Abstract

Exemplary embodiments relate to secure documents that are capable of being in an activated or deactivated state. When in the activated state, the document may be redeemable; when in the deactivated state, the document may not be redeemable. The document may be issued in the deactivated state and may require activation before being used. In order to activate the document, a user may log into an account associated with the document and scan a code printed on or embedded in the document. Using their account, the user may issue an activation command. This activation process ensures that, at the time the document is transferred, it is either in the presence of the user or the user is aware of the location of the document, and that the user wishes to authorize the transfer. Thus, even if the document is stolen or misplaced, it cannot be used without the requisite authorization.

Claims (49)

1 . A method comprising:

presenting, by a processor via an application, an activation element on a display for a document associated with a profile of a user stored on a server;

receiving, by the processor, a first user input turning the document on by the user physically moving the activation element in a first direction from a deactivated configuration to an activated configuration;

prompting, by the processor via the application, the user for a document code associated with the document;

receiving, by the processor, a user confirmation code entered into the application by the user in response to the application prompting the user for the document code associated with the document;

comparing, by the processor, the document code to the user confirmation code in response to receiving the user confirmation code entered into the application by the user; and

automatically sending, by the processor, an instruction to the server in response to comparing the document code to the user confirmation code, configuring the server to:

approve a transfer of resources from the user to a third party when the activation element is in the activated configuration and the user confirmation code matches the document code, or

deny the transfer of the resources to the third party when the activation element is in the deactivated configuration or the user confirmation code fails to match the document code; and

receiving, by the processor, a second user input turning the document off by the user physically moving the activation element in a second direction from the activated configuration to the deactivated configuration, wherein the second direction is different than the first direction.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by sliding the activation element between the first direction and the second direction.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by toggling the activation element between a first state and a second state.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by selecting or deselecting the activation element.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by receiving a haptic touch signal at a first location on the display, maintaining haptic contact while the haptic touch signal moves from the first location to a second location on the display, and receiving a haptic release signal at the second location.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the user confirmation code by scanning the document.

7 . A method comprising:

presenting, by a processor via a secured website logged into an account, an activation element on a display for a document associated with a profile of a user stored on a server;

receiving, by the processor, a first user input to turning the document on by the user physically moving the activation element in a first direction from a deactivated configuration to an activated configuration;

prompting, by the processor via the secured website, the user for a document code associated with the document;

receiving, by the processor, a user confirmation code entered into the secured website in response to the secured website prompting the user for the document code;

comparing, by the processor, the document code to the user confirmation code in response to receiving the user confirmation code entered into the secured website by the user; and

automatically sending, by the processor, an instruction to the server, in response to comparing the document code to the user confirmation code, configuring the server to:

approve a transfer of resources from the user to a third party when the activation element is in the activated configuration and the user confirmation code matches the document code, or

deny the transfer of the resources to the third party when the activation element is in the deactivated configuration or the user confirmation code fails to match the document code; and

receiving, by the processor, a second user input turning the document off by the user physically moving the activation element in a second direction from the activated configuration to the deactivated configuration, wherein the second direction is different than the first direction.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by sliding the activation element between the first direction and the second direction.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by toggling the activation element between a first state and a second state.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by selecting or deselecting the activation element.

11 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by receiving a haptic touch signal at a first location on the display, maintaining haptic contact while the haptic touch signal moves from the first location to a second location on the display, and receiving a haptic release signal at the second location.

12 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

receiving the user confirmation code by scanning the document.

13 . A method comprising:

receiving, by a server comprising a processor, a first request to activate a document providing for a transfer of resources from a user to a third party, the first request received responsive to the user physically moving an activation element displayed on a display in a first direction from a deactivated configuration to an activated configuration to request activation of the document;

activating, by the server, the document responsive to the first request to activate the document;

receiving, by the server, a user confirmation code;

responsive to receiving the user confirmation code, comparing, by the server, the user confirmation code with a document code associated with the document;

responsive to comparing the user confirmation code with the document code:

approving the transfer of the resources from the user to the third party when the document is in the activated configuration and the user confirmation code matches the document code, or

denying the transfer of the resources to the third party when the document is in the deactivated configuration or the user confirmation code fails to match the document code; and

receiving, by the server, a second request to deactivate the document, the second request received responsive to the user physically moving the activation element in a second direction from the activated configuration to the deactivated configuration to request deactivation of the document, wherein the second direction is different than the first direction.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by sliding the activation element between the first direction and the second direction.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by toggling the activation element between a first state and a second state.

16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by selecting or deselecting the activation element.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the activation element is moved between the activated configuration and the deactivated configuration by receiving a haptic touch signal at a first location on the display, maintaining haptic contact while the haptic touch signal moves from the first location to a second location on the display, and receiving a haptic release signal at the second location.

18 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

receiving the user confirmation code by scanning the document.

19 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the first request or the second request is received from a client device executing an application logged into an account associated with a profile of the user stored on the server.

20 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the first request or the second request is received from a secured website logged into an account associated with a profile of the user stored on the server.
