Abstract

An apparatus with a solid state drive (SSD) having firmware to farm proof of space plots. The SSD has a communication interface configured to receive at least read commands and write commands from an external host system. The SSD has memory cells formed on at least one integrated circuit die, and a processing device configured to control executions of the read commands to retrieve data from the memory cells and executions the write commands to store data into the memory cells. The firmware is executable in the SSD to establish a network connection to a cryptocurrency network, receive a proof of space challenge, and generate a response to the challenge using a plot stored in the memory cells.

Claims (54)

1 . A method, comprising:

storing, in a memory sub-system, a proof of space plot having a plurality of lookup tables;

establishing, from the memory sub-system, a wired or wireless computer network connection;

receiving, in the memory sub-system via a network connection, a proof of space challenge;

reading, by the memory sub-system, the plurality of lookup tables, including:

reading a first entry of a first lookup table, among the plurality of lookup tables, according to the proof of space challenge; and

reading a second entry of a second lookup table, among the plurality of lookup tables, according to the first entry;

generating, by the memory sub-system, a response to the proof of space challenge based on the reading of the plurality of lookup tables; and

transmitting, from the memory sub-system via the network connection, the response.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the response is generated during a time period in which a host system connected to a host interface of the memory sub-system is in a low power mode, a sleep mode, or a hibernation mode.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the response is generated without assistance from a host system connected to a host interface of the memory sub-system.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the proof of space challenge is received without assistance from the host system.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

controlling, by the memory sub-system, a network interface via operating the memory sub-system as a host of the network interface.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

communicating, via the network connection, with a computing device separate from a host system of the memory sub-system, to provide a portion of a storage capacity of the memory sub-system as a remote storage device of the computing device.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

limiting access by the computing device to the portion of the storage capacity of the memory sub-system to plot farming.

8 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

identifying, by the memory sub-system, free storage resources available in the memory sub-system; and

allocating, from the free storage resources, the portion of the storage capacity of the memory sub-system to store one or more proof of space plots.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving, from the host system and in the memory sub-system, a command independent of proof of space activities; and

reducing, by the memory sub-system, the portion of the storage capacity of the memory sub-system for execution of the command.

10 . An apparatus, comprising:

a solid state drive, having:

a communication interface operable to receive commands from a host system;

memory cells formed on at least one integrated circuit die; and

a processing device configured to control executions of the commands;

wherein the solid state drive has firmware configured to:

store, in the memory cells, a proof of space plot having a plurality of lookup tables;

establish a wired or wireless computer network connection to access a cryptocurrency network;

receive, via network connection from network, a proof of space challenge;

read the plurality of lookup tables;

in response to the proof of space challenge:

read a first lookup table, among the plurality of lookup tables, according to the proof of space challenge to retrieve a first entry; and

read a second lookup table, among the plurality of lookup tables, according to the first entry to retrieve a second entry, wherein the response is based at least in part on the second entry; and

generate a response to the proof of space challenge based on the reading of the plurality of lookup tables; and

transmit, via the network connection to the cryptocurrency network, the response.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the communication interface is operable to control a network interface connected to a peripheral bus; the communication interface is connected to the host system via the peripheral bus; the network connection is established via the network interface and the peripheral bus; and the response is generated during a time period in which the host system is in a low power mode, a sleep mode, or a hibernation mode.

12 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the solid state drive further includes a communication device operable to establish the network connection without using the communication interface; and the response is generated without assistance from the host system connected to the communication interface.

13 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the proof of space challenge is received in the solid state drive without going through the host system.

14 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the network connection is via the host system connected to the communication interface; and the response is generated without a communication over the communication interface between receiving in the solid state drive the proof of space challenge and transmitting from the solid state drive the response.

15 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed in a memory sub-system, causes the memory sub-system to perform a method, comprising:

storing, in the memory sub-system, a proof of space plot having a plurality of lookup tables;

establishing, from the memory sub-system, a wired or wireless computer network connection;

receiving, in the memory sub-system via the network connection, a proof of space challenge;

reading, by the memory sub-system, the plurality of lookup tables, comprising:

reading a first entry of a first lookup table, among the plurality of lookup tables, according to the proof of space challenge; and

reading a second entry of a second lookup table, among the plurality of lookup tables, according to the first entry; and

generating, by the memory sub-system, a response to the proof of space challenge based on the reading of the plurality of lookup tables; and

transmitting, from the memory sub-system via the network connection, the response.

16 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the response is generated during a time period in which a host system connected to a host interface of the memory sub-system is in a low power mode, a sleep mode, or a hibernation mode.

17 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the response is generated without assistance from a host system connected to a host interface of the memory sub-system; and where in the proof of space challenge is received without assistance from the host system.
