Abstract

A bone material removal device including a cannula, a bone drilling forward tip and a bore widening element including a bone carving portion that slides axially relative to the cannula and extends in a circumferential direction and wherein the axial movement of the bore widening element relative to the cannula brings a carving portions to travel and extend radially in a circumferential direction beyond a surface of the cannula and carve bone from a wall of a bore.

Claims (41)

1 . A bone material removal device, comprising:

a cannula having a distal end; and

an elastic member including a forward tip and a bore widening element, said bore widening element including a radially extending eccentric protrusion having a carving portion including a carving edge configured to contact a bone;

wherein said elastic member is configured to be in a first position wherein said bore widening element is elastically radially compressed inside said cannula, and wherein said bore widening element being operative to axially move relative to said cannula; and

wherein said bore widening element is configured to be radially extended by said axial movement, from said first position wherein said carving portion is retracted to within a diameter of said cannula to a second position wherein said carving portion is radially extended in a circumferential direction beyond said diameter of said cannula;

wherein the entire said carving edge is configured to be moved axially past said distal end of said cannula to said second position.

2 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein the elastic member is moveably housed in the cannula.

3 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein the forward tip is a bore drilling tip.

4 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein the cannula includes an inwardly tapered portion located adjacent to said distal end of the cannula.

A device according to claim 1 , wherein said cannula has a distal end having an inner circumference and wherein a diameter of said cannula distal end inner circumference is substantially equal to an outer diameter of a thickest portion of said elastic member and supports axial and rotational movement and no radial movement of the elastic member.

A device according to claim 3 , wherein in operation, a point of contact between the bore drilling tip and a bone surrounding the bore drilling tip defines a first shaft capture point, and a point of contact between the bore widening element and an inner circumference of the cannula defines a second shaft capture point, wherein axial movement of the elastic member with respect to the cannula shortens a distance between the first shaft capture point and the second shaft capture point, increasing a rigidity of the bone widening element and bringing the carving portion to be translated radially.

A device according to claim 3 , wherein in operation, a point of contact between the bore drilling tip and a bone surrounding the bore drilling tip defines a first shaft capture point, and a point of contact between the bore widening element and an inner circumference of the cannula defines a second shaft capture point, wherein contact of the elastic member with a tip of the cannula creates a third shaft capture point being at or below a threshold length from the first shaft capture point, wherein the distal end of the bore widening element is configured to lose its resilience at the third shaft capture point and to become rigid, causing the carving portion to be translated radially.

8 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said carving portion is located at a non-zero distance from said tip.

9 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein resilience of the elastic member supports accommodation of the bore widening element within a bore drilled by the forward tip, said elastic member configured to conform to a diameter of the bore.

A device according to claim 1 wherein said device has a longitudinal axis and wherein, when said elastic member distal end is supported by a bore drilled by said forward tip, at least a peak of the carving portion does not protrude radially and remains generally aligned with the device longitudinal axis.

11 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said carving portion comprises at least one carving edge.

12 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said carving portion comprises at least first and second carving edges.

13 . A device according to claim 12 , wherein axial movement of said device is convertible to radial translation and extension of said at least first and second carving edges by means of transition of said device from a resting state to a stressed state and vice versa.

14 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said device has a longitudinal axis, a first generally cylindrical portion proximal to said bore widening element, and a second generally cylindrical portion distal to said bore widening element; and

wherein said second cylindrical portion is radially deflectable such that said first cylindrical portion is not aligned with said longitudinal axis.

15 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said protrusion has a generally convex outer surface including said carving portion.

16 . A device according to claim 15 , wherein said protrusion has a generally concave inner surface.

17 . A device according to claim 15 , wherein said protrusion has a generally flat inner surface.

18 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said device has a longitudinal axis, a first generally cylindrical portion proximal to said bore widening element, and a second generally cylindrical portion distal to said bore widening element; and

wherein said second cylindrical portion is radially deflectable such that said second cylindrical portion is not aligned with said longitudinal axis.

19 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said elastic member includes a distal end comprising first and second substantially straight portions, said bore widening element joined to said first and second substantially straight portions.

20 . A device according to claim 19 , wherein in the cannula the elastic member is in a stressed state in which said first and second substantially straight portions are not aligned with a longitudinal axis of the device.

21 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said cannula distal end is an open distal end, and wherein said bore widening element is axially extended out of said cannula open distal end.

22 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said cannula has a longitudinal axis;

wherein said elastic member is an elongate deformable elastic member;

wherein in said first position said elastic member is elastically radially compressed inside said cannula and is operative to axially move relative to said cannula;

wherein said carving portion is configured to be radially extended by said axial movement; and

wherein, in said second position, said elastic member is deformed such that at least a portion of said elastic member proximal to said carving portion is not aligned with said cannula longitudinal axis.

23 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said cannula has a distal end; and

wherein, in said second position, a most forward portion of said elastic member extends axially and distally past said cannula distal end.

24 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein said device has a second generally cylindrical portion distal to said bore widening element.

25 . A method for widening a bore in a bone, said method including:

axially moving an elastic member housed within a cannula relative to the cannula, wherein said elastic member includes a forward tip and a bore widening element, said bore widening element including a radially extending eccentric protrusion having a carving portion;

wherein in a first position of said elastic member, said bore widening element is elastically radially compressed inside said cannula, and said carving portion is retracted to within a diameter of said cannula; and

wherein said axial movement of the elastic member radially extends said bore widening element from said first position to a second position wherein said carving portion is radially extended in a circumferential direction beyond said diameter of said cannula;

wherein the entire said carving edge is configured to be moved axially past said distal end of said cannula to said second position.
