arm of the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms is configured to disengage from a corresponding detent of the one or more detents,

wherein advancement of the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly causes insertion of the portion of the glucose sensor into the subject's body,

wherein the retraction spring is configured to expand after the insertion of the portion of the glucose sensor into the subject's body,

wherein the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms extend through an interior of the retraction spring,

wherein the each proximally-extending carrier arm of the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms and the corresponding detent of the one or more detents form a latch,

wherein the each proximally-extending carrier arm of the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms is configured to disengage from the corresponding detent of the one or more detents in response to a force applied in a proximal direction to the first carrier assembly.

2 . The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor control device comprising the glucose sensor coupled with sensor electronics.

3 . The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the sensor control device is configured to be positioned on the subject's skin when the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly are in the distal position.

4 . The assembly of claim 3 , wherein the each proximally-extending carrier arm of the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms comprises a corresponding laterally-extending retention feature.

5 . The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the corresponding laterally-extending retention feature is disposed on a proximal end of the each proximally-extending carrier arm.

6 . The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the each proximally-extending carrier arm of the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms is configured to prevent expansion of the retraction spring via the corresponding laterally-extending retention feature.

7 . The assembly of claim 3 , wherein at least a part of the glucose sensor is disposed in the sharp when the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly are in the proximal position.

8 . The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the sensor control device further comprises an adhesive portion configured to secure the sensor control device to the subject's skin.

9 . The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the sensor electronics comprises a processor, memory, a power source, and communication circuitry configured to wirelessly communicate data indicative of a glucose level.

10 . The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the sensor control device further comprises a sensor hub,

wherein the portion of the glucose sensor is a part of a distal sensor portion,

wherein the glucose sensor comprises the distal sensor portion and a proximal sensor portion,

wherein the part of the distal sensor portion is configured to sense a glucose level of the

subject,

wherein the proximal sensor portion is engaged with the sensor hub, and

wherein the distal sensor portion is substantially orthogonal to the proximal sensor portion.

11 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the each proximally-extending carrier arm of the one or more proximally-extending carrier arms is biased against the corresponding detent of the one or more detents.

12 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the retraction spring comprises a compression spring.

13 . The assembly of claim 12 , wherein the compression spring is in a preloaded, compressed state while the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly are advanced from the proximal position to the distal position.

14 . The assembly of claim 12 , wherein the compression spring is biased to retract the first carrier assembly in a proximal direction away from the subject's skin.

15 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly are further configured to advance along a linear path.

16 . The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a cap removably attached to the inserter by a plurality of threads, and wherein the cap comprises an interior space comprising a sterile environment.

17 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first carrier assembly is releasably coupled with the second carrier assembly when the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly are in the proximal position.

18 . The assembly of claim 17 , wherein the first carrier assembly is configured to decouple from the second carrier assembly after the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly reach the distal position.

19 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the retraction spring is configured to apply a second force that retracts the first carrier assembly after the first carrier assembly, the retraction spring, and the second carrier assembly reach the distal position.
